Park City with the Gerins Summer 2017

While the Gerins were in town, we spent a day taking in the fresh mountain air and gorgeous views in Park City. At such a high altitude, a relatively mild summer day felt scorching and we were all a little sunburned, altitude-stricken and exhausted at the end of our adventures, but Samantha and Amelia enjoyed showing Noah the ropes. Hailey and Meredith had a baby/toddler playdate at home with Grammy and Grandpa, so it was just the older sibs this time!

Noah and Amelia wasted no time bringing on the silliness.

First stop: riding the chair lift up to the Alpine Slide. Whenever we ride a chair lift, the twins always ask a million questions about what happens if they fall out. “AND THEN WE WILL DIE,” they pronounce, solemnly.

Trying not to die on the chair lift.

Noah provided comic relief whenever the girls got cranky.

Last October on the Alpine Slide:

Here we go! It’s always a fight over who gets to sit with Daddy. The girls came up with a reluctant compromise that whoever sat with Daddy on the Slide, HAD to sit with me on the Coaster. I’m always the second choice, and the girls don’t even pretend to hide that fact!

Oh my… mining for gems turned out to be the girls’ favorite part of the whole day (maybe vacation?) They are totally obsessed with the bag of polished rocks they collected and still keep them by their bedsides.

Proud owner of polished rocks!

For unexplained reasons, the twins were also excited about this slow-moving waterless tube hill.

Time to bounce! Samantha showed off her flips, while Amelia took a more conservative straight up and down approach.

Amelia on the trampoline last year:

What next?

Hugs!

The ropes course looked pretty challenging, but everyone hung in there and did well.

Samantha on the ropes last year:

Noah was so cute up there!

Zipline time.

Weeeee!

Even Noah tried it!

Everyone was tired by the afternoon and ready to go, but being gluttons for punishment, Jake and I stayed to take the girls on the promised Alpine Coaster while everyone else headed home. I should probably read my old blog posts once in a while before planned excursions because the last time we were at Park City, I wrote a note to my future self, imploring myself to remember to quit while I was ahead. History repeated itself as 45 minutes, three bathroom breaks, two shaved ices and two very sunburned and tired twins later, we made it back down the mountain. We don’t even have pictures to show for all our heroic effort, so here’s the coaster from last year. It’s way faster than the slide and the girls had a blast, but I don’t know that I’d go through waiting in that torturous line with them again, thrilling coaster or not.

See you next time, Park City.

Trek to Utah Summer 2017

At the end of July through first week of August, we packed up and spent a few weeks of family and adventure-packed time in Utah! I had debated whether to send Jake and twins in the car while I flew with Meredith, like we did last year, but ultimately decided we were better off with Meredith strapped in a car seat, screaming, than on a plane, in my lap, screaming. She’s insanely strong and I probably would have ended up buying her her own seat, just to keep her restrained on a plane, so we decided to roll the dice and drive!

We started our travel off late in the day, thanks to the girls’ dance class in the morning and an Amazon package carrying some last-minute Keens for our trip that was late. As soon as we spotted the UPS truck with the coveted Amazon package on board, we jumped for joy and were finally able to take off in the afternoon. I always underestimate how cranky the kids get with late-in-the-day travel, and this was no exception. I always assume evening road trips will be a breeze since they will most definitely drift off in the car, right? Maybe everyone else’s kids, but not ours!

By Vegas, it was well past bedtime, and yet everyone was wide-eyed, whiny and sick of the car/each other. Thanks to the long stretches of desert and crossing time zones, it was still light out at 9 p.m., and without any blackout shades in sight, no one could fall asleep, despite the steady hum of the car. At one point, late that night, everyone was screaming, I had my headphones on ignoring everyone, and Jake was gripping the wheel, diet coke in hand, when suddenly, they all went silent. Having finally conked out, the kids were peaceful for an hour before we had to unload everyone at Jake’s brother’s vacation home in St. George to rest for the night. At least we had made our first leg of the trek unscathed (physically, at least… I still have mental scars!)

The twins were bewildered to wake up in unfamiliar bunk beds, and Meredith wasted no time trying to make a mess in every room in the morning, so we left as quickly as possible, not wanting to risk damaging anything in the nice vacation house! The four-hour drive to Lindon that morning was much better than the six hour torture-session the previous day, and the girls arrived at Grammy’s in good spirits.

Ready to go, with four bikes and a baby bike seat attached.

Everyone was too excited to see cousins to nap, so we all ran them ragged in the hot sun and put everyone to bed early. Allison, Zack, Noah and Hailey had flown to Utah a few days prior to us arriving and we were so excited to hang out and show them the sights for a few days!

Look, another baby!

Hailey was confused!

During the Gerins’ stay, we headed out in the morning for activities, came back for naps (or non-naps in Samantha and Amelia’s cases), and then typically spent the afternoons playing in the backyard. It was about as relaxing a vacation as is possible with our crew.

Cousin swinging time.

Meredith has started refusing to sit in her high chair for more than a few minutes before demanding a big girl chair.

We slept over at Tyler and Elizabeth’s house in Provo while the Gerins were at my parents, and every morning, the girls got a few jumps in on the trampoline before taking off. They really miss our old trampoline!

A new best doggie friend– Roger.

I love Aunt Sarah.

Meredith enjoyed poking and prodding Hailey to no end, in addition to constantly trying to steal her food.

Our stay coincided with Pioneer Day, so the girls participated in the obligatory sparklers, parachutes and backyard fireworks display. The twins were exhausted, and being mean parents, we didn’t let them stay up until it actually got dark to do fireworks, so the fireworks looked pretty sad in the daylight. Maybe next year!

I spent many a summer day making rivers and lakes with the hose in this sandpit. I was happy it had the same appeal to the kids!

Being efficient with cousin bath time.

Belated birthday celebration for Noah. Clearly, he was disappointed to have to eat cake AGAIN.

Sadly, the girls weren’t very interested in the slip ‘n’ slide this year.

So much swinging. All. The. Time.

One rainy morning, we visited the Museum of Natural Curiosity and the kids had a blast on the zipline and water area inside.

More swinging…

Meredith’s favorite thing to do is bike…or rather ride on the back of my bike.

The biking trail is right out Grammy and Grandpa’s back gate, which made family bike rides a very convenient activity.

Noah was lightning fast on his scooter and held his own with the girls on their bikes.

Poor Bandit kept watch in the backyard while we were out.

Every night after a day packed with cousin fun, the girls conked out at 7 p.m., just like this.

Swimming and Summer Camps

Thankfully, during our final unpacking phase in July, the girls had a few summer camps to keep them occupied as well as going to preschool two mornings a week when we didn’t have special activities going on. I credit our pool, swimming lessons and summer camps for helping me not turn into this (Samantha’s lovely portrait of me) 100% of the time:

“Mad Mommy.” Not sure what the other object is supposed to be. A jail? Thanks, Samantha.

Eight weeks of swim lessons with Miss Erica and Miss Conni went relatively smoothly for the first year ever! No meltdowns, the girls cooperated, and they really improved their swimming ability this year.

Their reward on the last day of swim lessons is always to choose some of the fun animal floaties on which to goof around:

This was me last year, coaxing the girls into the pool. Eventually, Jake had to throw them in, screaming (they loved the pool when we took them to play, but went through a phase of throwing tantrums for a few weeks during swim lessons last year). As a side note, I really miss that grey cardigan! It was my favorite and I think I left it at a park or something last year.

Safety day last year (kids kept all their clothes and shoes on to simulate how it would feel in the event they accidentally fell into the pool):

The twins raced each other during their lessons this year.

This was taken during this year’s safety day, after about two weeks of lessons. By the end of eight weeks, their back float and front stroke improved drastically.

Practicing our “swim skills” at home. It’s always challenging getting them to actually swim whenever Jake is in the pool because all they want to do is play.

On the mornings the girls were in preschool, I began trying to push Meredith’s nap back so that she only napped once a day. At 18 months, we’re still not quite there yet, and her schedule has been a real struggle! Most days, she really still needs that morning nap, but was getting to the point where she was having a hard time going down in the afternoon, a nap she absolutely needs if we don’t want to deal with a total monster until bedtime! In an effort to keep her occupied during her old morning nap time, I would distract her by going to the splash pad or park.

Friday pizza night! We don’t always make it from scratch, but when we do, the girls go crazy with the toppings.

The girls attended a one-week Moana-themed morning summer camp at a preschool one of their friends goes to. They made leis, headbands, bracelets, heart of Tafiti necklaces, and some cute ocean-themed snacks and crafts. I thought that given their love of Moana, crafts and the new activities at the school, that they were going to love it, and while they did have fun, I was surprised when they told me they missed their regular preschool. I don’t even know if they understand the meaning of this word, but they actually said they were bored! I didn’t realize how attached they were to their regular teachers and class. At least this experience confirmed to me that they really love their Montessori school, even with all the fun activities and toys this one had.

Showing off their Hearts of Tafiti.

At the invitation of a friend, the girls also attended Vacation Bible School for the first time at the same church preschool. They absolutely loved it and begged to go “see the superheroes” (it was a superheroes/find your strength in God theme). They made capes, shields, played games, sang songs, read Bible stories, and thought the Pie Face game, in which one of the superheroes was slammed in the face with a pie during a skit, was hilarious. It was well organized and we loved the theme (although the music CD they gave us to listen to in the car ad nauseam got a little old!) Meredith was too young to attend, which was truly tragic for her, and I had to drag her out of the drop-off area in the chapel every morning that week, screaming her little head off.

Another highlight of July was going to Addison and Camdyn’s annual bake sale. Mom of the year award for Amy for helping her girls bake and put it all together! I don’t have that much patience, but their whole set up was so darling, that it’s tempting! The twins have been begging to put together a lemonade stand ever since.

Meredith approved of the marshmallow pop.

At the girls’ request, after the bake sale, we stopped by our old house and played at our old little playground.

Just like yesterday… (and it pretty much was, since we had only been in our new house a month).

Lastly, with the extra time off this summer, the girls have been delving into taking on more “family contributions” (i.e. chores). Meredith “helps” by picking up things and throwing them away (not always stuff we want thrown away, e.g. silverware, but it’s a step in the right direction).

The twins have their own unpaid family contributions (unloading the dishwasher, making their beds, cleaning their rooms, feeding Bandit), and I have a list of others they can choose from and earn money. Amelia’s favorite is cleaning windows and mirrors, while Samantha usually chooses to fold laundry or clean baseboards. On this particular day, Meredith had been a pain and I joked that Santa wasn’t going to bring her any toys this Christmas. After completing their work-for-hire jobs and receiving compensation in the amount of four quarters each, the twins announced that they were going to pool their earnings together and buy Meredith some toys. They aren’t always that generous and sweet, but when they are cute, they’re cute!

American Cutie Pies 2017

4th of July 2013:

2014: Sorry, Meredith. With you being the third child, we no longer have the time/energy to spend an entire evening decorating a festive wagon for you.

2015:

2016 in Utah:

2017: Note the lack of coordinated outfits/done hair compared to past years (everyone wore dresses they already had that just happened to be blue or red). Yeah, we’re tired. Special holiday outfits and holiday photo shoots are a thing of the distant past at this point. But it might be better this way!

We crashed our our friend, Sheela’s, block party the day before the 4th and the twins must have gone up and down that waterslide a hundred times.

Getting soaked with a game of water balloon hot potato.

Grammy and Grandpa drove from Utah to see our new house for the first time and spend the week of the 4th with us.

The girls loved showing Grammy and Grandpa their favorite neighborhood attractions.

Picnic time while Jake and I were getting some house projects done.

Pass the La Croix, please.

The twins have been obsessed with climbing trees lately.

The girls were excited to swim at Grace’s pool and try out her water slide, although Meredith was such a pain that afternoon and did NOT want to be in the water with us.

Special delivery!

Bandit shows off his swimming skills.

BBQ time.

Mmmm…chicken…

The morning of the 4th, I stayed home and unpacked more boxes while everyone went to the local pancake breakfast and waited for our tiny, but cute, local parade.

Meredith looked liked she grew into a two-year-old overnight! She’s so much bigger at 17 months that the twins were at the same age:

Amelia leads everyone in a rendition of a song they made up in honor of the 4th: “Three cheers for the red, white and blue!” (sung over and over again ad nauseam).

Daddy’s girls.

When will this dumb parade start?

Waiting for the parade in 2014 and 2015:

Please throw candy!

The highlight of the parade:

The twins concluded that, once again, the parade was worth it due to all the candy being thrown to them.

Amelia shows off her spoils in the parade a few years ago:

After the parade, everyone headed back  for our own neighborhood block party. We will always cherish the awesome block parties hosted by the Hossfelds in our old neighborhood, but we were also ready to make new 4th of July memories in our new one. Even though we had already met some of the neighbors, this was our first official meet and greet with everyone, and I didn’t see the twins for about three hours, thanks to the waterslide!

Amelia at one of our old neighborhood 4th of July parties:

We’ve finally found the key to being able to hold adult conversations more than five minutes while the kids are completely occupied:

Meredith on the 4th last year:

Juicy watermelon!

Nap time, anyone?

In the evening, we walked down to the carnival, where the twins were in carnival game heaven, and Jake

I promptly took advantage of Meredith being occupied with the shaved ice to walk her home and we were both fast asleep by 8 p.m.! Meanwhile, Jake, Grandpa and the twins hiked up the hill behind our house and stayed up to watch our local fireworks, as well as those from the beach and surrounding cities. I was happy to offload the firework responsibility to someone else and the girls were excited to finally be able to stay up late enough to see them (barely… the following day was rough).

Lots of love,
