Cousin Maddy Comes to Visit

In August, Jake’s niece, Madelynne, came to visit all the way from Michigan. She was a lifesaver of help while she was here, just like the last time she came!

Flashback to 2013:

No one ever accused my babies of being skinny!

IMG_4933

Last time Maddy was here, she put together a fun “Baby Olympics” competition, featuring such legit sports as baby diapering, a timed stroller run, and best dressed baby contest– obviously, I won.

IMG_5229

This time around, Samantha and Amelia were a lot more mobile and talkative (read: more exhausting). They clung to Maddy from the get-go and had the best time with their cousin!

IMG_1926

On my end, it was nothing short of amazing having Maddy’s help. While Jake was at work, Maddy helped cook, clean, dress, and feed the girls and attended their normal activities, like My Gym, with me. With the extra set of hands, I almost didn’t know what to do with myself! Maddy also babysat for us several times and took the girls to the pool with Jake almost every day.

IMG_1914

We went on a shopping outing so that Maddy could buy some new school clothes while she was here. The girls made a quick detour to the dinosaur section while Maddy was trying on outfits.

Amelia loves “shopping.” IMG_8343

At home, the girls loved having Maddy read to them, do arts and crafts, make zuchinni muffins, and do some gardening. As the guest of honor, the girls let Maddy pick our first ripe mini pineapple we’ve grown in our garden. We only got a 1/4 inch chunk each, but man, was it the best pineapple we’ve ever tasted!

IMG_1921

Poor Maddy had to be squished between the girls whenever we went somewhere.

Near the end of her trip, we all went to hang out at the beach in Oceanside and went to Legoland the next day.

Normally when we take the girls out to eat or to a hotel, it feels like way more of a hassle than just staying at home. With Maddy there, however, Jake and I were actually able to relax a bit and be on “vacation.”

Highlight: Jake and I eating breakfast together in the morning, while Maddy stayed with the snoozing girls in the hotel! By far our best hotel experience with the girls so far.

In the morning, it was Legoland time!

IMG_1970

Since we’d never been to the waterpark portion, we decided to hit that first. I pretty much just sat back on a beach chair while Jake and Maddy took the girls in the wave pool, the tubing river, and down the slides.

Samantha and Amelia spotted a log ride with a pretty intense-looking drop, and of course, wanted to go– against my wishes. When the girls returned, visibly shaking and with ghostly white faces, I knew I should have stuck to my guns!

Maddy and Jake recounted how the girls, sandwiched between them, were excited about the ride on the way up, but screamed hysterically on the way down and throughout the big SPLASH! It took a minute for both sobbing girls to calm down as the log rounded the corner, but after a bit, Samantha calmed down and announced she wanted to go, “Again! Again!”

Amelia screamed, “Noooooooooo!!!!” in protest. Just as the log ride was approaching the end, the ride made a “click click” sound on the track, similar to the click you hear when the ride is going up the hill. As soon as the girls heard the click of the track, they thought they were going up (and thus DOWN) again.

According to Jake and Maddy, Samantha and Amelia immediately turned to each other, clutched each other for dear life, and screamed their heads off in protest! That priceless imagery makes me wish I was there! My poor little wet koalas!

Samantha attached to Maddy after a traumatizing log ride.

IMG_1976

After that, the girls opted to go on some tamer waterslides.

IMG_1985

IMG_1987

The water park was a blast…mostly because I experienced it sitting under an umbrella in a lounge chair sipping a smoothie!

After a morning at the waterpark, we spent the rest of the day sweating in the regular park.

I thought for sure that the girls would scream throughout the pirate ship ride that they begged to go on. Much to my surprise, they had no fear.

The girls are on the very back left, sandwiched between Jake and Maddy. Just watching this ride makes me sick.

The girls’ two favorite rides: the airplane and helicopter.

Considering I did basically no work the entire trip, our Legoland adventure was highly enjoyable.

We are so grateful Maddy was able to come out and we all had a big reality check the next day when she flew home. Luckily, per the girls’ request, we’ve already booked her for next summer. Something to look forward to!

Come again soon, Cousin Maddy!

Cousin Noah’s 1st Bday

Trying (and failing) to keep up with our summer adventures! This one is from a while ago!

When we told Samantha and Amelia that we would be going to celebrate Baby Noah’s very 1st birthday, the girls could not contain their excitement. “Cake! Candles! Cake!” they chanted non stop.

The cake the girls had so been looking forward to did not disappoint! Neither did all of the adorable decorations.

IMG_1692

In a sad twist of fate, the day of Noah’s birthday party coincided with the most random summer torrential downpour. Everyone joked it was Noah’s Ark come to life. Allison had worked so hard setting up a veritable toddler playland outside, complete with the cutest of decorations, but alas, it was not meant to be. The girls were perfectly happy with Plan B– toddler playroom in the garage.

IMG_1686IMG_1687

Besides the fun Dot Dot markers, animal masks and toddler jungle gym, the girls’ favorite part was the food.

IMG_1683IMG_1682

Unlike the girls, who cried hysterically at their own 1st birthday party when they were placed in their high chairs during their happy birthday song, Noah was a happy camper throughout and was a perfect gentleman trying his cake. Bring on the dessert!

IMG_1695IMG_1699IMG_1701

Guilty as charged.

IMG_6061

The girls couldn’t wait to give Noah their puzzle.

IMG_1703After most of the guests had left, the girls helped themselves to all of Noah’s new toys.

IMG_1707IMG_1710

After all that sugar and party going, the girls curled up in Noah’s nursery to watch a show.

IMG_1702

Noah was the perfect host and didn’t mind a bit! We were so happy to be able to celebrate with him. Happy 1st birthday, Noah!

Summer fun with Grammy and Papi

It was vacation time for Jake and I when Grammy and Papi swooped in from Utah to spend some quality time with S and A. Grammy immediately took over all the cooking, grocery shopping, errand-running and twin-rearing, leaving me with more free time than I knew what to do with.

Jake and I took advantage of the free babysitting and made it out on a few date nights and breakfast dates while the girls had a blast going to My Gym with Grammy and Papi, going to the lake and going out to dinners and lunches. Even when Jake and I were there, just having the extra hands around to help with the girls and their regular routine made things light years easier.

It wasn’t really a vacation for my parents, but it sure was for us!

The girls were ecstatic to have Grammy and Papi here and thrived on the fresh faces around to deal with their usual antics. After all, obnoxious things that usually send me into fits of frustration, like Amelia rolling out all the toilet paper or Samantha tearing all her clothes off and running around like a maniac, are positively endearing to the grandparents, since they don’t have to deal with it every day!

Storytime with Grammy was a regular request, and it wasn’t unusual for the girls to collect every book in the house for her to read in one sitting.

IMG_1727

Day to day events like going swimming, scootering around the neighborhood, playing at the park, going to the library, and arts and crafts at home were way more fun with Grammy and Papi around. The girls especially loved hanging out at We Play Loud on one of the hot mornings, and the Discovery Cube on another muggy day.

After countless exciting adventures with Grammy and Papi, we capped off their stay with a trip to the OC Fair, which was a highlight for the girls. Ever since we attended a carnival hosted by a friend’s church earlier this summer, fairs have been high at the top of the girls’ list of favorite outings, and we bribed them all day with the promise of going to the big “car-bi-val.”

It’s been a goal of mine to get pictures of the girls with the giant turkey legs they sell at the fair and the girls did not disappoint. If I had a dime for every person who stopped to stare in shock and then laugh hysterically at the girls clutching their turkey legs…

IMG_8258

S and A desperately wanted to ride all the farm animals they saw, but settled on these instead.

IMG_1764

After we left the fair, this train ride was all the girls would talk about. “Bye bye, choo choo!” they lamented as we drove in the car. Apparently, this one was special!IMG_1781

No fear on the giant slide. IMG_1773     IMG_1772

I was surprised by how many rides the girls were tall enough to go on. It was sad, but slightly hilarious, when broken-hearted kids older than the girls were turned away from rides because of the height minimum. That’s one advantage of being tall, girls!

IMG_8263

One thing I’m not fond of at carnivals and fairs is getting suckered into throwing away boatloads of cash on tickets for games and carnivals, but somehow, we always give in. At least the girls always go for the “winner every time” games. IMG_1774

Showing off their bounty. IMG_1776

Look, Grammy!IMG_1779

It was a sad, sad day with Grammy and Papi had to leave back for Utah… mostly for Jake and I since we were now back on our own in real life! Tears were most definitely shed as we felt very sorry for ourselves! The following week was rough, to say the least, as we had both grown used to the extra help, but we were grateful for the refreshing break, nonetheless.

The girls were bummed too and continually asked, “Where’s Grammy? Where’s Papi?” for days afterward. When we’d explain they went back to Utah, the girls would whimper in their most pathetic-sounding voices, “We…want…go…Utah…too!”

A few hours after they had left, Sammy was upset and begged to go to this mysterious “Utah.” Nothing would placate her, and I needed to run to the car wash, so in a desperate effort to get her into the car and stop crying, I told her we were going to Utah.

The girls didn’t seem to question it at all when we arrived at the car wash and went on with the rest of their day, happy as clams. Now, every time we pass it, they point and say, “Utah!”

Poor girls are going to grow up so confused!

Father’s Day Craft and Pool Party

The week before Father’s Day, our friend, Amy, invited us over for a fun craft we could give to Daddy. She was incredibly brave to let toddlers paint at her house, but she’s so organized that everything turned out surprisingly mess-free.

IMG_1455

IMG_1458

Camdyn was so adorable helping Samantha with her art project. She would ask Samantha what color she wanted, Samantha would tell her and then Camdyn would help paint her hand and place it on the paper. I didn’t even have to do a thing– these girls had it covered.

IMG_1462

Addison, an expert crafter herself, was the perfect teacher for Amelia.IMG_1463 IMG_1466

IMG_1469

Once we peeled off the tape, their creations were revealed! Super cute and Daddy loved them.

IMG_1500

Friday night, we had a pre-Father’s Day Pool Party with some of our neighbors. S and A learned a lot of fun tricks from their friends– there are so many little fishes in our group.

IMG_1481

Samantha liked to hang out by the stairs and practice kicking. IMG_1482

Amelia decided to try her luck without floaties after seeing her friends do it. IMG_1492

At one point, Samantha got out of the pool and figured it was far more important to be snacking on chips and guac than swimming with her friends. IMG_1496

Parker, Samantha, Amelia, Addison, and Camdyn– the cuties of summer! The girls had a blast hanging out with Kennedy, who left before we took the picture, and we missed our friend, Logan– they had accidentally gone to a different pool and were confused why no one was there for the pool party. Bummer!IMG_1489

S and A’s favorite part is always the pool shower!IMG_1498

We are looking forward to many more pool dates this summer!
