5 Things We’re Loving Right Now

  1.  Dinners at the park.

Can’t beat leaving the mess there and built-in entertainment. We’ve been having picnic lunch or dinners weekly, either by ourselves or with friends, and I’m sure the girls would be okay with eating at the park every night if they had their way.

Playing crack the egg with the Erpeldings, who hosted taco night at the park.

Amelia, Grace and Samantha love to hang out together at the Coto park and play duck, duck goose. The girls’ version is a loose interpretation in which whoever is tagged as the “goose” runs around the entire park a few times before sitting down. Sometimes, both twins will get up and run around, even if only one twin is tagged. All rules are thrown out the window!

The girls climbed up the rock to get away from the “baby monster.”

More park fun: pushing Allie on the swings at Sendero.

2. Being Helper of the Day

The Helper of the Day at preschool is in charge of preparing the snack that day (i.e. MOM does it all) , raising the flag, selecting who gets to be dismissed for snack and playtime first, feeding the goldfish and birds, AND gets to sit next to the teacher during preschool. Obviously, this is a huge deal, and Samantha and Amelia ask me every preschool day if one of them is the helper that day, at which point they don’t just take my word for it, but have to look on my phone calendar to verify.

I also have to prepare for a massive meltdown in the morning for whoever is NOT the Helper of the Day. Amelia is assigned to be the helper at preschool about twice a month since she has less kids in her class, while Samantha is the helper every three weeks or so. We are 3/4 into the year, and neither of them have learned to tame their jealousy when it comes to the other twin being the helper. Samantha is the helper at the end of this week, and I’m already trying to think of ways to break the news gently to Amelia.

3. Tricks

Samantha and Amelia are constantly being jokers around the house, stuffing used food wrappers in our shoes, unrolling toilet paper, and hiding little toys in my makeup drawer. On April Fool’s, it was my turn for revenge!

I told the girls there were some brownies in the oven and asked if they could help me get them out. Brownies for breakfast!

They were confused when they found Brown E’s in the pan, and just kind of looked at me like, “What kind of person would do this???”

Still not really getting it…

Unperturbed, they were even more excited to find lollipops on their plates.

Broccoli lollipops, that is.

In a strategic bid to act like my tricks didn’t faze them, they actually ate the broccoli!

4. Tumblebees

This should actually be a favorite thing for Samantha, more than Amelia. The girls moved up to the Tumblebee Squad a few months ago and now get to be on a team, learning new moves on the high bars and balance beam in the big gym. Amelia has a hard time transitioning from place to place or activity to activity, and is often shy about entering class, but Samantha usually grabs her hand and leads her in. There’s been a few times where Samantha has completed class solo while Amelia sat out on the bench with me and Meredith, but Samantha has really shined, even without her sis in class.

5. Science Experiments

Many afternoons after naps, we’ve been busy exploring, investigating, experimenting and thinking up any excuse to put on lab goggles. Amelia’s favorite activity is coloring a tray of vinegar with food coloring and using a dropper to squirt the colored vinegar into a pan of baking soda and watching it bubble, foam, and create a rainbow.

Amelia is obsessed with bones and the human body. She’s always asking where things are in the body and what they do, followed by about a million BUT WHY’s????

The girls used a chisel and hammer to score the circumference of a geode and then crack it open to find beautiful crystals inside. This was one of their favorite activities of all time!

When no one was looking, Meredith absconded with the geodes. She wanted to be a part of the action too!

6. Honorable mention: I don’t have a picture for this one, but I had to add on another favorite thing– Moana. As the twins’ movie of choice for our weekly Family Movie Night for the past four weeks, Moana has officially surpassed Frozen as their favorite (angels SING!). They are constantly belting out “No one knoooooooooows; how far it gooooooooes!” and enjoy pretending to be that creepy, shiny crab. I was excited to watch their new favorite movie the first few weeks, but now it’s starting to get old, with no end in sight!

7. I just thought of another runner-up: the Frog and Toad book series. I don’t even know how many times I’ve had to explain which one is Frog and which one is Toad, even though the girls ask to read one of the series at least twice a day. The girls especially love the tale of “Cookies” and “Dragons and Giants,” and usually request a dramatic retelling of those stories at bedtime, in which they are the main characters.

There are so many other favorite things coming to mind, but I will have to save them for another post! Four is fun!

S and A Learn to Ride Big Girl Pedal Bikes

The twins received some Strider balance bikes from Grandpa for their 2nd birthday, and while they preferred their scooters for the first little while, they gradually got better and better at balancing and after their third birthday, were zooming around like balance bike pros.

We were about to see if the whole balance bike theory of teaching kids to balance first, before putting them on a bike and skipping training wheels was going to pay off. For their fourth birthdays, the girls asked for “big girl pedal bikes.” I put Jake on the job and he picked out an ultra-light aluminum, 13 pound, USA Woom 3 bike online and the girls picked out their colors– Samantha chose purple and Amelia chose red. I don’t know who was more excited when they arrived– Jake or the girls. He wanted to come home from Disneyland when they arrived, just to try them out, but we waited until we had some time to go on a proper outing with them.

On our first spin with the bikes, the girls did surprisingly well and could pedal for about ten seconds before veering off or putting their feet on the ground. We definitely had a few crashes, but the girls brushed themselves off and didn’t seem too afraid of getting back on the horse. Amelia was a little more apprehensive about falling and wanted Daddy right there beside here, but Samantha was full speed ahead.

On our second outing with the bikes, we went to the Orange County Great Park where the paths are a lot wider, since the girls were having trouble steering on narrow paths. The girls made vast improvements and could bike for 30 seconds plus!

No training wheels for Samantha!

Amelia made vast strides in her confidence and biking prowess.

Look at me!

After a successful bike ride, Jake treated the girls to a hot air balloon ride while Meredith tried on their helmets and ran around the park.

Back at home, the girls love to practice on their bikes and let Meredith in on the fun. Meredith is jealous she has to put up with her tricycle for the foreseeable future, but she may just be learning on one of the girls’ old balance bikes soon!

We are envisioning some awesome family bike rides this summer (I guess I need to hurry up and get myself a bike now!) We’re so proud of you, girls! Way to go!

Beaching and Jeeping

While Grammy and Grandpa were in town for the twins’ birthdays and Disneyland, we had two Open Houses at our house and needed to be out for several hours. It was so much easier cleaning and getting everyone out with the extra help, especially after being used to doing it all myself whenever we had showings during the week. Sometimes, I’ve had to have the place passably clean and the kids out with only an hour’s notice, and have been so stressed out!

One weekend during our Open House, we spent the afternoon at Dana Point and the Ocean Institute, where the girls touched starfish and other sea creatures, toured a pirate ship and learned all about whales, while Meredith ran around the park and ate. And ate. And ate.

On her third course for lunch.

Ready to start paddleboarding.

The weekend after Disneyland during another Open House, we had a picnic and beach afternoon at Marina Park in Newport Beach. I’ve been wanting to check out this park/beach for a while now, but Newport is about 30 minutes away for us, as opposed to Dana Point, Laguna and some of the other beaches that are much closer for us. It was definitely worth the extra drive, with a wide, spacious green space, awesome nautical themed playground, and a beach right on the playground that was so perfect for little kids. The beach had no waves and calm water, just like Baby Beach in Dana Point, only this one was much cleaner! We will be back!

Meredith’s first time walking into the ocean herself!

She immediately plopped down and got soaked. I could barely stand getting my feet wet– so cold!

Like a moth to the flame, Meredith was drawn to a bouncy house someone had set up.

Coppertone baby beach bum!

The twins are playground connoisseurs and gave this one two big thumbs up.

Before Grammy and Grandpa left back to Utah, the twins spent the morning racing cars on the amazing Magic Trax race car set from Grammy and Grandpa and showing off their driving skills.

Safari with Meredith.

Waving to her adoring public.

It was a rough week adjusting back to our routine after a week and a half of non-stop birthday celebrations, beach adventures, Disneyland and having Grammy and Grandpa around to help out and join in the fun. The week after, everyone was sick, cranky, sleep-deprived, off-schedule, and complaining about preschool being “boring.” With all the excitement, I fear we’ve created thrill junkies and are going to have to get them used to normal life again!

Three Lucky Leprechauns

One lucky leprechaun had the tot lot to herself on Saint Paddy’s Day!

These two leprechauns are officially obsessed with all holidays. They constantly ask me to recite the order of all the major holidays we’ve celebrated so far, so that they can calculate how long it will be until Halloween and Christmas. It’s an eternity in four-year-old time.

They had been making leprechaun and clover crafts in school on month, so they knew Saint Patrick’s Day was coming and had assumed because it was a holiday, there would be candy, cake and maybe presents. Sorry, girls!

We brought green leprechaun muffins to school (made out of spinach, and the kids wolfed them down when the teachers told them they were special leprechaun muffins… marketing at its finest!). Their classes also made fruit loop necklaces and played games with golden chocolate coins, so the girls thought it was all acceptably festive as far as minor holidays go.

I had volunteered at their preschool earlier that month helping Miss Becky’s class out with some leprechaun crafts. Amelia and Mila took their sweet time painting the leprechaun’s beard.

Pot of gold craft.

No pinches for these girls.

Great Auntie Lynn treated us to a belated birthday dinner for the girls, who were ecstatic about continuing their birthday celebrations a week later!

Holding this wiggle monster is an ordeal.

We were still recovering from our Disneyland adventure and hadn’t done the girls’ hair in two days– their Elsa and Ariel hair dos from the Anna and Elsa Boutique were still passably intact, so we kept that going for as long as possible!

Happy birthday (again)!

Meredith is such a little copy cat and tries to mimic whatever she sees the girls doing. She grabbed one of their toothbrushes and just started brushing her teeth one day, and has done so every night since. She never wants to feel left out and takes matters into her own hands.

Lots of love,
