“Happiest” Place on Earth Day 3: Princess Makeover, Pure Exhaustion and Swimming

After a jam-packed Disneyland and CA Adventure Day 1 and Day 2, we woke up before dawn again for our final day at Disneyland. Since our extra magic hours for staying at the Dland hotel could only be used on Tuesdays and Thursdays for Disneyland and Wednesday for CA Adventure, we went to Disneyland for our final day, even though there was a lot more we wished we had time to explore at CA Adventure.

Grammy and Grandpa had Meredith at home for the day so that we could have a day alone with just the birthday girls. It was adorable watching Meredith interact with the characters and shriek in delight on the rides, but it was also way more exhausting with her there, between naps, keeping her busy on rides she couldn’t go on, keeping her from picking up and eating people’s half-eaten corn dogs and forcing her into her stroller with her screaming that she wanted OUT! We missed her on our final day, but it was nice to spend some one-on-one time with Samantha and Amelia, while Meredith had a relaxing time at home and was none the wiser.

We took advantage of our last Extra Magic Hour and made it to the gates by 6:30 a.m. with all the other crazies.

Dawn at Disneyland!

Just waking up… so exhausted!

When you get there at opening, the cast members line Main Street to give everyone high fives.

Being there in the early morning totally paid off; I can say that since I’m a morning person, but I can’t speak for our poor, exhausted twins and Jake, whose ideal trip would have consisted of sleeping in, going on whatever rides were the shortest with no plan and in no particular order, and lounging around the hotel pool. From my point of view, we had a great time with no waiting in line all morning. We opted to go back to the pool instead of hanging out at Disneyland for the entire afternoon because the twins were totally done with rides at that point, but we did hit some of the fun thrill rides while their energy was still high.

Buzz Lightyear to the rescue.

Amelia and Mommy on the Astro Orbiter.

There was something magical about zooming around Disneyland at daybreak.

While Jake and Samantha went on Star Tours again (she loved it that much), Amelia and I saved seats for them at the Plaza Inn for a character breakfast. Most of the advice I got prior to the trip said not to waste your time with a long breakfast in order to take advantage of the low lines in the early morning, but by Day 3, we didn’t really care about making it on every single ride and wanted to relax a little.

The Plaza Inn character breakfast ended up being our favorite meal of all. The breakfast buffet was delicious and the characters were more varied than what we had seen elsewhere in the park. We met Fairy Godmother, Captain Hook, Rafiki, Eeyore and other random characters, all of whom were playful, stealing hats from little kids and running around the restaurant among other pranks, and made the twins feel at ease.

I asked Amelia if she was brave enough to meet Captain Hook, and after weighing the pros and cons, she decided the bragging rights were worth it. Amelia to Sammy for the rest of the day: “I was brave and met Captain Hook! I wasn’t even scared AT ALL.”

Even though it was much easier just having the twins, we were sad Meredith wasn’t there to join us since she would have been absolutely in love with all the characters.

Rafiki was the best!

Even Jake couldn’t escape without a big monkey hug.

Outside the Plaza Inn: fed, rested and ready to take on our final day.

Our favorite ride– Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Awesome combo of classic Disney and thrills! The twins are total thrill-junkies and loved it. Sammy even put her hands in the air on the drops!

We thought we might traumatize them with Splash Mountain, but decided to take the risk since it’s all Zippidee Doo-Dah and cute creatures throughout the entire ride, until the very end when it’s too late to do anything about it! They actually laughed afterwards and weren’t traumatized, so that was a win. We wanted to go again later in the day to try and get a picture of the girls without being blocked, but there was a 2+ hour wait later, so we bagged it.

Dreams do come true.

I can’t remember ever doing the tour of Sleeping Beauty’s Castle when I was younger, but we went through with the girls and it was super cute. They loved stopping at each scene to read the pages of the book inside the castle.

We still have the “Tiki tiki tiki tiki tiki room” song playing on repeat in our heads. I thought the twins might be bored for this, but it was one of their favorite “rides.” The singing birds and tikis were right up their alley.

The Dole Whips definitely helped keep their attention too.

Tarzan’s Treehouse.

Jungle Cruise again! Same corny jokes.

Spinning teacups time.

MOM YOU’RE EMBARRASING ME.

Samantha and Amelia love to get their nails painted and dress up at home, so what better way to celebrate our last day at Disneyland than to get their very own princess makeovers at the Anna and Elsa Boutique! Okay, so this was probably more for me than them. Despite refusing to say A WORD to the stylists and acting shy the entire time, they did crack a smile when the stylists whipped around their chairs for the big reveal.

The before:

Before their makeover, the girls got to choose a color of nail polish, color of hair extension, and which princess updo they wanted. Sammy chose Elsa of course! The prices of dresses at the Disneyland and Downtown Disney gift shops are ridiculous, so we just brought our own that the girls already had from home.

Feeling pampered.

Despite this being the Elsa and ANNA boutique, Amelia predictably chose red hair color for her favorite princess, Ariel. She brought her Ariel dress at home, so I guess this was fitting, although I was hoping they would choose Elsa AND Anna just because it would be super adorable. Poor Anna. No one ever wants to be Anna!

The girls got to choose a color of eyeshadow and a little blush to boot. This was all teetering dangerously close to Toddlers and Tiaras, but hey, whatever. We just went with it. This was all way too much girly girl glam for Jake, who took the opportunity to make some calls and get work done outside.

The girls were excited to keep their nail polish and makeup compacts afterwards and last week, I caught them in their rooms trying on their makeup together. Let’s stay little, girls!

I was amazed that the stylists tamed the girls’ unruly, curly hair and whipped up such beautiful updos. I wish I had video’d everything so I could try it at home because the only hair dos I’m capable of are piggy tails.

After adding the tiara, the stylist sprinkled a little bit of “pixie dust” glitter.

On the count of three, all the stylists in the salon shouted,”Let it go!” as Amelia flipped around to see her transformation into a princess. Predictably, Amelia had a non-reaction and while she didn’t act too enthusiastic at the time, once we were outside, it was all “Look at my nails, mommy!” Look at my red hair, Sammy!” and smiles all around. I’d like to think it was worth it!

Introducing Princess Ariel.

Sammy also got a sprinkling of pixie dust glitter, a tiara and a climactic countdown to “Let it go!” before seeing herself in the mirror. Sammy was wearing her best poker face, but once we got outside the boutique, she couldn’t stop talking about her new blue hair and nails.

The beautiful Princess Elsa!

Admiring each other’s nails.

They may have been ice queens inside the Anna and Elsa boutique, but were their regular, silly selves once we got outside!

Ready to hit Disneyland again… or not. By early afternoon, the twins were understandably having complete meltdowns.

Before their dresses and princess updos were ruined by ketchup, the evil queen mommy made her princesses stop for pictures, which they fiercely protested.

Nice princess faces, girls!

The most miserable looking princesses you ever did see.

Amelia was so exhausted, she was falling asleep right then and there.

You’d think we were at the Most Boring Place on Earth or something!

At one point, Amelia flat out refused to budge from her stroller, while Sammy reluctantly posed, on the condition that she could make whatever faces she wanted.

Princess Glum Face.

THIS IS TORTURE.

After corn dogs at the Little Red Wagon cart, these poor girls were out for the count.

While they were napping, we strolled around Pixie Hollow and decided to meet Tinkerbell, since we had nothing better to do.

Unfortunately, as soon as it was our turn to meet Tink, Samantha woke up right at that instant and was so disoriented, she started bawling. It only made matters worse once she looked up to see Tinkerbell and was then angry that Amelia wasn’t awake to meet her too!

This pretty much sums up our whole trip.

Sammy adapts a little bit better than Amelia, and with an ice cream, she was ready to go.

Amelia napped away while Sammy went on a few more rides with Daddy.

Even though there were still some rides we hadn’t been on, we decided to call it a day and head to what the girls had really been waiting for–the pool.

Say goodbye to those princess updos!

Mom’s favorite girly girl experience that the kids probably didn’t care about and could have been done at home for free: Anna and Elsa Boutique

Favorite park: CA Adventure

Best troopers: Grammy and Grandpa

Twins’ favorite part: the pool

Meredith’s favorite part: the splash pad

So, basically, we could have stayed at home and gone to the park, splash pad and pool for free and the girls would have been just as happy. But then we wouldn’t have been able to experience family bonding through the exhausting, tantrum-inducing sugar and sensory-overload that is the magic of Disney!

It took about a week for everyone to get back on a normal schedule and come down to earth after all the sugar and excitement, but hearing the girls talk about their first trip to Disneyland weeks later at least reassured us they had fun memories. Even so, we are officially Disneyland’ed out for the near future!

Lots of love,

“Happiest” Place on Earth Day 2: California Adventure

After an exhausting day at Disneyland the day before, we had a tough time rousing the kids on Day 2 for California Adventure. Our Dland Hotel extra magic hour for CA Adventure was an hour later than for Disneyland, and we didn’t need to be at the gate until 7:30, but even then, all the kids were still zonked at 7:25. We plopped three half-asleep girls in their strollers and zoomed over to the park, where we dashed over to the popular Radiator Springs Racers in Cars Land. The wait later in the day was over two hours. Who would wait in line that long for ANY ride is beyond me, but apparently there are plenty of willing people out there. Again, we were grateful for the extra magic hour and took full advantage of the low wait times before the park opened and the crowds invaded.

Everyone’s favorite ride!

Meredith waited with me while everyone was on the ride– maybe next time you’ll be tall enough!

Meredith was sleeping in her stroller for our family pic.

Love Sammy’s belly poking out!

There were so many rides, playgrounds, and shows at CA Adventure that we didn’t even make it to half of what we had planned on in our original itinerary. We definitely wished we had another day there.

The rides in A Bug’s Land were adorable! The girls especially loved the bumper cars, Flik’s Flyers, and Heimlich’s Chew Chew Train.

Poor Meredith missed most of the morning action while she napped.

Daddy and Amelia.

Daddy and Samantha.

Everyone was hungry and overtired (a common refrain this trip) by the time we made it to our reservation at Ariel’s Grotto for our princess lunch.

C’mon Amelia, Ariel is your favorite princess of all time! I guess she was star struck.

Ariel’s Grotto was supposed to be another fun treat for the girls’ birthday, since they are obsessed with princesses at home, but when face-to-face in the flesh, they clammed up!

Meredith, on the other hand, was not shy about meeting her favorite princesses and I had to keep her messy little fingers away from their dresses and hair because she was continually trying to reach out to them.

We bribed the girls with dessert just so they’d stand near the princesses for pictures. At least Meredith and I had fun meeting them!

The twins eventually agreed to go up to the princesses, as long as they went together. Samantha would say, “C’mon Amelia, be brave with me!”

Would you like a snap pea, Belle?

Meredith enjoyed making a spaghetti masterpiece on the floor while watching the princesses.

Pigging out on the cute sea-themed desserts.

This is the KIDS’ dessert plate? Sugar overload!

No complaints from Sammy on the jello.

Meredith grabbed a handful of frosting when no one was looking.

While everyone was on the Soarin’ Over the World ride, Meredith found her new love– the splash pad! She was hilarious, chasing the water fountains and shrieking in delight when the water hit her face. We are going to have a blast at the splash pad this summer.

No swim suit on, but don’t care! I love it!

While heading back to the hotel for naps, Meredith spotted Mickey and begged to honk his nose to see how it felt compared to Minnie’s.

After naps, we saw Frozen, Live and thanks again to playing Grammy’s wheelchair access card, we had good seats without waiting in line for hours. Meredith lasted about halfway through, and Amelia was hiding in her seat through the first half hour, but we eventually coaxed her into watching. We couldn’t figure out if the live versions of her favorite characters in such close proximity, plus the noise, scared her or if she was being star struck and shy! Their favorite part was the fake snow falling down on us during the show! It was fun to see a stage adaptation of Frozen condensed into an hour with all of the great music and dancing, live. All of the adults loved it, at least and it was worth the wait.

Let it go!

The Redwood Creek Trail playground was the girls’ favorite out of all of CA Adventure and we wished we had more time there before the sun went down.

Ariel’s carousel.

The silly symphony swings!

The consensus was that we definitely needed to come back to explore more of CA Adventure! Meredith fell asleep in her stroller at bedtime again, and we all headed back to the hotel to conk out. We helped pack up Meredith’s stuff while the girls got ready for bed since she was going back to our house with Grammy and Grandpa for the night and next day so that we’d have one full day with just us and the twins at Disneyland. I’m sure Meredith woke up at home the next morning and was wondering if all the princesses, swirling rides and dancing animals had all been a dream!

Disneyland Day 1

Instead of having a big party for the twins’ birthday this year, Grammy and Grandpa came out from Utah and we all went to Disneyland and California Adventure for a few days to celebrate. Theme parks and Disney, in general, are not my thing, so I have to admit, the thought of crowds, long lines, junk food, life-size animals breaking into song, and cranky, overtired kids was not making me super excited about spending three days at the “Happiest” Place on Earth.

Growing up, Disneyland entailed a long road trip and was a very special occasion, but around here, many of our friends have annual passes and treat it like going to the park. “Playdate at Disneyland? Meet us at 3:30 for a few rides and dinner!” are the group texts I receive all the time. No big deal! I can’t imagine braving traffic, parking, lines and crowds on a regular basis, but I do understand the appeal of not feeling the pressure to make it to every single ride, show, parade and attraction.

Despite the crowds, lines, heat, junk food, cranky kids, and basically everything else I had counted on, we did have many magic moments, particularly for Meredith, who was mesmerized and delighted by the chaos and characters. Being more of an introvert and sensitive to noise, crowds and constant sensory input like myself, it was all a little overwhelming for the twins, even though they did have fun.

Case in point: at the end of our Disneyland extravaganza, the girls said their favorite part was the pool. So what you’re telling me is…. WE COULD HAVE STAYED AT HOME AND GONE TO THE POOL FOR FREE?? I’ve heard more enthusiasm from them about the beach and zoo! Hence, we will not be getting annual passes anytime soon. Still, having Grammy and Grandpa there for the girls’ first Disneyland experience and reliving our childhood memories was all worth it and, even amidst the chaos, spending such a solid chunk of time just being silly as a family was priceless!

After preschool and naps on Monday, we packed up and braved the traffic to Anaheim, with three hungry, cranky kids whining the entire 45 minute drive. It was the perfect start to our vacation…

Jake and I figured that in order to make it through the next three days of corn dogs and “It’s a Small World” playing ad naseum, we needed a nice, adult dinner out. We loaded the kids on Grammy and Grandpa and sent them to Goofy’s Kitchen for a character dinner at the Disneyland Hotel, where we were staying, while we enjoyed a peaceful kid-free and kid-food free dinner at Napa Rose over at the Grand Californian. No characters, mac and cheese or Disney songs in sight!

Meanwhile, at Goofy’s Kitchen:

Grammy and Grandpa reported that the singing and dancing characters were playful and fun with the kids.

Zipidee Doo Dah… glad we weren’t here!

I love how nonchalant the twins and Meredith were. Like, no big deal people. We see this all the time.

Meredith had the best time out of everyone and was enchanted with the life-sized, dancing animals.

The twins were too busy pigging out on gummy worms to interact with Pluto, but Meredith just HAD to see what those whiskers were all about.

Fascinated with Minnie’s nose.

EWWWWW, MEREDITH!

Such troopers for letting us have a nice evening out!

Predictably, the twins were shy with the characters, but having an enormous buffet of food and desserts in front of them helped.

Paralyzed by the choices.

This explains why everyone was a nightmare getting to bed that night!

Food coma.

Walking around the hotel while Mommy and Daddy were still at dinner.

Grammy injured her ACL a few months ago and will likely be having knee surgery soon, but fortunately, the Dland Hotel had scooters you can order ahead of time and have delivered to your room. The girls were excited to try it out!

Our first night was a total disaster trying to get everyone calmed down and ready for bed. We usually stay in a condo or somewhere with a separate bedroom for the kids, but since this was a regular hotel, we were all smushed together in the same room. We started out with S and A sharing a bed, but quickly realized that was a bad idea after they spent an hour giggling, wrestling and pinching each other, with Meredith screaming in the meantime because she couldn’t sleep with all the noise.

We moved Samantha to the couch, where she continued to tell jokes, tease Amelia and ask random questions, and eventually sent her next door to Grammy and Grandpa’s room. I am not a happy person when I don’t get sleep and was already freaking out since we were hours past bedtime and needed to be up at the crack of dawn in the morning. To top it off, our room overlooked Downtown Disney and we had to endure some very LOUD and annoying music the entire time we were trying to put the kids to bed. I was in tears thinking we were never going to sleep, and Amelia was still restless from the noise. About 9:30, Jake went down to request a new room, at which point the noise from outside stopped as the concert was over. Amelia finally conked out and Grammy reported that next-door, Sammy had stayed up chatting for a bit and then passed out. Since the kids were asleep, we decided to keep our room that night and switch in the morning, and, to their credit, the hotel gave us a discount after we complained. Still, it was a stressful first night.

If you stay at one of the Dland properties, you get an “Extra Magic Hour,” where you get in one hour before the general public. This was totally critical since we didn’t have to deal with any lines that first hour and got a ton done. On top of that, you have to get to the gates at least half an hour before the extra magic hour, or you’ll waste that extra hour going through security and waiting in line to even get into the park.

We literally woke up, threw the kids in the strollers and raced out the door to make it to the gates by 6:30 a.m., along with a thousand other crazy people! While in line, we got the girls dressed, hair done, and ate breakfast, until at last, the gates opened and we scurried to Fantasyland. Definitely worth waking up for! It was magical being there in the early morning, especially compared to later in the day when it was so packed, we could barely move.

Four out of seven people in our group were in wheeled vehicles ha!

With this itinerary, we had a lot of ground to cover the first day:

First stop: Peter Pan since that has a wait of 45+ minutes later in the day. Even with the extra magic hour, there were still a lot of people in line, but fortunately, this ride had a special wheelchair access line and we got on immediately, thanks to being with my mom! Because many of the rides had special wheelchair access lines, we didn’t even need fastpasses that first day and were able to bypass hours of lines. An injured knee did have its advantages! Thanks mom!

You can fly…you can fly…you can fly…

I totally admit that as cynical as I am about Disneyland, I did tear up a bit going on this ride and thinking about how grateful I was to relive childhood memories with my own little family!

Dumbo time.

Meredith was enchanted!

A simply gorgeous spring day at Disneyland.

Our three princesses.

The girls, Grammy and Jake raced each other on Autopia.

Meredith napped in the stroller while the twins explored Toon Town. Next to Nemo’s Submarine Voyage (SO boring, but totally the girls’ speed!), climbing around Chip n Dale’s treehouse and exploring all the silly cars and shops in Toon Town was the twin’s favorite part of the morning.

Since they were celebrating their birthday, they received special birthday buttons and cast members gave them a special birthday greeting wherever we went.

Snack time before Small World. I got the girls cheap autograph books and sharpies before our trip because I thought they would be less shy about going up to the characters. The girls got autographs from characters at Goofy’s Kitchen, but didn’t really understand the point, so thereafter, their autograph books because the perfect little coloring books while we were waiting in lines or strolling around. Grammy also found these cute SafetyTat identification tattoos to give us a little peace of mind in case we got separated, which turned out not to be a problem since the girls stuck to us like glue.

Sammy LOVED small world and knows the entire song, because one of her teachers at preschool always plays it on the guitar and sings.

Some of the Dland blogs suggested getting a balloon to tie to your stroller so that you can always find it in the crowd or when you park it during a ride, but after following this advice, I have to say it was more annoying than useful! It kept hitting trees and people as we were walking around and just created more hassle when the girls wanted to hold theirs. They deflated after the first day, but Dland will give you new ones for free, which at $9 a pop, they better!

Even though bedtime had been rough, nap time was surprisingly easy! Meredith took her morning nap in the stroller and by 1 p.m., we all headed back to the hotel where I put the twins down (as long as they weren’t in the same bed, they fell asleep quickly), while Grammy and Grandpa walked Meredith around. Then, as soon as the twins had conked out, we brought Meredith in to sleep in the pack n play. We had switched rooms to a much quieter room, but it wasn’t ready yet, so Grammy and Grandpa hung out by the pool with some refreshing Dole Whips, while the girls used their room to nap.

After naps, we hit the park again in the late afternoon. Meredith was instantly drawn to Cinderella!

Getting around the park in Grammy’s scooter was a lot more entertaining than the stroller.

In line for the Jungle Cruise, still as cheesy as ever.

While Jake and the girls were on the Jungle Cruise, we went to grab a table at River Belle Terrace.

A mac n cheese disaster for the ages!

Meredith’s favorite part was watching the ducks. Again, we could have stayed at home for free!

By nightfall, all three were beyond exhausted, but we stopped for one more ride on King Arthur’s Carousel. We found a last minute spot to watch the Main Street Electrical Parade, in all of its catchy music and 1970s technological glory. Meredith fell asleep in her stroller, while the twins watched, half-asleep, from atop our shoulders.  I will now need permanent chiropractic work.

Meredith stayed asleep transferring her inside the hotel, and thankfully, the twins went down quicker than the night before, still with a good amount of giggling and “SHE PULLED MY HAIR!!!” before finally settling done amidst our threats to take away the Mickey bubble wand and puppy stuffed animal souvenirs they bought using some of their chore money. I’m sure images of flying elephants, animal parades, princesses and churros filled their dreams that night and they all slept like rocks before getting up for another full day!

Scootering Balboa Island

It’s been a while since the girls had played with their friends, Kennedy, and Sebastian, so we met up with Lucero and kids for a spontaneous hangout at Balboa Island.

Kennedy told the girls all about her new American Girl doll, Kelly, and now they want to trade in their Bitty Babies for a big girl doll and go to the AG store in LA with Kennedy.

Meredith is normally a total nightmare in restaurants, but today she decided to people-watch contentedly while we munched on strawberry waffles at Le Pain Quotidien.

Bee helmets on and ready to scooter Balboa Island.

A playdate at Balboa is not complete without a hippo cookie from the famous Dad’s Donuts. There are so many cute shops, ice cream parlors, and bakeries on Balboa that we could have spent all day browsing, but the kids were scootering down the sidewalk faster than we could catch them.

Couldn’t leave without a chocolate banana from the Original Frozen Banana Stand. Meredith enjoyed a lick.

We promised the kids we’d go down to the beach, thinking they’d just stick their toes in the sand for a minute, but NOPE. Samantha and Amelia dove in, jeans and all! They looked miserably uncomfortable on the ride home in their wet jeans, but I didn’t hear any complaints, so they apparently didn’t mind. Meredith made several escape attempts to the ocean and was quite enraged each time I pulled her out of the water.

Constructing a sand castle with Kennedy.

Amelia has been sporting a bandaid prominently on her face for the past week and a half after Samantha burned her with the hot glue gun during an afternoon building a birdhouse with Daddy. Samantha has been very remorseful about the incident and even told her teachers during share time about what happened and how she’s tried to make it up to Amelia with extra hugs and sharing her favorite stuffed animals.

Sebastian shows off his “fish.”

The best part about getting together with this crew is how nicely all the kids play together. Even though Kennedy and Sebastian are a little bit older than the girls, they run off together like the best of friends, lost in their own little world. It’s always nice when I can chat with my own friend while the girls play happily with theirs.

Until our next adventure with the Smiths…

Lots of love,
