Random Slices of Palm Springs

Between checking out their new digs and begging to watch a show before bed, the girls are always crazy the first night we stay somewhere, which translates into everyone being groggy and cranky in the morning. Morning cartoons and snuggles with Amelia and Meredith made it better!

Meredith’s favorite part of the day is bath time. She wiggles her legs so fast, she almost propels herself through the water.

One of the perks of being a twin is you always have someone with whom to ride the teeter totter.

Samantha was upset after Jake pushed her down the waterslide without thinking– I was out of the pool with Meredith, so there was no one to catch her! Fortunately, a nice lady in the pool caught her as she plopped out the bottom, but Samantha and Amelia refused to go on the slide again after that.

Meredith was alert and fascinated most of the time we were at the pool, but became overtired easily with all the overstimulation. Naps were not a problem during our vacation.

IMG_0723

There was so much we wanted to do in Palm Springs that we didn’t get the chance to do (the tram up the mountain and the airplane museum are on our list for next time), but it was nice to escape the every day routine and get away for a few days. It was worth schlepping our millions of baby items there and back!

Living Desert Zoo

After our rock climbing adventures with Uncle David and Aunt Linda in Joshua Tree, the twins and Jake spent the day at the Living Desert Zoo in Palm Desert. Upon arriving, Jake noticed some golf carts roaming around the zoo and asked how he could get one of those to tour the park. There were no tour guides available, but, apparently, it wasn’t busy that day, because the front desk called Gail, a volunteer zoo guide, at her house to come and give Jake and the girls a tour in one of the golf carts.

Even though it was her day off, I guess she loves giving people tours because she was excited to take the girls around! Apparently, she spends her winters in Palm Springs (it was her last day in town that day) and her summers in Alaska. Must be nice! Gail doesn’t have any grandkids of her own and basically adopted the twins for a day. She took them around with Jake on the golf cart well past the amount of time she normally gives tours, took pictures for them, and was so happy when Jake texted her a few pictures from their day. Thanks for the VIP tour, Gail!

Riding in style. Jake said the look on people’s hot, sweaty and tired faces was priceless as they zoomed around and were able to cut in some of the longer lines for activities like giraffe feeding.

IMG_2609 IMG_2606

Giraffe feeding at this zoo was only $5– compared to $80+ at the San Diego Wild Animal Park (we’ve never done it there).

MUST. GET. CLOSER.

IMG_2647

At one point, Jake had taken the girls to the bathroom, when all of a sudden, he turned around just in time to see them giggling and running off with a “Caution: Wet” sign from the bathroom. He raced out the bathroom door, but they were no where to be found! The girls usually stick really close to us in public (like hanging on to our legs close) and have never run away like that, so you can imagine Jake’s shock.

Jake and Gail ran every direction for five minutes, yelling and searching everywhere for the girls, who had completely vanished. Jake said his heart was racing, but he managed to stay calm, while Gail was a complete basket case, frantically calling on her walkie talkie to have all the exits of the zoo shut down.

After a five-minute frantic search, Jake happened to hear one of the girls far off saying, “Where’s Daddy?” and finally tracked them down. Jake showed me on a zoo map where they had taken off to and I have no idea how they managed to run that far away in such a short amount of time. Just hearing about the fiasco gave me a heart attack. From now on, I guess we’ll be having discussions about not running away and what to do if they get lost.

Adventures in Joshua Tree

Whenever we plan a getaway, I usually get skeptical at the last minute, thinking it’s not really going to be much of a vacation with all the packing, driving, unpacking, keeping the girls occupied and just being out of our routine in general. I’m usually right about it not being much of a relaxing vacation with all three kids in tow, but, as Jake always argues, it’s about the memories. In the end, I’m always glad when we get away, packing, unpacking, tiredness and all.

For my birthday week, we packed everyone in the minivan and headed out a couple hours away to Palm Springs/Palm Desert. After settling into our vacation condo for a day, we took a day trip the next morning out to see Great Uncle David and Great Aunt Linda and go adventuring in Joshua Tree National Park. Although we’ve stayed at their house before, the girls have never been to Joshua Tree and after hearing about how many rocks there were to climb, they couldn’t wait to check it out. Rocks are right up their alley.

Despite not knowing what a Jeep was prior to their stay, Samantha and Amelia couldn’t stop talking about going Jeep-ing!

IMG_0565

IMG_0562

There may or may not have been dozens of buttons and gears Uncle David had to put back in place once he got in his Jeep.

IMG_2541

I stayed back at the house with Aunt Linda and Meredith, but received a full report of their adventure when everyone returned. First on the agenda was a short hike up the Barker Dam Trail, with lots of detours for rock climbing along the way. Perfect for three year olds and three year olds at heart.

IMG_0568

The girls had a blast with Great Uncle David, although after a full morning of hiking, they had major meltdowns on the hike back to the car and only Daddy would do to carry them the whole way.

IMG_2581

Uncle David and Jake had their work cut out for them chasing after the girls and spotting them on the rocks. They climbed and climbed like little mountain goats so high on the rocks that I’m glad I wasn’t there so that they didn’t have to endure my probable nagging and near heart attacks.

IMG_0660

I have great memories of watching the old-school Rocky & Bullwinkle cartoons with Uncle David and Aunt Linda; so glad the twins could continue the tradition!

So many fascinating objects in the yard, including various tikis, which, according to the girls, were “angry because someone hit them.”

IMG_0667

Even after all that hiking, Jeep-ing and lifting, Great Uncle David somehow still had the energy to entertain the girls and barbecue hamburgers. Hello reptile eyes!

IMG_0671

We were treated to a delicious barbecue feast for dinner, with Meredith eyeing our food enviously the entire time.

IMG_0670

Please give me a hamburger!

IMG_0662

It was an exciting and exhausting day for the girls who kept asking when we would be able to return, especially since we didn’t have time to make it out to the “stagecoach” park near the house. Meredith had a great time being cuddled, but hopes to be able to climb rocks with her sisters next time. We hope we didn’t tire out Uncle David and Aunt Linda too much so that we can come back soon for more adventures!

Second 29th Birthday

Last month, when the twins’ personal mentor/life coach, our friend, Marisa, came to meet Meredith, Samantha and Amelia were telling her all about how old they were (THREE…NO, TWENTY…NO, SIXTEEN!). When Marisa asked how old Mommy was, Amelia replied, “I don’t know. She won’t tell us!”

I have no idea where they got that from since I’ve never withheld my age or acted like it was a big deal in front of them. Out of the mouths of babes!

I thought Amelia’s comment was fitting in light of the fact that I was about to turn thirty–er–29 for the second time.

Jake and the girls helped celebrate such a big milestone in grand fashion, treating me to breakfast in bed, sparkler candles and my favorite decadent flourless dark chocolate cake from Susie Cakes, complete with sparkler candles, homemade cards, a spa day and most of the weekend off to do whatever I wanted in peace… best present ever! Jake and I went out for a birthday dinner date, as well as with friends over the weekend, and we even got treated to a yummy post-Passover matzoh fry breakfast at Aunty Lynn’s house. We continued birthday celebrations into the week by taking a trip out to Palm Springs (never a real vacation with kids, but fun to get away, nonetheless).

I’m not one to really care how old I’m turning, but ending my twenties definitely felt like a big deal, not because of the number necessarily, but more so due to the fact that it made me realize how quickly time is flying. By the time this decade is over, my littles won’t be so little anymore and that makes me a wee bit teary eyed.

I guess the lesson I can learn from my birthday reflections is to enjoy it while it lasts and to not sweat the small stuff (whining, insane energy levels, and epic messes all included). Here’s to turning 29 again… the age I will stay forever!
