Solid Food: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

I have to admit, I was pretty excited about Samantha and Amelia starting solid foods. After all, it’s an important milestone and I envisioned all the fun we’d have taking pictures of the girls’ faces as they tried carrots and apples for the first time. I imagined all of us sitting happily around the dinner table eating together, instead of feeling guilty eating a steak as the girls watched every bite that went into our mouths. The excited feeling quickly changed once I realized starting solids adds a whole new level of complexity to our routine that I wasn’t prepared for. First off, (TMI) the girls’ poop is no longer the mushy, easy to wipe stuff. They are so much harder to clean now and the SMELL! Oh how I miss milk/formula only poop!
Starting solids has also increased the guess work when it comes to the girls’ moods. Last night, poor Samantha had some kind of tummy trouble, whether from her dinner or just being under the weather, I don’t know. She threw up a little bit right after bedtime and then again in her crib a few hours later. Jake and I were up until midnight holding her and making sure she was okay. Samantha took a miracle three hour nap today, but other than that, seemed totally normal. Since her puke was really watery and didn’t have any food in it, I’m not sure if it was a reaction to something she had eaten, or if something just didn’t agree. Poor baby!
Since the girls like to snack on their bottles every two or so hours, our pediatrician said we could start feeding them two or three meals a day to try and extend them a little bit between bottles. So far, it’s really helped regulate their schedules a bit as they are starting to stay up longer between naps and nap at more regular times, hooray!
The downside to this is that meal time is so much WORK. I bring one twin downstairs, strap her in the high chair, give her a spoon or toy to play with, which inevitably ends up on the floor by the time I bring the other twin down and get her set up. Then, I’ve usually forgotten the bibs upstairs, so I run to get those, by which point the girls are getting bored and fussy. I make some oatmeal and fruit for breakfast, veggies and fruit for lunch and veggies for dinner, feed the girls a few spoonfuls in between bending down to pick up utensils and toys they’ve dropped (probably intentionally) and then they are usually done.
The clean-up of the high chairs, girls’ faces/hands, the toys that now have food all over them, and the floor splattered with food, utensils and toys usually takes way longer than the actual meal does. Then, the girls sometimes want a sip of water out of their sippy cups and/or a little bit of a bottle before I take each twin back upstairs one at a time. Once I get organized and start storing bibs/toys downstairs, I’m sure things will go a lot smoother. Right now, I feel like I’m constantly running around with my head cut off!
Today, the girls invited Great Grandpa over to eat dinner with them.
As Jake was blessing the food, we heard a SPLATTER and looked down to see this:
Could have been a lot worse, but it was still a pain to clean up those carrots!
Some of the splatter even got on Bandit, who was happy the girls finally decided to share.

Samantha was very pleased with herself. I have a feeling she is logging this event in that little memory of hers under “Throw bowl of food off table = watch mommy and daddy clean it up = funny!”

On a totally unrelated note, here’s a picture of Amelia surfing the web today:

Six Month Photos

After five attempts at scheduling a time for the girls to get their photos taken, the girls finally synced their schedules enough that I could bring them in at the same time. As you will recall, the last time the girls had their photos taken at the store, a few days ago, we didn’t get any decent pictures of Amelia because she refused to be put down at all. On the second try, Amelia was a little bit more cooperative, while Samantha was pretty cranky, which was ok, since we already had some individual shots of her from the previous day. It was a miracle we got any cute pictures of the girls together at all!

Overall, our experience at Buy Buy Baby was probably not the ideal birthday activity for the girls. Between constantly juggling the twins, trying to keep them happy and being forced to listen to the photographer scream obnoxiously in a high, shrill voice, “Look at meeeeee, babies!!!” for an hour, we were more than ready to kill ourselves by the time it was over. I think Jake’s exact words were, “I want to take a sharpened pencil and jam one in each ear.”  Therefore, I decided to forgo an outfit change I had planned for the girls and call it good.

On top of dealing with the annoying photographer, she made us sit through her sales spiel (“And for only $895, you can get 25 gooooorgeous 16x20s of your favorite pose, plus 85 wallet sized portraits and a framed montage!”), even though I had announced at the beginning that I was sure all I wanted was the CD with the pictures on it so I could print them myself. Samantha and Amelia’s eyes had started to glaze over throughout all this and Jake and I were anxious to get out of there…it was like holding two ticking time bombs. You’d think people who work with babies and kids ALL the time would understand that parents NEED to get out of there as quickly as possible before those bombs go off.

In the end, I’m grateful the photographer finally got some good shots so that we NEVER have to go back!

Miss Samantha. I’m ready for my close up!

I needed a picture of her ankle rolls.

You want me to play with my feet for this shot? No prob!

  Looking mischievous…mischievously cute, that is!

Whoa there!
What a Gerber baby.
Samantha really loved being in the bath.

 Amelia: 2nd attempt.
Miss blue eyes.
Both of them together! It’s a miracle!

Hey! This is kinda fun!
This is my contemplation pose.

Looking chubby!

Splish splash, Amelia’s in her bath!

In the bath WITH Samantha? Not cool, guys.

About half way through the bath tub pictures, they started hitting each other.

Ooooh! A distraction!

So THAT’S what cherries taste like!
Mom! Amelia’s annoying me!

6 Months

Yesterday was Samantha and Amelia’s 6 Month Birthday. If the next six months fly by as quickly as the first six months did, I am definitely going to have to start planning their one year birthday party NOW. It’s amazing to me how much the girls have grown and how little of the past six months I actually remember. I’m just glad I’ve made it this far alive!

Six months ago, Jake wheeled me into the hospital for my scheduled induction, not knowing if we would meet the girls that night…or the next day…or the next.

Six months ago, I ended up getting a c-section after spending all night wide awake, uncomfortable, and not dilating more than a few centimeters!

Six months ago, we heard Samantha let out her banshee wail for the first time, followed by a much quieter Amelia two minutes later.

Six months ago, Samantha weighed 6 pounds, 9 ounces and was 18.5 inches long while Amelia weighed 5 pounds, 8 ounces, and was 17.5 inches long.

Six months ago, the crew of nurses (four per baby and fifteen medical professionals in the OR!) held two babies up to my face for a kiss before whisking them off to be poked, prodded, and measured.

Six months ago, the girls spent their first thirty minutes with their Daddy while I was being sewn up.

Six months ago, I got to cuddle Samantha and Amelia for the first time as I was wheeled into the recovery room.

Six months ago, I pressed the button in the hospital hallway that played Brahm’s Lullaby throughout the hospital (twice!), announcing that two babies had been born.

Six months ago began an insane blur of sleepless nights, nursing, pumping, bottle feeding, diaper changing, swaddling, rocking, and general craziness times two.

Six months ago, Jake and I fell totally in love with two helpless little creatures.

Six. Months.

It seems so long ago, yet it’s gone by so fast. I can’t remember what life was like before the girls were born! Six months ago, I remember thinking we would never get to this point and how far away two, three, four, five, six months seemed. I’m sure I’ll feel the same way when the girls turn one…

…on their first day of kindergarten

…when they get their driver’s licenses

…when they graduate college

Sob and sniff! Alright, I’m going to start crying, so let’s move on to some pictures!

For the girls’ six month birthday, I wanted to get some professional photos taken. We are getting family pictures taken in October, but I didn’t want to wait until then to take some pictures of the girls, so I ran into the little photo studio at our local Buy Buy Baby. Yay for coupons!

Amelia really wanted to pick out what outfit she should wear for her photos and begged me to be able to wear her beret, jean dress and cherry necklace (thanks, Grandma!).  Too bad the dress and beret were a little too big…hopefully next month they will fit better for photos!

These outfits ended up being a little too big as well, but they’re still cute!

It’s a good thing I got at least one picture of the girls together on their actual birthday. At the photo place, Samantha was soaking up all the attention and giggled throughout two outfit changes and multiple props and poses. She was such an attention hog!

As soon as I tried to put Amelia down, however, she started bawling uncontrollably, kind of like when my sister tried to take her photos in Utah. I’m starting to see a pattern! As soon as I picked her up, she was still sniffling, but stopped crying; she just refused to be put down under any circumstance. The photographer wasn’t able to get a single picture of her with so much as a neutral face, so we had to re-schedule for Friday. Getting them out the door, changing their outfits, and dancing around to get them to smile was exhausting enough, so I’m not looking forward to going back. Maybe I’ll just pretend I have one child, pay for Samantha’s pictures, and move on.

To the girls’ dismay, I fed them peas for the first time on their birthday. PEAS. ON THEIR HALF BIRTHDAY. I know. I’m a horrible person.  Amelia was none too pleased to have to eat peas on her big day, so I’m sure that’s why she was fussy. For some reason, the peas made the girls really gassy and miserable all night. We won’t try peas again for a while.

Gotta get the classic finger in mouth pose, obviously.

The girls were pretty exhausted after their trip to the photo studio, so they chilled on the bed for a while until it was time for our walk.
Target identified.

Hmmm…interesting…

Ok, get me outta here!

LIFE’S NOT FAIR!!!! (Note a giggling Amelia in the background!)

Here’s to another six months of torturing your sister!

Avocado Encore and Grand Premier of Squash

Avocado remains the top contender for the girls’ favorite food so far. I guess when you’ve only tried three foods in your life, there’s not too much competition.

After gorging herself on avocado, Samantha grabbed my phone and started taking self-portraits.

Amelia’s turn. Check it yo.

I don’t always eat avocado. But when I do, I make sure it gets all over my eyebrows and inside my nostrils.

Don’t take my phone away!

After a few days of avocado, it was time for squash. Daddy picked out the best-looking butternut squash at the store and we even made a little side dish for ourselves before pureeing some for the girls. At first, they seemed to really like it.

…although their penchant for plastic bowls and rings doesn’t really set the taste standard too high.

As the meal went on, Amelia was decidedly less enthused with her squash.

She seemed confused the whole time, as if she couldn’t figure out why sometimes when she opened her mouth she got avocado, sometimes squash, and other times her own fingers, an empty spoon, or Samantha’s foot.

Each time I fed Amelia a spoonful, Samantha watched in fear while making this weird, guttural grunting noise. “I WANT MORE!” she pouted every time she watched her sister eat.

When all was said and done, squash got a mediocre review by both girls. Today, I noticed their eyes were watery and they seemed fussier than normal…I’m not sure if they’re allergic to the squash or if some other kind of allergen is bothering them. Squash has officially been, well, squashed. Moving on to the next veggie!
