Samantha has a tooth!

We discovered yesterday that Samantha finally has her first tooth! Before she got too excited about catching up to Amelia, we told her that Amelia now has two teeth–both of her lower central incisors–and is still ahead! Samantha has vowed to surpass her sister in teeth supremacy somehow.

I AM QUEEN Samantha and I looketh down upon my subjects!

I’m a toothy girl, just like my sis!

In addition to cutting her first tooth, Samantha decided it would be exciting to fall off our bed. Last night, Jake was changing Amelia’s diaper and getting her ready for bed as Samantha played next to them. I was washing bottles in the laundry room, when I heard a THUD and then WAAAAHHHHHHHHH! I ran in to see poor Samantha crying on the floor and a horrified Jake swooping down to grab her. Quelling the urge to murder Jake right then and there, I frantically ran over to Samantha and was probably more hysterical than she was. In all the commotion, Amelia started bawling as well. The upside was that Samantha had crawled backwards off the bed and landed on her butt instead of going down head first, although that didn’t make it any less scary as we have an extra tall bed. Samantha stopped crying in about 30 seconds and was fine after that, although I don’t know if Jake and I were. No more playing on the bed for Samantha!

On a totally unrelated note, my new double stroller finally arrived off Amazon! Pushing one twin in the single stroller, carrying one in the Ergo, holding on to the leash with one hand, and carrying toys/a blanket for the park in the other was getting really old after selling my other double stroller. The snap n go served us well, but this one is a side-by-side instead of a tandem and I think the girls like it a lot better because no one has to be squished in the back, staring at the other twin’s backside. This little ditty is super easy to fold up and maneuver…I got it primarily for taking quick walks around the neighborhood and running errands. It also fits through standard doors, which is a huge plus since a lot of the bigger jogging double strollers don’t. I still have my eye on a double jogging stroller, but will have to save up for it since it’s not cheap.

So far, the girls have enjoyed holding hands in their stroller, stealing one another’s Wubbanunbs and watching Bandit on our rides. We’ve even been on an errand with Grandma and the girls…navigating the aisles of Hobby Lobby was easy with the new stroller! I also ordered this portable stroller sunshade, which works quite nicely too since the shades that came with the stroller are pretty much useless.

Cruising around the neighborhood.

Happy 7 Month Birthday!

Today is Samantha and Amelia’s 7 month birthday…I feel like I was just getting over them turning 6 months and then BAM! Another crazy month flew by. The girls are still sick, although Samantha seems on the upswing (I said that last week too, so who knows). I thought Amelia might dodge it altogether, but she ended up coming down with what Samantha has earlier this week and seems about 4-5 days behind Samantha.

To recap our week, it’s been lots of coughing, sneezing, sniffling, crankiness, crying while administering medicine, crying while clearing the snot out of noses with the dreaded bulb syringe, night waking and general not fun-ness over here. Even Jake is sick. I’m the sole survivor who seems to have avoided the plague; I guess it’s those years of teaching and being exposed to every germ known to man that have made me immune to all sorts of diseases. Needless to say, with two out of two babies not feeling well and one out of two adults out of commission, it hasn’t been our favorite few weeks.

One of our rare non-miserable moments this week. The twins are always excited when Daddy comes home!

Amelia has a tooth!

Last night, we discovered that Amelia has her first tooth poking through! Both girls have been drooling excessively and chewing on anything they can get their hands on for months now, and I kept thinking a tooth was going to pop up any day, but it never did…until now! Amelia is very proud of her brand new mandibular central incisor, and even more proud that she finally beat Samantha at something!

I’m a toothy girl!

Amelia has been about two weeks behind Samantha in just about everything since she was just a little fetus. At each ultrasound, Twin B was consistently two weeks behind in weight and development and since birth, she’s been about two weeks behind in motor skills. When Samantha started swatting at toys, Amelia was right behind her; when Samantha began sitting up, Amelia followed a few weeks later. No sign of a tooth for Samantha though…Amelia finally beat her to the chase.

I am the champion, my frie-ends!
Boo-yah!

No wonder Amelia has been begging for her mesh feeder with frozen baby food the past week. It’s probably soothing on those little gums of hers.

I’ve been making batches of baby food periodically and am amassing quite the stash. $1.49 bag of peeled and cut organic carrots from Trader Joe’s = 16 one ounce portions of baby food, Pears and apples are equally cheap at Trader Joe’s…a two-pound bag of apples cost $2.49 and a two-pound bag of pears cost $2.29, with each bag making almost thirty portions.

MOOOOOMMMMM, I’m out of pear!

That’s more like it.

In other news, the girls have been learning to use a sippy cup with water the past few weeks. I don’t think any children could be more excited about drinking water than the twins. They start flapping their arms and grunting every time I get the cups out.

Just a girl and her sippy. Nothing to see here.

Watching Bandit protect us from children walking on the trail out back.

Mastering the art of the sippy is a work in progress.

Update on Samantha: Amelia was her jolly little self today, while Samantha was lethargic and out of sorts. In addition to her wet cough and noisy breathing, she seemed more tired and wasn’t as interested in playing or laughing like she normally is. I wanted to make sure she would be ok through the night, and was concerned about her noisy breathing and wheezing, so when Jake got home, we called our ped (bonus points that after hours, our call when straight to her cell and she picked up on the second ring) who advised us to go in to the after-hours clinic. Jake took Samantha for a little daddy-daughter date, while Amelia and I had mommy-daughter time at home. Our bedtime ritual was infinitely easier with just Amelia; it was so nice to be done after just one bath, pajamas, story, bottle and rocking to sleep.

Stoked about staying up way past her bed time, Samantha was smiley and giggly when she got home with Jake…probably the best mood she had been in all day. Apparently, Samantha was playful and happy the whole time at the doctor (WHY were you so cranky today, then, Samantha?!) and the staff had a hard time believing she was sick. Her lungs, ears and throat checked out just fine and the doc said she sounded really stuffy, but no fluid in her lungs or chest congestion like I had thought. She told Jake to watch for Samantha’s croup at night, but other than that, it seems like she just has a cold. After an afternoon of freaking out while reading up on acute epiglottis and pneumonia, the peace of mind the trip to the doc gave me was worth it.

This weekend, after selling my beloved Snap n Go Double Stroller to a cute couple who just had twins, our walks have been considerably less convenient. Today, I strapped Amelia in the bjorn, stuck Samantha in the umbrella stroller and walked the girls, plus Bandit, around the neighborhood. I was really missing the double stroller by the time we got home! The girls are getting too big for their car seats (whichever twin is in the back of the stroller has scrunched feet/legs the whole time from the car seat in front of her because her legs are so long), so I put the seats, plus the stroller on Craig’s List and definitely didn’t anticipate the stroller selling that fast.  I’ve been in talks with a lady in L.A. who is selling her brand new Baby Jogger Summit X3 Double for $150 less than retail, so we will see if that pans out. I’m dying to get it, but don’t have the time to drive up there this week, so it may have to wait. I miss you dearly Double Snap n Go!

Off With Her Helmet!

Last Thursday was Samantha’s last day wearing her helmet. It was hard to believe it had already been eight weeks! Time flew by so fast that I still have a bag of stickers and rhinestones from Michael’s I was going to use to decorate her helmet after we painted it sitting unused in the office! Oops…never got around to that! Anyway, even though I felt so horrible for her those first few weeks, Samantha never really seemed to mind her helmet…it really wasn’t that bad.
On Monday, we went to our last appointment to see how Samantha’s head was doing with the helmet off and to take some final measurements. After seeing the before and after pictures, it was obvious that the change in her head shape was pretty substantial. Although Samantha will always have kind of a square-shaped head due to her bone structure, her head has lengthened and she doesn’t have a huge flat spot anymore. The clinician said Samantha’s progress was fantastic!
As you can see, Samantha was excited to graduate.
To celebrate, the girls and I played at the park, helmet-free.

Wow! My head is so much easier to lift now! And I can see!

Hey sister! I have a secret for you!
Love you sis!

Amelia had grown pretty used to slapping, pulling and biting Samantha’s helmet and was clearly confused as to where the helmet had gone.

Yay! I can bite your hair now!

Tee hee.

What’s that green stuff?

I’ll pull up the blanket and you touch the grass!

I want it!

20 minutes later and still fascinated with the grass.

Happy girls.

So, how was your day?

Spontaneous wrestling match!

Arrrgh!

Grab! Kick! Pinch!

Pooped.

Samantha is still getting used to the fact that she doesn’t have an advantage in wrestling anymore without her helmet!
Lots of love,
