Meredith’s 3rd Birthday at Disneyland

A few weeks after Meredith turned three, we celebrated her birthday at Disneyland, after three of the girls got over their colds they kept passing back and forth. Instead of a big party this year, Meredith chose to go to a theme park, and since she was a baby the last time we went to Disneyland, and they had a deal going for Socal Resident 3-day passes,  I kind of chose that for her, even though she kept saying she was excited to go to “Legoland.”

Last time for the twins’ birthday, we spent three consecutive days park-hopping and stayed at the Disneyland hotel, but this time with the pass, we broke it up over a few months, waking up early to drive there instead.

Once Meredith saw Mickey and Minnie, she didn’t seem to mind we weren’t at Legoland!

Last time we were at Disneyland, we were celebrating the twins’ 4th birthday!

First stop, Fantasyland for Dumbo and all our favorites.

We went on President’s Day and arrived before the park opened, so we were able to ride most of the rides in Fantasyland, and some of Adventureland and Frontierland before it got too crazy. By 11 a.m., it was so packed, I could barely navigate the stroller through the crowds! All the rides, even the little kid ones in Fantasyland were 30 minutes plus the rest of the afternoon (we sadly did not make it to It’s A Small World early enough and the line was over an hour, so we skipped that one), so we took it slow and only did those the girls most wanted to do, while breaking it up with some of the non-ride attractions, lunch and snacks, getting a Dole Whip at the Tiki Room (only Meredith wanted to go with me and LOVED the songs!), and watching a parade. We only did Star Tours in Tomorrowland, so when we go back for Day 2 of our pass, we will have to explore there.

Jake and I are totally not theme park people and were so sick of lines and crowds by the end of the day, but it’s hard not to smile and have a magical time when you see the kids’ eyes light up. The girls all had their moments of feel grumpy and tired, but overall had an awesome time. Meredith, especially, was mesmerized by all the rides, characters, music and snacks!

The girls are thrill junkies and all said their favorite ride was Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

Eleanor enjoyed a little snack while waiting.

Meredith was too little to go on this the last time we were here– she was obsessed.

Possibly the slowest, most boring “ride” at Disneyland.

Tarzan’s treehouse was a nice break from all the lines.

The corny jokes on the Jungle Cruise kind of went over the girls’ heads.

Eleanor on Main Street after a parade.

The girls waited thirty minutes in line for Storybook Boats and said it was worth it, even though I can’t imagine why!

Everyone begged to go on Star Tours and reported back that it was “a little scary” but that they wanted to do it again.

Carousel time.

Getting dizzy on the teacups.

Eleanor didn’t nap for as long as usual during the day, but was pretty good about eventually conking out at her regular nap times in the stroller, after putting up quite a fight to stay awake and see all the action.

Jake and the girls waited in line for Splash Mountain, only to be turned away because even though they were tall enough, they couldn’t seat Jake and all the girls together without another adult between them. Jake brought Meredith back to me and the twins and Jake were allowed to jump to the front of the line to ride. Meredith was upset about not riding at first, until she watched it go down a few times and saw people get soaking wet! She didn’t seem to care about not riding after that.

A little scared!

We hung out for dinner at Carnation Cafe/Little Red Wagon (corn dogs for the girls) and drove home, with time to spare for baths. Four very tired and overstimulated girls slept well that night after their exhausting day with Mickey and friends. I thought Disneyland was a good choice for Meredith until on the way back she said her favorite part was riding the huge escalator up to the parking garage and she asked when we were going to Legoland! FAIL.

Regardless, we will be back to California Adventure soon for Day 2.

Amelia Joins the Club

One night at dinner, Amelia was bragging that she was the only kid in our family (besides Eleanor, of course) that hadn’t broken a bone! Knock on wood…

I was a few minutes late to school pick-up and got there when the kids had already been released to go play on the playground (usually when I get there, they are still lining up in their classrooms). I had just arrived and had said hello to Miss Shah when we heard an ear-splitting shriek in the direction of the monkey bars. Amelia appeared, clutching her wrist and screeching like a banshee. It took her a few minutes to get out what had happened, but eventually, between sobs, she screamed that she had fallen off the monkey bars.

I tried to comfort her and get her out the door as efficiently as possible, but Samantha and Meredith were huddled around clinging to my legs, and with Eleanor wiggling in the Ergo carried, it was not easy lumbering out of there with lunchboxes, coats, and all their work from the day. After a few minutes, Amelia still hadn’t stopped sobbing, and her wrist had swollen up like crazy, so Miss Linda gave us some ice for the road and Miss Debbie helped us to the car.

I thought for sure she had just injured it, maybe sprained it and would go back to playing like normal at home once all the drama was over. But for the rest of the afternoon, she laid on the couch, miserable, with a towel and pack of frozen veggies on her wrist. I went ahead and called the orthopedist for an appointment first thing in the morning.

We gave her some tylenol and wrapped it, plus put a brace on it for the night (the same brace Samantha had when she broke her arm on the zipline two summers ago).

By the morning, Amelia was calm, but her arm was still very swollen and she couldn’t twist it, although she could move all her fingers and flex. Amelia was thrilled to go to the orthopedist with me, while Samantha had a teary, tantrum filled morning since Amelia wouldn’t be joining her at school for a few hours. Amelia and Meredith were so excited to see the x-ray machine and play with all the toys at the doctor’s office that I thought for sure Amelia must have just really injured it. She wasn’t acting like it hurt in the least.

After her x-ray, the nurse displayed in on the light screen while she went to grab Dr. Davis. You’d think I’d be an expert at reading x-rays by now, but when I looked at it, my first thought was, “Oh good! It’s not broken.”

Then Dr. Davis entered and the first thing she said was, “So, it’s broken.”

WHAAAAAAAAT? I immediately texted and Jake and his response was, “NOOOOO WAY!”

And so it was that Amelia joined the Broken Bone Club.

For the life of me, I could not see any breaks at all in the wrist. Dr. Davis pointed out to me a teeny tiny line on different views of her wrist and told me she had fractured both her right ulna and radius, but she could have been totally making the whole thing up and I would have never known! She said the breaks were consistent with landing on the ground with wrists flexed up, and wasn’t surprised when I told her she had fallen from the monkey bars. She sees this every day and didn’t seem concerned that Samantha had broken the exact same bone a few years ago.

While Dr. Davis was applying Amelia’s cast, she took one look at Meredith, who was running around the office, tripping on a bouncy ball, and said, “I can see why your kids break bones! They are pretty active!” Of course, I was freaking out that this was our third break within the year, but Dr. Davis said she wasn’t concerned because it was just a combination of them being very active, bad luck, and the fact that they are pretty tall and their bones growing so fast. They are also a little clumsy!

Amelia chose yellow for her cast and was beyond excited to show her classmates at school.

When I came back to pick her up, she was glowing with all the attention. Everyone in class and the teachers signed it!

When we got home, her enthusiasm waned when reality hit. She couldn’t play on the monkey bars or zipline at the park, or play in the sand. She had a few rough nights getting used to sleeping with it, and bathtime was a huge pain for me. Even though it was a waterproof cast, we still had to dry it with a hair dryer if it got wet or else it smelled, so I wrapped it in a garbage bag or Meredith’s old rubber cast cover for baths. Just one more thing to worry about and it was super annoying! It was also very itchy by the end of the day, so I’d spend a few minutes after school each day scratching her arm for her with a popsicle stick!

Amelia had just started softball, too, and was doing really well with catching, throwing and hitting. Her broken arm put a damper on things for a few weeks, but luckily, it ended up raining almost every weekend and the games were cancelled anyway, so we didn’t miss out on too much. She was a trooper and every day would tell me proudly of all the things she did with her broken arm that day (climbing, drawing, writing, getting dressed by herself, swinging). Her piano teacher, Miss Jenny, was super concerned because her first recital was only two weeks away, but not only did she continue to practice with her cast, she played in the recital and did a great job!

Amelia had the cast on for four weeks, and boy were we happy to take it off. It’s easy to take things for granted when everything is going fine, but having the cast on made us grateful to have two healthy arms! The cast was so smelly and itchy by the end and Amelia was excited to have her right arm back.

At her parent teacher conference, Miss Linda showed me some handwriting from the beginning of the year, and a recent sample.

Unfortunately, it was not a great example of her progress, because the sample was from one day after she broke her wrist! Not bad for a broken wrist, though!

Everyday January

Eleanor tried lots of new foods in January! Green beans are not her favorite, but everything else she gobbles up. I’ve been experimenting making baby food in the Instant Pot… she still prefers store-bought pouches because she can feed herself.

GIVE ME THE SPOON.

January alternated between lovely, sunny days and freezing, rainy ones.

We attempted to teach Meredith the concept behind leapfrog.

She decided riding on her sisters was more fun.

Eleanor giggles at her sisters’ antics.

Every night before bed, Meredith asks to give Eleanor a little hug. She’s been begging to let Eleanor sleep in her room too, but that won’t happen for a while.

Rest stop on a hike.

Perfecting magnatile towers.

On one rainy Saturday, Jake took the girls to do crafts at Home Depot. They were proud of their Valentine’s box creations.

Eleanor continued to crawl backwards and even learned to spin around, but still didn’t quite get how to crawl forwards.

The girls created a car for themselves out of a huge box and styrofoam.

Meredith loves to fill the basket in her bike with random toys to bring to the park.

Samantha and Amelia went to Harper’s birthday party at Zoomars and spent almost the entire time feeding and petting every single guinea pig.

We had one week that was straight up torrential downpours every day. After school one day, I announced we were having a read-a-thon. I had to explain what that was a million times, but the girls eventually went along with it. We pulled out all of our bins of books and binge-read picture books all afternoon.

Eleanor’s favorite toys.

Playdate with Maple and Gavin inside on a rainy day!

Wearing one of Maple’s old size 2T sleepers!

We got to meet Amy’s new baby– sweet Carter!

Meredith’s playgroup for 2016 babies. Many of the moms also have 2018 babies like Eleanor, so both toddler and babies have some friends!

Art and projects from school this month:

At teacher conference, Samantha and Amelia’s teachers showed me the little word books they’ve done recently and said how impressed they were by the drawings! I’d say those are pretty detailed for a five-year-old!

We practiced catch and batting to get ready for the upcoming softball season. Hit a home run, Amelia!

Crystal Cove and Orange Groves

Christmas break was extra exciting for the girls since Aunt Sarah and Uncle Mike flew from Portland and Uncle Mike and Ali drove from Wyoming to play! The girls were so excited to hang out at Crystal Cove Beach with Aunt Sarah, Uncle Mike and Grammy. From hiking down the cliffs  and hunting for sea creatures in the tidepools to enjoying sandwiches and views at the Shake Shack, the girls loved playing tour guide. Photos by Aunt Sarah!

A little chilly for boardshorts, but that didn’t stop Meredith from splashing in the ocean with her pants.

Amelia the sandy.

Samantha contemplates the meaning of life.

Amelia feasts on seaweed (the Costco kind, not the fresh kind!)

Making a new friend.

Showing off a good find.

Finding crabs.

The girls also wanted to show Aunt Sarah and Uncle Mike our local orange groves. They biked to the park first for a quick detour.

Meredith quickly got to work filling up her basket with oranges.

Amelia with her pickings.

Samantha’s harvest.

The girls biked the rest of the way to the exploration park playground and then it was a minor crisis getting everyone home since they were so exhausted! I think we ended up with me pushing Meredith in the stroller and carrying her bike, Uncle Mike carrying a bike and trading off twins on his shoulders, while Aunt Sarah gave moral support to the whichever twin was taking a turn riding her bike! The way back is all uphill and a few miles… but we did it. In the mean time, Grammy had taken Eleanor for a stroller ride to meet us at the park, but arrived right after we left. We almost dispatched a car to go find her and pick it up, but she and Eleanor made it home eventually!
