Celebrating Grammy

While Grammy and Grandpa were here a few weeks ago for the twins’ birthday, we also celebrated another BIG birthday– Grammy’s 60th! The twins’ birthday falls a day after Grammy’s, and Meredith’s falls a day after Grandpa’s. Easy to remember!

Great Uncle David and Great Aunt Linda drove out from Yucca to celebrate and our entire circus had brunch at Ramos House Cafe in San Juan Capistrano.

After looking at the restaurant’s website, I was initially a little worried since it said only “well-behaved” children were welcome, but all three girls were fabulous. A lot of that probably had to do with the restaurant’s mouth-watering biscuits and honey butter, which the girls inhaled continuously throughout brunch. While the adults chatted, Amelia was busy licking her honey butter jar clean.

We were so happy Great Uncle David and Great Aunt Linda could join us to celebrate Grammy’s birthday and to meet Meredith for the first time! Meredith could definitely sense there were some fun times to be had in her future with such a fun-loving great uncle and aunt!

Meredith enjoyed being held throughout our brunch.

While the rest of the grown-ups strolled along the cute streets of San Juan Capistrano, we hung out at the park and then headed home. The girls could obviously sense that we were planning to go out to dinner that night without them because they didn’t nap and were rambunctious all afternoon. Thankfully, they went to bed early so that we could head out with Meredith and join everyone for Grandma’s birthday dinner at Bru.

It’s so special that the girls and Grammy share a birthday so close together. She’s gracious enough to not care that her birthday has been overshadowed by the twins’s birthday ever since they were born!

IMG_1764

The girls somehow convinced Grammy that their birthday present to her would be her taking them to Build a Bear. Can’t argue with three-year-old logic.

IMG_4524

Grandpa went as well and documented the whole procedure for me since I was at home with Meredith. IMG_4529  Giving her bear a heart. IMG_4531 IMG_4533 IMG_4532

The girls are obsessed with their bears and had a great time picking out all their accessories.

IMG_4530

Amelia shows off her bear’s birth certificate and unsurprisingly named it “Pinkabah.” I have no clue from where that word originated, but it’s the name they give all their stuffed animals and other inanimate friends.

IMG_0161

Thank you, Grammy and Grandpa! The girls had fun showing me their spoils when they got home– especially how the bear says, “I love you,” when you squeeze its paw. At bedtime, I always hear the bear sounds of “I love you” emanating rom the girls’ room.

IMG_0164

They even made one for Meredith and very appropriately decided to dress her bear in a onesie.

IMG_4472

Grammy and Grandpa’s birthday visit was short but sweet and it’s always a nice break for me whenever they are here. A few leftover pictures from the last time they came when Meredith was born:

Grammy was out and about with the twins all day every day right after Meredith was born– such a lifesaver! She took them to their classes…

IMG_1084

IMG_1067

IMG_1076

Their last dance class for a while! The girls were reportedly not paying attention and were running around the dance room. Can’t say I blame them since Grammy thought the class was pretty non-imaginative for the three-year-old set. Of course, now that the girls have been out for a month, they are asking to go back!

IMG_0036

She and Grandpa kept the girls busy at some of their favorite places, including Zoomars.

She and Grandpa even went to my Moms of Multiples Club event for me.

IMG_4208

It’s a wonder Grammy wasn’t too exhausted from her first trip in February to come out again in March. The girls are most certainly keeping her and Grandpa young!

That time we lived in a hotel with a newborn

The first few weeks that Meredith joined our family were crazy… and not just because we had a newborn in the house. Recovering from birth, caring for Meredith, and acclimating to the new normal with the twins seemed like a piece of cake compared to having to move to a hotel for ten days!

When Meredith was two weeks old, we had a slab leak downstairs, ruining the floor and forcing us out during demolition and reconstruction. Serves me right for wishing we could replace our downstairs floor for so long. I was happy about the new flooring, but wished we could have had better timing!

IMG_4250

We packed up all our baby gear to move 30 minutes up the coast into the Marriott Newport Coast Villas for ten long days while the downstairs was under construction. Considering we were right next to the beach with plenty of entertainment for the twins and a kitchen so that we didn’t have to eat out much, it was not a bad place to stay by any means.

However, there’s no place like home… especially when you’ve just had a baby!  All I wanted during those two weeks was to be home with everything back in place and life back to normal. It really takes a crisis situation to show you what’s important in life!

Fortunately, my mom was still in town to help out, so she stayed with us while we were in Newport and performed her job as entertainer-in-chief with the twins admirably. I wouldn’t have been able to deal with the hotel situation, recover from the birth and take care of Meredith without her and Jake keeping me sane.

But wait… there’s more! The horror of the slab leak pales in comparison to what happened during reconstruction. While the contractors were working in the kitchen, they apparently flipped a breaker without realizing it, shutting down our fridge and freezer for who knows how long. By the time they realized what happened, it was too late. All our food had spoiled!

This wouldn’t have been so terrible, except for the fact that I had spent the last few months preparing freezer meals for when the baby came. MONTHS  of work, blood, sweat and tears.

All the times I had made and frozen double batches of soup, chicken or whatever else we were having for dinner had gone to waste, not to mention countless Saturday mornings of work preparing and freezing breakfast and dinner meals. I had several Dream Dinners freezer meals my mom and I had spent several Saturday mornings making that were also ruined.

I cried more over my freezer meals than I did over the slab leak! Even though the contractors compensated us for everything we lost in the fridge and freezer, nothing could compensate for my time! Every time I open my freezer, I have a moment of silence in remembrance of my freezer meals. Still bitter!

Here’s us making the best out of a not-so-fun situation:

Meredith’s first “vacation.”

Due to our chaotic displacement, Meredith was seriously regretting deciding to join us a few weeks early.

There was a kids activity center on the property, which had a daily schedule of events, including movies, koi fish feeding, and themed craft days. They also had a few pools, a playground, air hockey, foosball, and a s’mores and hot dogs night around the fire pit, which was fun for the girls and Jake.

Busy crafting with play doh.

During the day, Jake took Bandit to work. Bandit enjoyed camping out in his office and learning about the law.

IMG_1422

I mostly stayed in our room with Meredith, but if I could time her feedings right, we were able to get out and lounge by the pool.

Meanwhile, Grandma took the twins out to activities at the villas and around Newport every day. It’s hard to say who was more tired… me staying up at night with a newborn, or Grandma getting the twins tired out all day. Thank goodness she was still in town to help!

IMG_1487

Meredith loved to “shade bathe.”

IMG_1486Samantha and Amelia made the best of it, considering they just had a new member of the family usurp their authority as sole attention-getters and were now staying somewhere unfamiliar. They were usually pooped for nap, but were cranky and clingy during the day many times. It was a lot of change all at once for them, poor things! IMG_1494

The girls were very helpful entertaining Meredith.

IMG_4298

IMG_1511

Such sweet big sisters.

IMG_1530

The villas had a shuttle that went all over the place, including across the street to Crystal Cove Beach and down PCH to Laguna Beach, so we really didn’t even need a car. Grandma and Jake took the girls to the Spectrum, Pretend City, and to the beach a few times, just to change things up a bit. Even though the villas had plenty of activities, staying anywhere but home got old fast.IMG_1546

IMG_1429

IMG_4252

Allison, Zack and Noah had originally planned on meeting Meredith at home, but with the construction going on, they came to see her at the hotel instead. As a bonus, the twins got to swim with Noah!

IMG_4295

IMG_4294

The Smith family lives nearby and they came to visit us as well. The girls had a blast swimming with Kennedy and Sebastian.

IMG_4279

After ten days of living in a hotel, our house was finally ready! We celebrated our last night in Newport Coast by going out to dinner at the Beachcomber in Crystal Cove. My mom had flown back to Utah that weekend (sob!), so this was our first official dinner out with our whole family, without extra help.

We got a lot of stares as our circus barged in, but I must say, all three girls were well behaved and received many compliments.

IMG_1567

Maybe the s’mores had something to do with the good behavior?

IMG_1569

IMG_4310Farewell, Newport Coast! We made the best of our impromptu vacation, but were so glad to go home! And yes, I am still mourning my freezer meals.

Meredith’s Newborn Photos

While Sarah was here in February, she did several newborn shoots with Meredith over the course of a few days. The perks of having a sister who is a photographer!

There are dozens more where these came from, but these are a few of my favorites. She made it impossible to choose one for Meredith’s birth announcement!

All photos by Sarah Arnoff.

Since Sarah was around for a few days, we got to experiment taking photos at different times of day, in different settings, and (most importantly!) with different accessories!
