Thanksgiving 2018: Maui

On Thanksgiving Day, we left at the break of dawn for LAX, and after lugging four carseats, a stroller and all our gear through the airport, we exhaled as we took off on our 8:30 a.m. flight to Maui. We felt like we had conquered the world making our flight with everyone in one piece!

We took up two rows, with Jake sitting by Meredith and Samantha and Amelia and I across the aisle. We took turns tossing Baby Eleanor back and forth, which I’m sure the lady on the end of the row didn’t appreciate, but didn’t say anything.

A very peaceful flight! Amelia and Samantha were great and played games, watched movies and colored the entire flight. Meredith started getting antsy toward the end, but was overall better than expected during the nearly six hour flight. Eleanor had her moments of crying, mostly from being overtired and unable to nap on her normal schedule. Fortunately, we were on a party plane with tons of little kids, so her noise just blended in to the rest of the chaos.

The worst was Eleanor having two blowouts on the plane. Good thing I packed several back-up outfits for her. It’s already tough for Jake to fit in the tiny airplane bathroom himself, let alone to change a baby, but somehow, he did it! Sick of being stuck in their seats by the end…

We were so happy to be off the plane! The heat and humidity hit us with a blast as soon as we stepped off the plane and waited for our bags. All that pent-up energy and hunger finally took its toll and we endured lots of tears and tantrums grabbing our bags and car seats. It felt like an impossible task herding all the kids, bags, four car seats and baby gear through the airport to grab our car, but somehow we made it.

We rented our car through Turo, which is supposed to eliminate the hassle of going to the car rental place and waiting forever since our guy was supposed to pick us up directly outside the terminal. There was some kind of mix up, and we ended up having to lug kids and gear and all through a construction area of the parking lot, waiting for what seemed like forever (fifteen minutes in reality) for the guy to find us. No one was in a good mood when we finally got the car straightened out and I kept thinking how ironic this was that we were all cranky in paradise!

After playing tetris trying to fit all the car seats and bags in the SUV, and dealing with screaming kids, we were about ready to call it a day and go home! In hindsight, we should have just rented car seats from the car rental guy, but I’m always wary of using other people’s car seats and how dirty they are/wondering if they’ve ever been in an accident. Jake was cursing me the entire trip for insisting we lug our own! It certainly would have made the airport 90% more doable.

With a fresh change of clothes, hydrated and fed, and finally on the road, everyone calmed down and enjoyed the lush, green scenery and smell of tropical flowers as we drove to West Maui.

After unloading at the condo, we were still on California time and starving, so we walked to Kaanapali Beach for an early dinner at Hula Grill.

I was worried the kids would be too cranky from our long day to handle dinner out, but they did great! Everyone, but Eleanor, that is. Two second after we sat down, Eleanor had the pooplosion of all pooplosions on Jake! And this was AFTER pooping twice on the plane!  It oozed out of her diaper, all over her clothes and Jake’s clothes, and onto the chair! Wipes would not suffice to clean up the epic mess, so Jake left the restaurant with her while I tracked down a waiter who mopped up the mess with nice white cloth napkins! They were so gracious about it and even though the restaurant was full of old people curiously observing our family, no one said a word, although I’m sure they were horrified for us as poor Jake walked out with poop all over himself! NOT how we imagined spending Thanksgiving dinner.

Jake was back 30 minutes later. He had to go into one of the shops to buy a new change of clothes for himself after he changed Eleanor.

Happy Thanksgiving 2018! We were sad to miss our annual Friendsgiving with the Erpeldings this year!

After our Thanksgiving turkey dinner, we walked along Kaanapali beach and basked in the warm sunset.

Practicing their hula moves.

We forgive you, Eleanor, for pooping all over the place!

Eleanor didn’t seem to care that we in Maui and wanted to be home in bed, stat!

Enjoying the Maui sunset.

On our way back to the condo, we stopped in the little shops and enjoyed the live music. It was a very festive Thanksgiving!

The next day, the girls and Jake made pancakes at their new favorite breakfast place– Slappy Cakes. They had their own griddle and made their own pancakes with their own toppings– the girls’ dream restaurant! They wanted to go there for all of our meals.

The rest of the morning, we hung out at the condo because my breast pump broke! Jake drove a round-trip 2 hours to the island’s only Target to buy me a new one… on Black Friday! Total nightmare situation. Meanwhile, back at the condo, I tried to keep all four girls occupied– we played tennis, walked around, fed the koi fish, went to the beach, and tried unsuccessfully to nap in the condo. Despite the condo being two levels, so that we could split up the girls into separate rooms, the twins were just too wired to calm down enough and the noise kept Meredith up. Needless to say, everyone went to bed early that night and I was at the end of my rope by the time Jake returned from braving the crowds at Target, victorious, with my pump!

Playing tennis until we got kicked out for not wearing tennis shoes.

I picked this particular Air BnB because of all the kids’ stuff they had– everything imaginable! Rock n plays, strollers, pack n plays, baby toys, baby jumpers, bouncers, sand toys, snorkel gear, toys, crafts, movies, board games and snacks. The girls loved it! The kids stuff was great, but the condo was a little smaller than I had anticipated and the air conditioner was set so that you had to turn it back on every three hours… Eleanor woke up every time I got up to turn on the air conditioning at night and was not a happy baby!

Eleanor enjoyed sweet potatoes on her lanai.

We go the beach all the time back home, but our water is a lot colder than the warm Maui water. The girls had a blast body surfing.

It was a little windy, but that didn’t stop the girls from playing at the beach all afternoon.

Thanksgiving Potluck 2018

The twins’ last Thanksgiving potluck was so sweet! I brought Meredith along with me and split my time between both Samantha and Amelia’s rooms since I’m the Room Mom for both. Fortunately, we had lots of moms sign up to help serve the food this time, so it was one of the more relaxed potlucks!

Heating up the dishes parents dropped off, making sure every class had the right dishes and serving it up to dozens of little preschoolers asking for more rolls every five seconds was energy-draining. I don’t know how the preschool/kinder teachers do it all day!

Saying hello to Samantha’s class:

Meredith was so excited to have a place of honor at the head of the table with Samantha. Look at those pilgrim hats! Toward the end, Meredith was starting to get annoying, with the poor kid next to her complaining that she was touching his leg and stealing his food, so I had to threaten her with sitting outside the class. She was the most stressful part of the potluck!

After all the moms had sampled the food, we cleaned up and I headed out early with the girls. We hosted Great Grandpa for a pre-Thanksgiving dinner since we were out of town on actual Thanksgiving, so the girls definitely got their fill of Thanksgiving food that day!

Stuffed, we headed out on our Maui adventure the next morning!

Thanksgiving 2 in Yucca and Palm Springs

The day after Thanksgiving, we had planned to drive a few hours to Great Aunt Linda and Uncle David’s house in Yucca Valley and spend some time with them and Grammy, Grandpa and Aunt Sarah, who drove out from Utah, and Uncle Mike and Ali who drove out from Wyoming. The whirlwind of the week of Thanksgiving, however, had finally caught up with me, and I woke up feeling exhausted and like a cold was coming on. That, coupled, with feeling nauseous and dizzy from morning sickness (all-day sickness, really), was enough to keep me in bed and sadly, unable to travel.

Jake was still up for taking all three girls, however, so after summoning up the energy to get them all packed, I bid farewell as they took off on their journey through the desert. While I wish I could have come to hang out with everyone for Thanksgiving weekend, a nice, restful three-day staycation at home was just what the doctor ordered!

Meanwhile, in the desert, the girls were having a blast on their extended Daddy-Daughter date (minus the not-so-fun extra few hours in the car both ways due to traffic over the holiday). Jake and the girls stayed at a Marriott condo in Palm Desert, and met up with our family at Great Aunt Linda and Uncle David’s house upon arrival for a second Thanksgiving feast. The next morning, they met up with everyone at the Living Desert Zoo in Palm Springs.

Getting the text updates at home made me miss everyone! They had so much fun riding camels and playing at the zoo that I don’t think they missed me!

Camel ride for two.

No camel ride for Meredith, so she had to settle for a ride on Daddy’s shoulders.

Silly Great Uncle David!

Posing for this picture is SO lame, Daddy.

Cheery Meredith is always up for saying a big “CHEESE!”

The adults try to catch up with Meredith.

Meredith was so excited to hold the birdies… until one bit her.

Hey, did that thing bite me?

Ouch! Whenever Meredith sees birds, she STILL talks about the “Bad birdie ouchie.”

NOT funny, Grammy!

The twins, fortunately, had a bite-free experience.

Feed the birds. Tuppence a bag.

Amelia the bird lady.

Sammy calls for one more bird.

Pizza time.

Taking a rest back at the condo after a busy day.

A pretty view, minus Jake’s monster feet.

Back in Yucca, the girls loved visiting the park by Great Aunt Linda and Uncle David’s house.

Riding the stagecoach.

Meredith got a little too dizzy spinning with Uncle Mike.

Before leaving back home, everyone met up for breakfast in town.

As a parting gift, Aunt Linda and Uncle David gave the girls a bunch of old hats from Uncle David’s mom’s house… perfect for dress up!

Jake and the girls had to take several rest stops on the way home because the holiday weekend traffic was so bad. Very glad I was not in the car with them!

When Jake and girls collapsed through the door, they looked like bedraggled travelers who had just completed a pilgrimage through the desert for months! They had a fun time, but the car ride and exhaustion from all the excitement had definitely taken its toll, especially on Jake!

Back at home, while I had spent a relaxing weekend resting and trying to curb my morning sickness, I had also torn the house apart all weekend looking everywhere, including the trash, for my wedding ring, which I had taken off while preparing Thanksgiving dinner and thought for sure it must have been accidentally thrown away! I was near hysterical when Jake and the girls returned, but fortunately, Jake found it behind one of our dressers without too much effort. I swear I had already looked there, but I blamed it on the pregnancy brain!

I missed everyone, but the girls loved their adventurous Thanksgiving and seeing our family. A big thanks to Great Aunt Linda and Uncle David for hosting, the rest of our family for helping with the girls in my absence, and Jake for letting me stay home in bed!

Thanksgiving 2017

Our third annual Friendsgiving with the Erpelding family was hosted at our house this year! Our two families were joined by Great Grandpa, Sheela’s mom, who was visiting from Richmond, VA and Sheela’s best friend from Richmond but who now lives in Japan with her family came into town last minute to spend time with Sheela, so we had them over too! With 20 of us, it was a full house! The older kids were awesome helping with the little ones and we split who was responsible for which dish, so with all that team effort, it was a relatively easy-going Thanksgiving!

Ready to go before the feast begins.

We brined the turkey in a huge bucket of salt water and spices two days before, patted it dry and let is sit overnight in the fridge and then roasted it for a few hours on Thanksgiving. The result was a juicy, tender and crispy on the outside turkey that everyone gobbled up.

Our friend, Michael, has a wet stone for knife sharpening and graciously agreed to sharpen all of our knives prior to Thanksgiving. Our super sharp knives felt like brand-new!

The Erpeldings brought a delicious honey-baked ham, yummy green bean casserole, yummy marshmallow sweet potato casserole, their traditionaly yummy sauerkraut, and yummy pumpkin and pecan pies. We contributed the turkey, rolls, pecan-crusted sweet potato casserole, garlic mashed potatoes, regular mashed potatoes, cornbread stuffing, cranberry sauce, mini pumpkin pie desserts for the kids and homemade apple pie from the girls’ school’s fundraiser. We all had leftovers for days! Everything was homemade, but if I had to do it over again, I would definitely outsource the rolls… no matter how many times I try them, I am not a good bread/roll maker! We were in luck that the weather was unusually warm this Thanksgiving and was 85 degrees in the afternoon! The kids worked on crafts before dinner and because they seemed content playing outside, the adults went ahead and started eating first, inside.

Halfway through our dinner, the kids all decided they were hungry, so we took a little break to dish everyone up and let them loose outside where they feasted at their kids’ tables. Meredith sat inside on Sheela’s lap and ate, along with Ulala’s adorable baby, Emi, in the high chair.

Samantha and Owen dine together.

Lily put together a fun montage of photos she took, which was great since I was so busy hosting that I didn’t get any pictures! The Musicaly app she uses has a time limit, so you have to pause to look at all the pictures closely!

After dinner, the kids partied in the hot tub and pool. I’m sure our neighbors were wondering what kind of raucous Thanksgiving we were having!

I was in the kitchen getting out the desserts, when all of a sudden, I heard a loud chorus of “Pie! Pie! Pie!” coming from outside. Apparently, the kids were out of the pool and ready for dessert!

Great Grandpa and Meredith with their tummies full!

Our biggest ever Friendsgiving was a huge success thanks to everyone’s team work. We’re thankful to have such great family and friends! Happy Thanksgiving!
