Christmas Day 2018

Christmas 2018 was the first year Meredith really remembered and understood who Santa was, and it was so much fun watching her excitement Christmas morning. She kept asking, “Where’s Elfie?” (our resident Elf on the Shelf) and before opening any of her presents, she jumped around exclaiming, “Thank you, Santa! Thank you, Santa!”

Meredith is very vocal about her gratitude!

The girls opened their stockings first and after breakfast started digging in to the gift pile.

Eleanor’s first Christmas!

Eleanor got stuck under the presents!

Help!

Everyone was antsy when I didn’t let anyone open presents until we had taken a billion photos of Eleanor by the presents. You only get ONE first Christmas!

Can I be done yet?

Amelia helped Eleanor open a few presents. She loved her new Baby Lit Classic books– Emma and Sense and Sensibility.

Intermission while I put down Elle for her nap. Gift opening resumed once I got back downstairs.

The girls asked Santa for “puppy purses” and the big guy came through.

Meredith is obsessed with hot wheels and play doh.

For the grand finale, the girls went on a treasure hunt to find three new bikes outside (one was “new” to Meredith– one of the twins’ old bikes, wrapped up with pretty ribbon!). We took them for a spin immediately. Meredith is pretty good on her strider bike, but this was her first try on a real bike. No training wheels!

She’s still learning, but is making progress.

Amelia and Samantha received upgrades from their old bikes which they were getting too tall for. Instead of going with the next size up, which they would have grown out of within a year or so, we went two sizes up. The new bikes were a touch too tall, but after several rides, they got the hang of them. The hardest part is climbing aboard, since they are a little too short for them, but Grammy taught them how to mount their bikes from the curb. They were so excited to have their first gear bikes!

So happy on her new wheels!

The kids played all day and were HANGRY for our Christmas feast. Cousin Ben, Great Grandpa, and Auntie Lynn and Uncle Steve joined us for dinner– we made everyone take home tons of leftovers. SO much food.

Auntie Lynn brought the brisket and we did the sides (garlic mashed potatoes, pecan-crusted sweet potatoes, corn bread apple sage and sausage stuffing, regular stuffing, winter salad, cranberry chutney, balsamic glazed brussel sprouts with butternut squash, lemony green beans with almonds and rolls) — YUM!

I ate with the lovelies at the kids table.

My dessert selection included homemade orange cranberry sweet bread, oreo chocolate truffles, peppermint bark, apple pie from the girls’ school fundraiser, and an orange cranberry trifle that took three days to make. Special kudos to Jake for slicing thin strips of orange peel and spending an hour stirring them with sugar on the stove to create the candied orange peel on top!

Sammy enjoyed the truffles a little too much.

Tickle time.

Watching Frosty after dessert.

We had to watch Christmas movies on the lap top since our new built-in was still under construction on Christmas.

Almost ready…

Done except the floor, baseboards and stuff for the shelves.

Meredith’s new hot wheels racing track was a hit. The kids watched the cars go around and around and then… CRASH. Totally mesmerized.

Grammy and Eleanor.

Dominoes was a favorite of Jake’s growing up, but the girls were a little too crazed on sugar and excitement to sit still long enough to play. The cranky girls went straight to bed after a long day!

Christmas Eve Shepherd’s Meal and Nativity

On Christmas Eve this year, we decided to have a “Shepherd’s Meal” for our dinner, the idea being that we would eat foods the shepherds in Jesus’ time might have eaten. I had grand plans of having everyone eat Middle Eastern finger foods while sitting on pillows on the floor in candlelight, but in the end, that seemed like a bad idea with our little crew. Instead, we had soup and pita bread, kabobs, rice, dried apricots and other mediterranean foods on paper plates at the table! Maybe next year we’ll expand a little and eat something more authentic, but for this year, it worked.

After dinner, the girls were so excited to dress up in our nativity costumes as we put on our mini nativity. We will definitely have to come up with a system to rotate roles so that everyone gets to play their preferred part, because fights broke out over who got to be the coveted role of Mary. We flipped a coin and Samantha won Mary, Meredith was an angel, Amelia was a shepherd and Eleanor was uncontested in her role of Baby Jesus.

The Angel arrives.

Grammy and Eleanor were entertained.

Attempting to wrap Eleanor in “swaddling clothes.”

Our nativity production was very streamlined, but the girls loved “acting.”

We finally got to use the very expensive plate  I won at the school’s silent auction that Samantha’s class made. Hope Santa and the reindeer enjoyed!

Christmas Sing Along 2018

Eleanor and Meredith clapped along (and in Meredith’s case, sang along) as Samantha and Amelia performed in their school’s annual Christmas Sing Along. The twins abhor crowds and being the center of attention, so since this was their third sing-along, the only thing I wanted them to improve on was not crying in the middle of the performance! Mission accomplished.

There were no tears this year, unlike last time:

Sing-Along 2018:

Eleanor was so fascinated, especially by all those jingling jingle bells. Meredith clapped, tapped her jingle bells to the beat and sang her heart out in the audience. It will be fun to have her perform next year!

Kaylee, Amelia and Cooper.

The girls didn’t melt down this time, which is a first. When I asked them in the morning if they were actually going to sing, Amelia replied, “But it’s sooooooo long!” She has a point– the 45 minute performance could easily be cut down to 20 and still be cute!

They know all the Christmas songs/hand actions and sing them LOUDLY at home while running around like maniacs, but during any kind of performance, they are reserved. Their teachers don’t believe me when I tell them what they are like at home, because at school they are so quiet!

Last year, Amelia got overwhelmed toward the end and looked so forlorn!

This time, the girls sang some of the songs and opted out of others. Amelia just stared off into space most of the time– she does not like all the attention! Samantha attempted some of the hand actions and songs she liked.

Staring off into space…

Samantha decided she liked Rudolph well enough to participate for this one.

Nutcracker, Christmas Lights and Newport Beach Boat Parade

Samantha and Amelia have never been in to any type of show much (they only really ever care about the refreshments), but this year, I decided to take them to the Nutcracker. The show we went to was the perfect length for them and the kids in the show were so impressive! They laughed at Mother Ginger with all her kids running out from her skirts and they loved getting a cake pop at intermission. They had TONS of questions during the show, but the theater was packed with noisy kids, so I didn’t feel too bad about constantly whispering to them about what was going on.

Their friends, Parker and Maple, were at the same showing.

Later that evening, we checked out some of the lights around our town with the Nguyens. There was one house down the road from us who put together an actual ride inside their house!

Journey to Polar Point was very legit, complete with a security guard and roped line while we waited, moving seats, a lap bar, lights, sound effects, and amazing decorations… the whole deal. Apparently, the dad and his son spent $10k on this ride! And they also do one for Halloween!

Holiday ride built at Ladera Ranch house is part of plan to make Mystic City theme park

Santa was waiting to greet us at the end of the ride!

We stopped by some of the other houses to see the lights and grab some hot chocolate and treats people were selling for charity.

Another weekend of seeing the lights with Parker and Maple! We went to this same neighborhood last year and it’s always a block party there, with people selling hot chocolate and popcorn, and the entire neighborhood decked out. We didn’t see the guy dressed up as the Grinch this year, though.

This house was insane. Definitely a Clark Griswold-esque house.

The girls got out of the car and danced to the lights that were choreographed to Beatles songs at one house.

The highlight leading up to Christmas was Jake and I being invited to ride in the Newport Beach Boat Parade! Jake is friends with the husband of the Orange County Supervisor, Michelle Steele, and he invited us on their friend’s yacht for the parade. We’ve been to watch the boat parade before with the kids, but have never actually been in the parade, and it did not disappoint!

“Burning Daylight” (named after the Jack London novel, according to the yacht owner) was the lead yacht in the parade, so we had the MC on board our boat announcing Merry Christmas to the crowds on shore– it was quite the party. Hors d’oeuvres and dinner were catered on board and we tried to keep warm while we boated around for four hours. The night ended with fireworks, and it was definitely the Disneyland of boat parades! The other boats in the parade looked amazing and I was just pinching myself that we were onboard such a beautiful yacht as we waved to the crowds!

Santa driving the yacht.

This volcano-themed boat spouting fire was in the parade last time we took the girls. We also loved one of the boats that had a carousel and ferris wheel on board!

I pretended like I was Kate Middleton and practiced my royal wave to the crowds ha.

Our friends, the Smiths, were at the beach watching the parade and we waved to each other as we passed by. We had an unforgettable time!
