Utes vs UCLA Game Epic Fail

We knew we were probably crazy to take all three girls to a Utes game, but we got a little more than we bargained for at the Utes vs. UCLA game at the Rose Bowl this year. New matching Ute gear had been purchased, Ute bows had been dug out from the depths of the girls’ hair accessory collection and everyone had been pumped for weeks. The girls even tried out their Ute gear when it was Wear Your Favorite Team’s Jersey to School Day at their preschool the day prior.

Sometimes, especially when there is a fair amount of eager anticipation and preparation in play, things are just destined for an epic fail, and that’s exactly what we’ll call this day.

Ute Game at USC 2015… technically Meredith’s first Ute game!

img_2953

For whatever reason, all three girls were whiny, crazy and obnoxious on the trip up, which, combined with traffic, did not a pleasant drive make. We’ve had better 10 hour road trips to Utah than we had on that 1.5 hour insanity-inducing drive. Looking back, this was obviously foreshadowing that this day was just not going to go our way.

We were meeting our friend, Lucero, in Pasadena and had planned to have a picnic at the park before the game, but those plans were scrapped as traffic built up. We reached Pasadena with just enough time to park at the golf course at the Rose Bowl and picnic there, which actually worked out great. img_0857

Sebastian, Kennedy, Amelia and Samantha ran around the green to their hearts’ content and had a blast playing tag. That was definitely the highlight of the game. img_0848

Go Utes!

Climbing trees was another highlight for the kids.

img_5508 img_5512

It was 85 degrees that relentlessly hot late October day, which at the Rose Bowl, meant it really felt like 95 degrees because the stadium is literally in a bowl at the bottom of a valley. It was absolutely scorching and just getting from our picnic to the stadium felt like trekking through the Sahara. I had to pump in the car, with the AC on full blast, while everyone else made their way to the game, and from their reports, the kids were having a good time… for about the first thirty minutes.

As soon as I finally got there, I found poor Lucero holding a screaming Meredith, while trying to wrangle her own kids. Jake had taken the twins to the bathroom and by the beginning of the second quarter, everyone (especially poor Meredith) was hot, cranky and sick of being there already. There was no escape from the direct sun, and Meredith was inconsolable, even when I put her in the Ergo.

To make matters worse, we were in a section surrounded by obnoxious UCLA fans, who made poor little Kennedy so upset. Kennedy was so embarrassed that she asked if she could change clothes so that no one would know she was a Ute. Talk about heart breaking! We both agreed that based on our experience last year at the Utes vs. USC game, USC fans were much classier!

Five minutes after I got there, Lucero and I made an executive decision to leave and get the kids some cold snacks, shade, and possibly move to the other side of the stadium with our fellow Utes in the hopes that cheering with other fans would put the kids in better moods.

img_7146

We sadly lasted three quarters longer last year than this year.

img_2961-2

Maybe the cotton candy last year was the key?

img_2974

ICEES placated the kids for a few minutes, but before halftime hit, we decided it wasn’t worth going back in, even if we had found different seats. I hate thinking about the waste of time and money, but at some point, we had to come to terms with the fact that this was a sunk cost.

With the kids melting down in the heat all around us, Lucero and I pointed out how this would be one of those days we would look back on in ten years and say, “Remember that time we took five kids to the Rose Bowl for a football game in 85 degree weather? Yeah… that was a disaster!” Lucero posted a pic on Instagram of her and the kids “having a great time” at the game and we laughed, knowing that only we will know the true story behind the “great time.”

img_5504

The saddest part was that although the Utes won, we didn’t stick around long enough to see a touchdown, which I’m sure would have cheered up poor Kennedy. It was just an epic fail of a day all around. We gave Lucero and the kids consoling hugs before going our separate ways and prayed that the kids would fall asleep in the car on the way home (which they did… a bright spot in our day!)

Fortunately for me and Jake, we had a luau dinner/fundraiser event for the twins’ preschool to go to that night, and were able to relax and have fun at the end of a very tiring and disastrous day. It was the first time we were having  Charlotte and Claire, identical twin high school seniors I’ve known from church ever since they were just barely in Young Women’s, over to babysit, and while our twins initially freaked out at the new sitters, they ended up becoming great friends. Identical twins babysitting identical twins (plus one)… TWO cute!

Last of Utah and Vegas Wedding

On our last day in Utah, we had plans to go to the Tracy Aviary in Salt Lake, but it closed early, so instead, we went to Liberty Park, which had received a major upgrade since the time Jake and I were living in Salt Lake. We drove past Jake’s dilapidated old bungalow house he lived in during college when we met, not far from the park. Memories! Aunt Sarah and Uncle Mike met us at Liberty for some playtime.

Meredith had the time of her life on the swings. Her soft little tufts of hair are totally irresistible– it’s the softest penguin fuzz ever!

After Liberty Park, we visited our friends, Alex and Hillary, in SLC. Their little girl, Ann, was a great sport sharing her toys with all the girls. She took Meredith’s poking and prodding like a champ!

We had a whirlwind week of fun in Utah and the girls were sad to leave Grammy’s… until they found out Grammy and Grandpa were coming with us part of the way on the return trip! Jake’s nephew was getting married in Vegas, and we had arranged for my parents to caravan down with us to watch the girls while we were at the wedding festivities. Not only did they come with us, my mom offered to take the twins in their car on the six hour drive to Vegas so that we would just have to worry about getting ourselves and Meredith there on time! Talk about gluttons for punishment… grandparents of the year!

We loaded the twins and gracious grandparents up with snacks, coloring books and movies in the minivan and wished them well! Meredith slept most of the way to Vegas and it was a very peaceful road trip on our end… it almost hearkened back to our pre-kids days!

Grammy found an awesome park in St. George, which was perfect for getting some energy out, and when they arrived in Vegas, they took the twins to see the Popovich Comedy Pet Theater Show (dog and cats dressed up and doing tricks) downtown.  Other than that, we didn’t hear much about their car ride… I’m assuming Grammy and Grandpa blocked it out of their memory!

Can’t believe we’ve never stopped at this St. George park before– looked awesome!

Meanwhile in Vegas… Meredith was on her way to get ready for the reception.

img_0767

When we arrived at the hotel, we realized Jake had accidentally packed my bag in the minivan, which my parents were driving. Not having anything to change into after being in the car for six hours, unshowered, I decided it would be best if he went to the luncheon while I hung back with Meredith until the minivan arrived. She was bored with the hotel room in about five seconds, so we walked around the grounds and went to the pool while waiting for Jake.

After a long day, the twins were pretty cranky when we met up at the hotel, so we fed them quickly and left them (screaming from being overtired and confused) with my parents. We took Meredith to the reception with us and she mostly slept/was passed around and admired by all the family.

Jake’s sister, Juliette, thought it was nice to hold just one baby for a change (she has two sets of twin boys, who are now in kinder and elementary!)

juliette  The next day, everyone woke up refreshed and ready to play. Jake’s family stayed at the same hotel, and we had breakfast with some of his family, as well as the girls and my parents. Then, we headed to the pool to burn some energy before going home.

The twins hung out with Grandma Celeste by the koi pond.

Jake (conveniently) forgot to pack swim gear, so it was my turn to be in the pool with the twins for a change! It was a nice day, but the wind made being in the pool freezing.

Snack time with Grammy.

img_0796 img_0799

One of the pool servers apparently took pity on us and made it her mission to bring us extra lemonades, beach balls and suggested we go use one of the cabanas for free.

img_0801

Thanks, Grammy and Grandpa for all your help! I’m sure the girls would have rather turned around and gone back to Utah with Grammy and Grandpa, but we hugged goodbye and went our separate ways. After exhausting themselves at the pool, we had the most peaceful drive back to California in history. We didn’t have to make any stops, and all of the girls slept for three and a half out of the four hours. Record shattering!

img_0803

We ate out and let the girls run around the park by our house before getting home and collapsing from the journey. While waiting in the car for Jake to run in and grab some food before the park, we entertained Meredith with silly sounds. Meredith didn’t know what to think of us pronouncing Sammy’s name with a snake-like long “S” sound… she was simultaneously entertained and spooked!

Other than that, it was a cry-free trip home!

Utah Fall Leaf Fun

When we arrived in Utah, the big Ash tree out back had only dropped a handful of leaves. A few days later, and the backyard was covered! We hit the leaf jackpot perfectly this year, and, remembering their leaf extravaganza from last November, Samantha and Amelia couldn’t wait to dive in. With the earthy smell, crinkly sound and crisp feel, Meredith was in sensory input heaven.

2015 in the leaves… they were so little!

Samantha and Amelia helped rake up a pile for about two seconds before giving up.

Hiking at Cascade Springs, Utah

One of our must-dos for the trip was to see some real fall colors. Grammy suggested hiking around Cascade Springs, and it worked out to be the perfect fall color experience… at least in theory. Sometimes I wonder why we go to all the trouble to plan fun and interesting outings, thinking the kids will be overwhelming grateful for such cool parents and will therefore be cheery and pleasant the entire time. This rarely ever works out! Someone is cranky, someone is hungry (well, can’t really blame Meredith), someone’s stomach hurts, someone is bored in the car, someone touched someone else’s leg… it never ends! And yet, we carry on.

We enjoyed a pleasant drive up Provo Canyon, past Sundance and through the Uinta National Forest until we reached Cascade Springs. Everyone was happy on the drive and the views were breathtaking.

Cascade Springs was the perfect kid and baby friendly “hike,” with a boardwalk, colorful trees and babbling brooks and bridges galore.

cascade-springs-utah-oct-2016-12 cascade-springs-utah-oct-2016-11

One of the twins’ favorite bedtime stories recently has been the Three Billy Goats Gruff, and they kept peeking under the bridges, asking if there were any trolls lurking. cascade-springs-utah-oct-2016-8 cascade-springs-utah-oct-2016-7 cascade-springs-utah-oct-2016-6

cascade-springs-utah-oct-2016-33

30 minutes into our hike, S and A started slowly deteriorating, complaining they were tired and alternately hot and cold. The same scenario happened the last time we went on a short hike over the summer at Grotto Falls in Utah. Jake and I decided we needed to toughen these two up, stat!

cascade-springs-utah-oct-2016-19

There were signs prohibiting picnicking (???!!!!) at Cascade Springs, so we drove a ways down to a scenic outlook on the side of the road and set down our blankets there. The famished twins decimated the food in the cooler while Meredith had her first baby pooplosion in the wilderness. Jake held her bare bottom over the side of the brush and let her have at it.
