Easter 2014

Our Easter weekend 2014 was MUCH different than Easter 2013…

Honestly, it just doesn’t get any cuter than this, so I didn’t even try this year.
For one, we actually got out of the house! Last Easter, the twins were barely a few weeks old, so we dressed them up, took some pictures and called it a day without any more ado.
This year was a little more festive (warning: LOTS of pictures to follow).
Our Easter weekend kicked off with dinner at the Kagel’s. They usually have a Seder at their house for Passover, but this year, Auntie Lynn made it casual, for which we were grateful since I have no idea how we would have gotten the twins to sit still through an entire Seder service!

Auntie Lynn made all the traditional foods–Matzoh with Charoset for an appetizer, followed by Matzoh Ball Soup, Potato Kugel, chicken, and of course, her delicious Fruit Kugel. Samantha and Amelia loved their first Passover!

Samantha sips daintily slurps her Matzoh Ball Soup.

Full from all that kugel!

On Sunday, we postponed giving out Easter baskets until the afternoon so that we wouldn’t be rushed before church. Jake gave a great talk on the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and the girls and I were very proud…well, for the five minutes we were able to hear it, that is! The girls had just gotten up from their nap, but Jake needed to leave for church right then so he wouldn’t be late to get up on the stand for his talk. Five minutes after he left, I got a frantic call. “YOU LEFT YOUR KEYS ON THE HOOD OF MY CAR. THEY FLEW UP AND HIT THE WINDSHIELD AS I WAS DRIVING!!”

As Jake recounted later, as soon as my keys hit the windshield, he switched on his hazards and pulled into the median of the busy street next to our church so that he could grab the keys before they flew into the street. Then, he returned home to drop them off and hurried back to church (he made it right on time). I have no idea what my keys were doing on his car (Mommy brain?), but I consider it an Easter miracle that the keys didn’t fall into the road. I can only imagine what my stress levels would have been like had I rushed to get the girls ready, only to find that my car keys had vanished without a trace.

Anyway,  while Jake was at church, I changed the girls, fed them (BIG mistake), changed them into their backup outfits, packed the diaper bag and flew out the door. Since I can’t carry both girls by myself, I brought the double stroller, threw the girls in it once I had parked, wheeled them to the front of the church, grabbed Samantha and dropped her off in the foyer where a friend was sitting who could watch her for a minute and then ran back to grab Amelia. We made it just in time to hear the last five minutes of Jake’s talk. I had already proof-read it, so I already knew what it was about, but it would have been nice to hear the whole thing in person. Judging by all the compliments he received afterwards, I’m sure he did a great job. Getting to church that day is definitely on my list of top ten stressful moments of all time…well maybe not of all time, but definitely out of 2014 so far.

Our neighbor, CJ, is our designated Easter Sunday photographer. He took our photo last year too!

Easter 2013

Easter 2014. Yep, same dress. I just fit in it a lot better now!

After church, the girls went down for a nap, which gave me just enough time to set out the girls’ Easter baskets, stuff some plastic eggs with Cheerios and prepare roasted chicken and potatoes, honey-glazed carrots, and homemade parmesan pull-apart rolls for dinner (actually, my rock star of a husband made the rolls AND dessert…chocolate molten lava cake….yum!)

Samantha’s basket included a book, a stuffed ducky, and a new sun hat. If you were being observant, you would have noticed that the baskets and the ducky are the same ones we used last year in the above photos. Yes, we like to take advantage of the fact that the girls have no memory while we still can.

Amelia’s basket included a book, a new sun hat, a stuffed bunny and a new monkey Wub since the pacifier part of her old one became detached from the monkey a few weeks ago. Every time she’s seen the pacifier-less monkey lying around, she’s been picking it up and looking forlorn once she realizes it’s no longer a pacifier.

The girls also received a joint basket with sand toys, new sippy cups, some suction bowls, and toddler utensils. Basically I threw in everything I already needed to buy them and called it an “Easter Basket.”

Samantha was very methodical about going through each item in her basket.

Whereas Amelia was not.

Samantha opened her card while Amelia photobombed her.
We still haven’t quite got the hang of what the actual purpose of a card is.

Amelia was pretty happy with her bunny.

Easy to please. Duly noted for future Easters.

Amelia’s walking skills have increased exponentially since last week. Thursday, she took her first three steps in a row and steadily improved her balance over the weekend. At the Kagel’s on Saturday, she was taking five to six steps at a time and by Easter, she was a regular pro, taking ten plus steps at a time! Go Amelia!
Sticking her tongue out in concentration.
All these presents and it’s not my birthday…what’s the catch?

These were taken this morning, but out of all their Easter presents, who knew the girls would get most excited over their new suction bowls and utensils. The suction bowls don’t actually suction well to their trays (the reviews I read before buying said they were good for toddlers learning to eat from a bowl without them sliding around, but wouldn’t stay put if said toddlers were purposefully pulling on them), but as far as Samantha and Amelia were concerned, the suction was the best part! They loved pulling the bowls up over, and over and over…

Sending Cheerios flying, obviously.

We’re big girls now.

The toddler spoons and forks were also big hits. In an attempt to begin civilizing the girls, I bought them in the hopes that they would eventually eat like human beings if we practiced everyday for the next few months. I’m not holding my breath.

The girls got the hang of it with our help guiding the spoon or fork into the bowl and then placing it in their mouths. Now, they insist on “feeding” themselves using the utensils, even if the food in their bowls are not conducive to toddler utensil maneuvering.

Back to Easter…after opening baskets, we went to the park and had an Easter Egg “hunt,” which consisted of me throwing plastic eggs filled with Cheerios across the grass in every direction. The girls went wild trying to pick them up.

Once they figured out there were Cheerios inside the eggs, their efforts to gather all the eggs before the other intensified.

The girls’ pink polka dotted sun hats are getting too small, but their new sun hats are way too HUGE. I can’t ever get the sizing right!

Samantha and Amelia with their bounty.

The girls didn’t really grasp the concept of putting the eggs inside the basket.

In fact, they didn’t really grasp the concept of baskets at all.

Help!

Mmmmmm…plastic from China…
Samantha had a grand ol’ time with Daddy rolling down the hill.

Amelia shows off her shades.

I’m CUTE and I know it!

Love the rays of sun shining down on Queen Sammy!

Enjoying Easter with my girls.

Hope you all had a wonderful Easter weekend!

Celebrating Spring

This weekend, we packed up the stroller and walked up to our community’s Spring Celebration. There were mainly activities for older kids (face painting, trampoline bungy jumping, pony rides, Easter egg hunt, etc.), but Samantha and Amelia still didn’t want to miss the action and insisted we check it out.
I shouldn’t have bet Jake money that the girls would cry when meeting the creepy Easter Bunny…they loved him a little too much.

I had to subdue my urge to open the gate and free all the poor animals cooped up in the tiny petting zoo. Instead, I let Samantha and Amelia pet the poor creatures while vowing never to patronize such an establishment again.

Seriously, the ponies and baby cow were pacing nervously back and forth in their little stall while a million toddlers reached out to grab their manes. It was soooooooo sad (says the mom who let her twin toddler terrors pet them too!)

I felt less bad for the unnaturally fat bunnies and pig.

More animal torture! A little preview of what we can do next time when the girls are a bit older.

The girls were super disappointed that we arrived too late for the Easter Egg hunt…although I’m not sure how much of a “hunt” it was considering there were hundreds of eggs just lying everywhere.

The girls enjoyed a snack while wishing they could be the kids on the trampolines.

Forget ponies and the Easter Bunny–all the girls really wanted to do was climb on the play equipment. Technically, this play structure was only supposed to be for kids ages 2-5, but because the girls are so tall and big, no one bats an eye. They probably just think the girls are way behind on their motor skills since they still crawl!
One of the boys started flirting with Samantha, but she played hard to get.

After their nap, the girls went back outside for some more action.
Trying out the local vegetation.

As two extremely vicious Golden Retrievers (oxymoron!) approached, Bandit heroically tried to save the girls who were 30 feet away on the grass with Jake. In his attempt to scare away the dangerous attackers, he knocked over the stroller, which scared the crap out of him in the process.
Sunday afternoon, Jake took the girls on a little excursion to our patio and texted me updates as I was making dinner.

I would have gone out there to stop the madness had I seen this text before they came back inside! Apparently, the girls really like the taste of the rosemary and spearmint we have in the garden…well, soon to be garden. It’s mostly weeds right now, but we have grand plans for our raised garden bed this year!

Weirdos.
After dinner, we took the girls outside with their walker and they took turns enthusiastically strolling up and down the sidewalk with it, while we Skyped Grandma and Grandpa so they could say hello. Samantha took 15 steps on Sunday by herself, while Amelia has yet to breach two. The girls loved “walking” outside so much, though, that I anticipate some giant leaps forward this week now that they have some more motivation. The girls have realized that once they can walk consistently, they can learn to run, thereby increasing the chances that they can escape from me to check out car tires, the gutter, trash cans, sticks, and other random and disgusting objects along the path from which I had to continuously pull them away. They also know that once they can run/walk in opposite directions, it’s all over for me. That’s all the motivation they need!

Earthquakes and Easter Bunnies

Friday around 9 p.m., I was sitting in the office when I felt the house start shaking. It was subtle at first, but when the shaking increased and didn’t go away after a few seconds, it finally clicked that we were having an earthquake! By the time I leaped up and ran into the girls’ room, it was already over. Amelia slept through the whole thing, but Samantha was wide awake in her crib, sitting up and smiling at me.
Whenever there’s an earthquake around here, the next order of business is to immediately jump online and hit refresh a billion times on the national earthquake tracker website until the details of our latest earthquake pops up. The epicenter was apparently in La Habra, about 30 miles north of us, and it wasn’t a very big quake this time around…about a 5.1. Just in case, I took down a bunch of picture frames in the girls’ room and made sure there weren’t any other hazards that could cause damage in the event of a more serious quake. It was a good reminder to make sure we had plan for grabbing the girls and knowing where our emergency equipment was located!
After all that excitement Friday night, we woke up bright and early Saturday morning to attend the Bunny Breakfast at South Coast Plaza. I’m a member of the Moms of Multiples Club of South Orange County, and our club had rented out part of the mall before it opened to the public for a catered breakfast, carousel rides and pictures with the Easter Bunny!

Samantha LOVED the carousel!

Amelia wanted to get off as soon as she was strapped in.

THAT’S IT? THIS THING GOES AROUND IN A CIRCLE? BO-RING!

Waiting patiently destroying the flower display while in line for pictures with the Easter Bunny.

The best part about our excursion was seeing all the other twins and triplets there…it was kind of weird not being the only ones with twins for a change.

One baby…
Two babies!
Instead of some creepy guy dressed up inside an Easter Bunny suit, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the bunny was, in fact, a creepy, electronic, talking/moving bunny. The girls were obsessed with it and thus, wouldn’t look at the camera for pictures. You’d think the photo people would have thought this through.

But wait…there’s more! After our morning with the Easter bunny, the girls napped in the car while we drove to LA to see our friends, Heather and Kael, and their little one, Sam, who is exactly three days older than the girls. The last time the girls saw Sam, they were only a few months old! Sam was born with achondroplasia (a form of dwarfism) and has been very busy going to numerous doctor’s appointments with a specialist, undergoing sleep studies, and even undergoing a spinal decompression surgery a few months ago. He is such a tough guy and the most adorable little boy in the history of ever!

I don’t know how Heather and Kael find the time to do it all…Heather is graduating from UCLA medical school in a few months, Kael works crazy hours at his music production company, they are working on their band, Faded Paper Figures,’ fourth album (I love their music…you should check them out!), and, oh yeah, they have a one year old! Makes me tired just thinking about it!

Attack of the twins.

We went out to eat at a little cafe and the girls made an epic mess, as per usual.
Heather and I enjoyed our meal while the boys wrestled the monkeys through lunch.

Ladies man! I pretty much died every ten seconds from Sam’s cuteness. We were told that Sam was even going to make an appearance in their band’s new album– apparently, you can hear him squeal in the background of one of their songs. Can’t wait to hear it!

After lunch, we played at the park, which the the girls thought was SO much better than ours at home. Can you say, rock wall?
You go first…no, YOU go first!

Sam and Sammy Girl.

Sam has more hair than both the girls combined.

Amelia thwarted all of our attempts to get a picture of all three babies together.

What’s that curly stuff on top of your head and how come I don’t have any?

After the park, it was time for the girls to go down for a nap, which was perfect, since they slept in the car on the way home. We actually arrived home a little too early for them to wake up from their nap, so we drove around random places for a while so that they could get their full 1.5 hours of nap time! Yep, we will do just about anything to make sure the girls get their sleep.

That was our busy weekend! Hope you had a great one, too!

Lots of love,
