Let them eat cake!

After Samantha and Amelia’s disastrous Smash Cake Attempt #1 during their birthday party, we decided to preserve their giant cupcakes (NOT an easy task, considering Jake and I really wanted to eat them), until the next day when the girls were better rested.
Flash-back to the birthday party Cake Smash FAIL:
The next morning, we set up my new photo backdrop on our patio, suited up the girls in their outfits and brought the cupcakes out for one last attempt!
Side-note: Jake made me an awesome DIY photo backdrop using PVC pipe for the frame and some plexiglass to hold down the paper backdrop/protect it from flying cake. The plexiglass also added a little sheen to our photos, which I love! I then found some cute pink polka-dotted seamless paper at Hobby Lobby that we taped to the PVC pipe frame to finish off the photo backdrop.
Here’s Samantha and Amelia shopping with Daddy at Home Depot for the parts to make the photo backdrop on their real birthday. What better way to spend a first birthday? (Note my beloved stroller shouldering the load of the PVC pipe– it’s a multi-purpose stroller, I tell you! Also note the adorable jelly sandals the girls are sporting…when did they get old enough to wear shoes?)

Without further ado, here’s Cake Smash #2:
Ummmm…I was told there was a giant cupcake involved?

Call my agent. This is NOT what I signed up for.

Now THIS is what I’m talkin’ about!

For an unknown reason, Samantha was more interested in the candle than the 30,984 calories worth of pure sugar in front of her.

After a few minutes, Amelia finally figured it out.

BOOM! First, Amelia managed to extract hurl the chocolate cupcake wrapper off the cupcake.

Then, she dove in, head first.

And then she kept going…

And going…

And going…
She would stop every few minutes and look up at me, incredulously, as if to ask, “Is it seriously ok that I’m eating this?” Live it up, girl! You won’t be eating this much sugar again until next year’s party!
Meanwhile, dainty Samantha hadn’t touched hers. It was so funny to see the differences in the girls’ personalities come alive. I would have bet money that Samantha would have been the most enthusiastic about her cake since she’s usually more daring/messy, but she really surprised all of us with her careful, hesitant demeanor. Amelia, on the other hand, showed us that she’s definitely all about living life to the fullest. She couldn’t have cared less about the mess!

 BEST DAY OF MY LIFE!

You’ve got a little frosting on your face, Amelia.

THIS IS AWESOME.

Thanks, Mom. You’re the best!

This totally makes up for all the times you’ve bathed me, dressed me and diaper changed me when I didn’t want you to!

In typical Samantha fashion, instead of sampling her own cupcake, she decided to steal some of her sister’s.

GIMME GIMME.

Finally, after placing Samantha’s hand in the frosting, she took a taste of her own cupcake. Apparently, it was not up to her standards. I ASKED FOR CREAM CHEESE FROSTING. THIS IS BUTTERCREAM.
Since Amelia isn’t picky, she decided to help Samantha out with hers, while Samantha took the opportunity to check out the furry thing on Amelia’s head.

Let the good times roll.

After a while, Amelia had more fun squishing and throwing the cake than eating it.

Samantha eventually ignored the lack of taste perfection in her cupcake. Way to lower your standards, Samantha!

NO, I AM NOT LETTING MY ONE YEAR OLD LICK FROSTING OFF MY FINGER.
NO, I AM NOT SHOVING CAKE INTO MY ONE YEAR OLD’S MOUTH WHILE SHE CRIES BECAUSE SHE’S HAD ENOUGH.

Tee hee. Look what I did!

NO, SERIOUSLY, BEST DAY OF MY LIFE.
I STILL DON’T LIKE IT, BUT I’M EATING IT ANYWAY.
Even when she’s covered in frosting and cake, Samantha still poses for photos!

And so began my lifelong struggle with sugar cravings.

You’re going to pay for this later, Mom. BWAHAHAHA.

After both cupcakes had been smashed into oblivion, Samantha cuddled with Daddy and told him all about the crazy day she was having. “So then, Mom put down this giant cupcake in front of me and I was like, ‘Who are you and what have you done with Mommy?'”
The aftermath.

One last fist in the cake for good measure.
Ka-POW!

Stayin’ alive!

Grandma and Grandpa held the girls at a distance post-smash.

I hope the girls will one day title this: “Best Parents EVER.”
Uncle Mike, Jake and Aunt Sarah with the girls.
Thanks to Aunt Sarah for capturing some unforgettable memories!
My favorite photo…it encapsulates Amelia’s personality so well!

All in all, Cake Smash Attempt #2 was a success! A special thanks to whoever invented cake smashes…pure genius!

Lots of love,

Samantha and Amelia’s “Baby Love” 1st Birthday Party: Part Three

Now that I’ve covered the decor and food, it’s time for the actual part-ay! Saturday morning was just as hectic as the previous few days. My dad ran around town picking up all the food and balloons, my cousin, Allison, helped me finalize the table decor, her husband, Zack quickly hosed down lawn chairs and set up outdoor tables, and my Aunt Lynn and I frantically prepped the food items that needed to go out at the last minute.

Oh, and did I mention transporting the rosette cakes and smash cakes from my house to the party locale? That required a few painstakingly slow trips with one person driving and another (usually Aunt Sarah or Uncle Mike) holding onto the cake for dear life. I’m sure my reassuring comments that if so much as a dent was made in the cakes, I would kill them, and what a shame it would be for them to be dead on Samantha and Amelia’s birthday, really rallied the troops.

To summarize, the whole day was pretty much a chaotic blur of food, sugar, babies and lots of people! I was running around so much that I definitely regret forgetting to snap pictures with everyone there. Between the twins getting fussy, trying to make it around to chat with everyone and making sure the food got out on time, documenting every detail and guest went to the wayside. At least my sister, Sarah, and my cousin, Allison, had my back by getting pictures of almost everyone for me. To those we didn’t get a snap shot of, we are so happy you came to celebrate our big day.
Let’s be real, people. This day may have been Samantha and Amelia’s birthday, but this party was mostly for me and Jake to celebrate surviving one year with the twincesses! After all, they won’t remember a thing.

Shout out to Allison and Great Auntie Lynn for helping out replenishing the buffet and cleaning up so that I could get around and talk to people. Samantha and Amelia are so excited for their new cousin coming this July!
Uncle Mike vs. balloons.

While the rest of the family was putting the finishing touches on the food and decor, Jake and my mom were back at my place, having been assigned the most important task of them all– making sure the twins went down for their morning nap on time! They did a great job and were only a few minutes late to the party, which didn’t matter, since not a lot of people had arrived.
The grand entrance! This picture pretty much sums up what it’s like to attempt to carry both girls:

We’re not in Kansas anymore!

Samantha and Amelia’s fan club: Grandma, Aunt Sarah, Great Uncle Johnny, Great Aunt Linda, Great Uncle David, Great Aunt Annie and cousins Jack, Eleri and Rhys.

Oh no! Time for Samantha’s most hated part of the day…sun screen application.
Great Grandpa with two monkeys.

The highlight of the party was seeing my friend, Katie, who happened to be here visiting from Michigan. I hadn’t met her twins, who were born in November, since she had already moved from California at that point. I was so ecstatic to finally hold the darling Iris and Elizabeth! Samantha didn’t share my enthusiasm, but that’s ok. I couldn’t believe how light they felt in comparison to my girls! Fraternal twins, Iris and Elizabeth just turned four months old and were as sweet as can be. Katie wins the award for most calm twin mama on the planet…I can’t even imagine traveling across the country on a plane with four month old twins, or coming to a birthday party with a million strangers wanting to squeeze their little cheeks. I was barely getting out of the house at all when Samantha and Amelia were that age. She is one brave mama!

Our friend, Marsha, was in baby-heaven.

Allison and Zack practice their baby holding skills.

Our friend, Diana and her husband, Phil, live down the street from us and it’s been a blast seeing their little Maya get bigger over the past few months whenever we see them out walking. One 4 1/2 month old baby and two four month old babies…I can’t handle the cuteness!

We really put the “baby” in the “Baby Love” theme! Babies, babies, everywhere! The girls’ bestie, Maliyah, and our friends, Jodi and Jared were there to celebrate.

Woo hoo!
                     Daddy and Amelia.
Party animals.

We set up a little photo booth in the backyard and set out some photo props that my mom painted. It was a fun addition to the party, but next time, we will have to remember to use two rolls of seamless paper since one roll wasn’t wide enough to fit more than two people. Amelia wasn’t in the mood for pictures, so Samantha became our “only child” for a few minutes.

My friend, Michelle, brought her two boys, who were too cool to try the photo booth with us.
Me, Amelia and fellow twin mama, Venus!
Venus and one-half of her twin-set, Rachel.
Not one…not two..but THREE sets of twins! Katie had to leave with Iris and Elizabeth, or else we would have had four sets in this photo!
Cousin love.
We’ve been friends with Lucero, Ryan, and their adorable protégés, Kennedy and Sebastian, basically since we moved to California and were both kid-less! It’s hard to believe we used to go out to movies and dinner whenever we wanted without having to call a babysitter.
The craft table was a huge hit!
Ball pit: best purchase ever. The ball pit was the twins’ birthday present and worked out great at the party, giving babies and kids of all ages something to keep them occupied!
Feeling like a third wheel next to Amelia and Maliyah.
Here, have a ball!
Wrestling match!
And now, the moment we’ve all been waiting for…cake smash!
We got Samantha and Amelia all cued up in their tutu-adorned high chairs and prepped them for their cake smash. I had originally planned on having everyone sing Happy Birthday to Samantha first, and then Amelia, with the intention of switching off who gets sung to first every year, but in all the excitement, I completely forgot to tell everyone, so we just sang to them both at the same time.
Samantha wasn’t too sure about the whole singing thing.
Amelia wasn’t either.
It took a little bit of prompting, but I eventually got the girls to try a little bit of frosting, thinking that once they realized this giant pink blob in front of them was edible and super sweet, they’d go crazy over it.
You want me to EAT this?
Boy, was I wrong! Complete FAIl! The girls were absolutely hysterical with fear/rage/GET ME OUT OF THIS HIGH CHAIR NOW-type sobbing for a solid five minutes before we finally pulled them out.
It’s MY party and I’LL CRY IF I WANT TO.
THIS…(SOB)…IS….(SOB)…TERRIBLE…(SOB)…WHERE…(SOB)…ARE…(SOB)…MY…(SOB)…ORGANIC…(SOB)…BLUEBERRIES…(SOB)?
The girls’ reactions were disappointing to say the least, and it took quite a while to get them calmed down after the cake-tastrophe. Fortunately, we saved the smash cakes and snapped some hilarious pictures the next day when they were in better moods (cake smash attempt #2 pictures to come in another post).
While Jake was calming Samantha and Amelia, the rest of us enjoyed the pink ombre rosette cakes I made, along with strawberry and vanilla ice cream cut into heart shapes. My dad was hoping I would forget all about the ice cream, since I had assigned him the job of cutting out all the hearts. No such luck!
The cake, one more time, just because it makes me smile:
We waited a while for the twins to wipe away any traumatizing cake smash memories and be happy for opening presents. By the time we finally got around to it, most people had already left. The twins received so many cute outfits, awesome books, and creative gifts, including some cds with Beatles and Coldplay lullabies (LOVE) from the girls’ mentor, Marisa and her mom, Lori, and some personalized name books from Allison and Great Auntie Lynn.  Jake and I even received cash and a few gift cards to restaurants for ourselves…I’m thinking we need to throw more birthday parties, STAT.

Our absolute favorite gift was the tabletop play fort my mom made for the girls. How adorable is this? I have no idea how she made it, but I do know she had been working on it for months. The detail on it is insane!

When all was said and done, Samantha and Amelia’s party was a smashing (minus the the cake smash part) success! What took four days to set up came down in about 45 minutes with everyone’s help. Everyone, that is, except for these two party poopers:
Sugar coma!
Thank you to everyone who was able to come celebrate with us! We will forever treasure all of our memories from Samantha and Amelia’s big day and everyone who made it possible, from Aunt Sarah capturing all the details of the party in photos, to Grandma tying ribbon on a seemingly endless amount of chocolate heart lollipops, to Grandpa for scraping black char out of my double ovens so that I could get my baking done. It was truly a team effort. Even though it was time-consuming, I loved planning the party and am so happy we were able to celebrate one whole year of life with the girls. I hope they can look back on the pictures from their party one day and wish they could remember it!
Now that the big ONE is over, on to start planning for next year’s party…
Lots of love,

Samantha and Amelia’s “Baby Love” 1st Birthday Party: The Food

Now, for my absolute favorite part of Samantha and Amelia’s “Baby Love” 1st birthday, the party food! I’ll start with dessert since who really cares about the buffet, anyway? I always eat dessert first!
The dessert buffet menu:
Two pink ombre rosette cakes
Two giant cupcakes with chocolate “wrappers” (for Samantha and Amelia)
Strawberry ice cream cut into heart shapes
Mini cupcakes
Heart-shaped brownies
White-chocolate covered pretzels
Chocolate covered strawberries
Pink and gold cake pops
Macaroons from Trader Joe’s
White chocolate bark hearts
Donuts with pink frosting and sprinkles
Apothecary jars filled with candy (pink rock candy, pink sixlets and pink gumballs)
I’ll start with the cakes first, since they took up the majority of my time preparing for this party. Thanks to the zillions of ombre rosette cakes all over Pinterest, I couldn’t NOT make one for the party. Every time I scrolled Pinterest, the ombre cakes would pop up at me, screaming, “MAKE ME.”  They just look so darn cute and although time-consuming, they were not that difficult to make. I am not a baker by any means and still managed to pull it off. The hardest part was finding the time to do the actual baking since it was a four-layer cake and I had to make two of them to ensure we had enough for all the guests.
The other tricky part was dyeing the batter just right so that the layers would look “ombre” (light to dark, in this case). I started with white vanilla batter, which I divided and added drops of Wilton food coloring in Rose to make it slightly pink. For the bottom layers, I used a strawberry cake mix and added drops of the same food coloring to create two more shades of pink batter.
The results looked pretty cool when we cut the cake!

I did all the baking two nights before the party (or should I say morning…I didn’t finish baking until 2 a.m!), saran wrapped the cooled layers and stuck them in the fridge to stay moist until I was ready to frost. I didn’t want to frost and bake in the same day, which is why I stayed up all night to get the baking out of the way, the entire time ignoring Jake’s constant comments about how crazy I was and how I needed to go to bed NOW. Thanks for the moral support, babe!

The next day, I leveled the layers of the cake to make them flat, stacked the layers, and applied a crumb coat of frosting all around the cakes to make the rosettes stick. I then made a few batches of white buttercream frosting, and, just like the cake batter, used Wilton food coloring in Rose to dye the frosting three different shades of pink. Then, I loaded three piping bags up with frosting and, using a 1M star tip, added on the rosettes. I watched a YouTube tutorial for the rosettes and after a few practice ones, was pretty efficient. Rosettes are pretty forgiving, so when I messed up, all I had to do was wipe them off and start over. I began with the bottom layer, and basically squeezed frosting out in a circular shape, moving clockwise until I created a rose shape.

Even though frosting the rosettes wasn’t that bad on the difficulty scale, I do NOT want to see piping bags again for a very long time! Frosting two of those cakes burned me out for a while!

I made the cute mini cake bunting using a free online template from Yellow Bliss Road, some baker’s twine and striped straws that I found at Koyal Wholesale.

In addition to the rosette cake, which was for the guests, I made two giant cupcakes for Samantha and Amelia’s smash cakes. I used Wilton’s awesome giant cupcake pan to bake a strawberry-flavored cake, which I baked the same night/wee hours of the morning as the rosette cake. Needless to say, I was pretty sick of baking after that night!

The next day, I frosted the cupcakes with rosettes using the same frosting I had used for one of the layers of the rosette cake and then added some edible candy flowers. The edible chocolate wrapper is definitely my favorite part of the cupcake and took a few attempts to get it right! After a few fails on my part, Jake saved the day by making two successful chocolate wrappers for me. He melted down some yellow chocolate melts, coated the cupcake pan with Pam, painted the inside of the pan with the melted chocolate, and then stuck it in the fridge to set for a half hour. He then took it out, flipped the pan upside down, tapped it gently, and, like magic, out came the chocolate wrapper! I guess the secret ingredient was using Pam because every time I tried to get the chocolate out, it broke all over the place.

Too bad Samantha and Amelia didn’t appreciate their giant cupcakes as much as I did, but more on that tomorrow!

When all was said and done, the giant cupcakes turned out AWESOME. More than one person at the party asked if they were real, particularly the chocolate wrappers!

My sweet friend, Jodi, has a mini cupcake pan and baked the cupcakes for me. I frosted them using frosting left over from the cake, topped them with pink candy pearls and hearts cut out of gold glitter cardstock.

Like I said in my last post, I had all my slaves family members working non-stop to get ready for the party. My mom made these yummy heart-shaped brownies using my silicone heart shaped baking mold and drizzled white chocolate and sprinkles over them. In addition to some food-prep duties, she and my sister were tasked with taking care of the twins while I got the rest of the baking and party prep done. They were pretty exhausted at the end of each day!

A party wouldn’t be complete without cake pops! Fortunately, I have the BabyCakes Cake Pop Maker (yes, there is such a thing, as I had to explain to an incredulous Jake), which made the process a lot easier. Just throw some batter in the machine, let them bake for eight minutes, pull them out using prongs, melt some chocolate, dip a lollipop stick in the chocolate and stick in the cake pops, let them set in the freezer for a few minutes, and then dip the whole thing in more melted chocolate and sprinkles. I made the little cake pop stand topper using Photoshop.

Warning: The U.S. Surgeon General does not endorse eating any of the products at this table.

The ice cream hearts aren’t pictured here since we made them right as we were serving the cake, but they turned out so cute, even though I’m sure no one notice or cared that they were hearts! The night before the party, my dad painstakingly emptied a few gallons of strawberry ice cream into some foil 9 x 13 pans and smoothed the ice cream evenly across the pans. As we cut the cake, my dad took my heart-shaped cookie cutter and cut out little hearts from the ice cream. Even if no one noticed, those little ice cream hearts made me smile. It’s all in the details, people!

In a perfect world, I would have spray-painted the macaroons pink and gold with some edible spray paint I had, but I completely ran out of time. Sigh. The white chocolate bark hearts didn’t turn out exactly as planned either because I underestimated how big my silicone heart mold was, and the end product turned out way too huge to be appetizing. Who wants to eat an enormous, thick, heart-shaped piece of white chocolate? Well, I guess I do, but not when there were so many other sugar-coma inducing treats around as well. They looked pretty, at least! Fortunately, the silicone heart mold worked a lot better with the brownies.

Major sugar overload. I didn’t think the rock candy would get eaten, but turns out, little kids LOVE the stuff!
The dessert table in all its high-calorie glory.
Now for the buffet menu:
Heart-shaped buttermilk pancakes
Quiche lorraine
Feta pastry puffs from Trader Joe’s
Hummus and pita chips
Veggie platter and dip
Sea salt kettle chips
Berry fruit salad
Grape and watermelon hearts skewers
Roast beef and turkey sandwiches (one platter was from Costco and one platter I ordered from a local deli for those people that didn’t like their sandwiches on croissants)

Thank you to my sweet husband for making the heart pancakes the night before the party with me! We stayed up until 2:30 a.m. making these!  The morning of the party, we re-heated the pancakes in the oven, stuck heart toothpicks through them two at a time, and topped them off with a raspberry. They turned out looking adorable. The best part is, Jake will now be able to make heart-shaped pancakes for me forevermore (hint, hint!)

In the background, you can see the adorable fruit skewers we made by placing grapes on wooden skewers and placing the heart-shaped pieces of watermelon my dad cut for us on top to create a little “wand.” I clearly got some good use out of my heart-shaped cookie cutters!

Not pictured here are the Nutella French Toast Roll-Ups (also made at 2:30 a.m the night before the party), which didn’t turn out looking so great, but were DELICIOUS! Just picture churros oozing with Nutella…yum.

My other favorites from the buffet table were the sun-dried tomato pasta salad my mom threw together and my absolute favorite salad, cranberry spinach salad with poppyseed dressing. Not as satisfying as dessert, in my opinion, but since people probably wanted to eat something else besides pure sugar, they were necessary additions. I would have personally been very happy with two buffet tables of frosting, just of the record.

Dig in!

Anyone want to come over for some lunch and dessert? We are STILL eating leftovers, four days later!

Even more party details to come tomorrow!

Lots of love,

Samantha and Amelia’s “Baby Love” First Birthday Party: The Decor

I’m back, and, fortunately, have officially survived pulling off Samantha and Amelia’s “Baby Love” first birthday party! The pink and gold infused party was on Saturday and I couldn’t be more happy (and more sad) that it’s over! The party was months in planning, but that last week was where all of the details came together, meaning some pretty late nights for me and my slaves family who came a few days in advance to help out.

There was absolutely no down time at all last week as I had everyone working on some task or another every second of the day, whether that meant watching the twins so that I could get some baking done, wrapping thirty chocolate heart lollipops in cellophane, running to the grocery store, or cutting out a bazillion hearts out of scrapbook paper. The party seriously wouldn’t have been half-finished if it weren’t for my family, and even though it wasn’t much a vacation for them, I was glad they were here!

That being said, I had so much fun planning and putting together the party, that I’m also sad it’s over, even though it was stressful as it got down to the wire. At least I will have some great photos taken by Aunt Sarah to look back on. That, and my “Twins’ 1st Birthday” Pinterest board I’ve been pinning to for the past six months, will keep me reminiscing for some time to come.

Since I have so many pictures from the big event, I’m dividing up the posts so that the Internet doesn’t explode. Part one is the party decor…enjoy!

The invite (private information redacted, obviously):

I ordered the invites off of MyExpression’s Etsy Shop and printed them off at Staples on cardstock. The back of the invite:

The party was held at Great Uncle Steve and Great Auntie Lynn’s house, which was the perfect location for their party, with plenty of indoor and outdoor space. We were so grateful that they let us take over their house for four days…literally…four days! Jake and I arrived late on Wednesday to completely revamp their entire house with all things pink, gold, glitter, hearts, and Samantha and Amelia.

Unfortunately, by Thursday, almost every pom pom and banner we had set up had fallen down since, not wanting to make a million tack holes in their walls, we had originally used tape to hang everything up. In the end, we used tacks anyway, and everything stayed up this time.

By Friday, all of the wall decor was up and it was time to get started on the table decor. I also had my dad and brother making final runs to the grocery store and hauling vases, picture frames and food from my house to Aunt Lynn’s.

Saturday morning, the family was over at the house bright and early (except for Jake and my mom, who were assigned the most important task…making sure Samantha and Amelia went down for their nap on time so that they would be up and rested when the party started). My dad was assigned to pick up the balloons, ice and sandwiches, while the rest of us set up the outside decor, finalized the buffet and dessert tables and made some of the food that had to be done at the last minute.

By 11 a.m., the first guests arrived and everything was ready to go!

My goal when guests walked in was that the “Baby Love” theme and colors of pink and gold would hit them in the face. I hope I succeeded!

The grand entrance. I printed the “Happy Birthday Samantha and Amelia” banner on cardstock using a template from the Etsy shop, Inklings Paperie. My mom and I made the tassel garland with tissue paper using a Pinterest tutorial (finally– something I found on Pinterest that actually worked!). I bought almost all the decor that I didn’t make myself (pom poms, table runners, candle votives, etc.) online at Koyal Wholesale, which had some great prices on party supplies. The tablecloths, plates and napkins were from BirthdayExpress.com, another site with good deals.

I re-used the silver dollar store frames left over from my Dad’s 60th birthday party and had Jake spray paint them with sparkly gold spray paint. I made the welcome sign (and all the other signs) using Photoshop and printed them out at Costco.
The sign-in table.
Samantha and Amelia each had their own guest book so that they will each be able to have a little keepsake from their party when they get older. I made the guest books with Shutterfly and used pictures from their 1st birthday photo shoot inside.
The time capsule was also a part of the sign-in table. Guests were asked to write what they think Samantha and Amelia will be when they grow up on the cardstock hearts and then put them in the adorable heart boxes I found at Target. The time capsule will be opened on Samantha’s and Amelia’s high school graduation in 2031 for some fun laughs!
We got some pretty creative responses:
“When you grow up, both of you will run the largest healthcare insurance company…on the moon!” -Cousin Ben
“Amelia–PhD from Yale/Harvard in theoretical physics; leave the field to take up trucking. Never look back.” -Uncle Mike
“Samantha–First female president of Somalia. Chooses a life on the high seas as a pirate, instead.” -Uncle Mike
“Since you were six days old, there has only been one career option for your future: Duo DJs., Sammy D. and Amy J. Consider the fact that your parents didn’t enroll you in Baby DJ School a fail.” -Aunt Sarah
I ordered these first birthday chalkboard prints from the Etsy shop, KatesKanvas and then printed them at Costco as 16×20 prints. My dad then mounted them on black foam board and Jake hung them up with ribbon. I loved these because they listed some fun facts about each girls, including height and weight, favorite foods and things they like to do. They are now hanging up in the nursery and are so cute to look at.
What once held pictures of my aunt’s family was completely replaced with twins, twins and more twins!
I bought the paper mache number 1 at Hobby Lobby. My mom coated it with Mod Podge and then poured glitter all over it.
I ordered some pink Jelly Bellies and pink M & Ms from Amazon and placed them in candy dishes around the house.  I also placed some of the Shutterfly books I’ve made for the girls around on the coffee tables. What’s sad is that just one of those 120 page books only encompasses 1 or 2 months of the twins’ lives!
I had several dollar store clear vases left over from my Dad’s 60th party, so I took off the burlap flowers I had on them originally and hot glued some sparkly gold sequin ribbon from Joann’s, plus a giant, golden sunflower from Hobby Lobby, and voila! Transformed!
I used the Cricut (and had various family members help) to cut out the hearts for all the heart garlands. We must have cut out hundreds of hearts! I ordered the paper mache letters from Hobby Lobby and my mom used some gold chevron wrapping paper I found at Target to Mod Podge on the letters.
The buffet table. I bought several yards of gold fabric at Joann’s to create the tablecloth overlay.
Decorations on the buffet table.
The dessert table.
I already had these white square and rectangular vases and decorated them with gold sequin ribbon and giant sunflowers for the table centerpieces.
Out of everything, the monthly photo garland was the most time-consuming…it took forever to choose just one picture from each month! One garland had newborn-12 month photos of Samantha, one garland with Amelia and one garland with them both. I created the little monthly circles in Photoshop and attached them to some gold ribbon with clothespins that Jake spray painted for me with gold glitter spray paint. I then mod podged glitter all over the paper mache “ONE” letters that you see in the background.

The garlands were also the most time-consuming to set up…it took just the right amount and angle of tape to keep them from falling down. So annoying, but worth it!

“Double the Baby Love” banner.

Outside decor: “THE BIG ONE” pennant banner made with my Cricut.

Outside table centerpieces.

I loved the sparkly-ness of the gold sequin ribbon!

We attached some pink polka dotted seamless paper from the deck so it hung down for a photo backdrop. I found some wood photo props, like glasses and mustaches, at Michael’s, which my mom then painted in a whimsical manner!

For the kiddies, I had a t-shirt-making station. I placed a bunch of plain, pink shirts in Samantha and Amelia’s size out, along with fabric markers, fabric paint and iron-on appliques for the kids to decorate the shirts with. This kept the kids busy for a long time!

I also had some more unpainted photo props at the kids’ craft station for the kids to paint.
The smash cake stations! I hand tied the pink ombre tutus using baby headbands and three different shades of tulle, with the idea of having these be their birthday tutus. However, it ended up being pretty hot that day, so I decided to only have them wear the tutus for pictures instead of at their actual party.
I made the little “A” and “S” hearts using my Cricut and bought the high chair tutus at Hobby Lobby, although they would have been pretty easy to make.

For the party favors, I gave out pink chocolate heart lollipops with white and gold drizzle. Originally, I wanted to make and decorate sugar cookies as the party favors, but after multiple attempts at getting the cookies to retain their heart shapes in the oven, I gave up…too many of them came out looking like blobs, instead of hearts. So, on to plan B, which my mom suggested. Jake and I made the hearts by pouring melted pink chocolates into a heart-shaped lollipop mold and popping it into the refrigerator to set. The only problem was that I had just one mold and each mold only made six, so it was a total pain to make these! Next time, I will definitely get more than one mold. My mom then wrapped the chocolate lollipops with cellophane and tied with ribbon.

Last, but not least, we had TONS of balloons…pink balloons, gold balloons, heart balloons, and giant “one” -shaped balloons. I bought most of the balloons online off bargainballoons.com, which was way cheaper than buying them from the party store. A special thanks to Uncle Mike who was tasked with un-bunching and then re-bunching all 26 of them, since the high-school-aged employees at Party City are notoriously incapable of following directions. No offense if you work at Party City…I can only disparage them because in high school, I worked somewhere similar (Party Land), and I know for a fact that putting together a balloon order correctly is NOT that difficult!

A few days later and I am STILL finding flecks of gold glitter all over my house. After taking down everything from Aunt Lynn’s, I couldn’t bear to see all of the decor put in storage right away, so almost everything is now hanging up at our house, much to Jake’s chagrin. I just can’t get enough of hearts, pink and gold, I guess.

More on the rest of the party details tomorrow!

Lots of love,
