Weekend Recap

This weekend was all about some “me” time! Friday, the girls invited Great-Grandpa over for dinner and an evening stroll. As soon as he walked through the door, Amelia started smiling and laughing. He tapped her wrist (he used to be a baby/kid photographer and that’s one of the tricks he would use to get the babies to smile) and she would erupt into a fit of giggles. She rarely does that for me!

Saturday, I went to Children’s Orchard because they were having a sale..almost everything 0-12 months was only $1. I picked up way more skirts and dresses than I will ever need, but that seems to be the case with most of our baby crap, so oh well. I also found some toys that I had just barely put into my shopping cart on Amazon that I bought at the sale instead. The total for some toys, fifteen outfits, and some adorable baby sunglasses was $30. Besides the sunglasses, my favorite purchase had to be the bright pink Tommy Hilfiger collared polo shirt with a matching white tennis skirt. I just wish they had TWO of them so the girls could match!

Saturday night, the girls had a Daddy-daughter date at home while I met up with some friends at the Camino Real Playhouse in San Juan Capistrano to watch a friend play Mistress Page in “The Merry Wives of Windsor.” I asked the girls if they wanted to come with me, but they said they preferred “Othello,” “King Lear,” and the more serious side of Shakespeare, so alone I went. I was a little bit worried when I left as both girls were screaming their heads off, but, amazingly, Jake was able to do the bed time routine and get them sound asleep in under fifteen minutes. That’s a huge deposit in the favor bank…thanks, babe!

The play was outdoors at the park so we picnicked pigged-out on the grass, amused by the fact that we were definitely the youngest ones there by about 30 years.

I couldn’t resist calling home to make sure the girls were all right.

It was refreshing to get out of the house and partake in conversation that did not include any references to nursery rhymes, bowel movements, or exclamations of “LOOK! SO CUTE!” every time the girls moved a muscle. I must admit, after four months of being saturated in everything baby, I had to REALLY concentrate to follow along with the fast-paced, witty banter of the play! After the twins, I’m pretty sure my brain will never be the same again.

On Sunday, we did some re-takes of the girls’ four-month photos and, despite the girls’ best efforts, managed to capture some cute ones, which I’ll post later.

In preparation for a barbecue with friends later that afternoon, the girls made some Watermelon Bars.

First, the girls had to create the crust with some butter and graham cracker crumbs.

Next, it was time to juice a watermelon and mix it with some gelatin.

When I’m angry, I turn the color of whatever object is in front of me at the moment!

This recipe is soooooo pedestrian. I could make it in my sleep.

Then, they added some freshly-squeezed lemon juice, poured the watermelon mixture over the crust and let it set in the freezer.

The girls had a lot of fun cooking (they’ve been watching a lot of Food Network lately and are always begging me to let them try out some new recipes). Unfortunately, the watermelon bars turned out to be one of those Pinterest ideas that looks delicious, but turns out a lot different than the photos….and by “a lot different,” I mean the bars came out looking like spam. Jake liked them, but, sadly, they just didn’t live up to my expectations.

At the barbecue, Maliyah let Samantha and Amelia try out all her toys. Samantha had the best time slobbering all over Maliyah’s exersaucer so I think that’s the next item we’ll be buying soon, even though Amelia expressed her extreme dislike for the toy by screaming when we put her in it.

Enjoying a delicious barbecue and hanging out with the girls was the perfect way to end our weekend, although Amelia decided she wanted to go home half-way through dinner and proceeded to scream until we finally left. Samantha was giving a Maliyah a look across that table the whole time that said, “SEE WHAT I HAVE TO PUT UP WITH?!”

Poor Amelia. I think she was just angry that after all that hard work, she didn’t even get to try her watermelon bars!

Lots of love,

  1. "When I'm angry, I turn the color of whatever object is in front of me at the moment!" Best picture and caption pair ever.

Do the girls need onesies, "Please don't let my next meal be from pinterest."
