Slices of life

Just a few slices of life from our week:

We’ve been finding all sorts of creatures on our patio as of late and S and A are becoming quite the reptile connoisseurs. Squeamish these girls are not.

Side note: Bandit caught and killed his first bunny the other day. It was incredibly traumatizing and totally my fault because I was throwing a ball for him at the park and had him off the leash. A bunny darted out from a bush, and as per usual, he went after it, except this time he actually caught it.

By the time I realized what had happened, Bandit was sniffing the dead bunny, tail wagging and looking up at me like, “What happened? It doesn’t want to play anymore?” There was no blood or anything (it looked like Bandit’s first instinct was to grab it by the neck and fling it, which probably broke the poor creature’s neck) but I still had to stop myself from getting too upset since the girls were right there playing in the sand, completely oblivious. I’m sorry, bunny!

It feels like summer already with the days getting longer– bring it on! We usually eat dinner around 5 or 5:30 and then head out for a walk around the neighborhood, a trip with Bandit to the dog park or a short romp at the playground. S and A have been awesome about going to sleep in their toddler beds after our evenings out (knock on wood). Jake does most of the bedtime routine while I pop in to read a book or two and then kiss them goodnight.

Swinging Samantha.
Samantha’s current favorite game is peekaboo/hide and seek. She scares me half to death sometimes when she suddenly disappears. Have to keep my eye on that one!

S on the left and A on the right. We’ve figured out that Samantha’s name for Amelia is “Ba.” And she actually responds to it. We figure Samantha’s probably been calling her that for the past year and we just never realized it! Both Samantha and Amelia call S “Sammy” and while we’ve tried various nicknames on Amelia (Mia, Millie), none of them ever stuck. Other kids their age can pronounce Amelia just fine, but it’s a hard one for the girls. For now, we’re still calling Amelia by her full name and letting Samantha call her Ba.

Nature lovers! On weekend mornings or in the afternoons when Jake gets home, the girls love to go on little nature walks out in the back of our house.

Down in the canyon in the back, someone put in a tire swing on one of the oak trees. Samantha is pretty indifferent to it, but Amelia can swing all day on that thing.

Samantha likes to observe from trees.

After naps if we don’t have anywhere to go in the afternoons, the girls will typically ask to get out their art supplies. Anything involving stamps, chalk, markers, or paint is pretty popular around here. The girls’ signature creations involve Mommy, Daddy, and Bandit.

Oh the messes. Samantha demonstrates her classic smirk while cleaning up her shredded coconut dump.

S and A are still arabesque-ing up a storm at dance class and still have their weekly MyGym class as well. Our music class ended, but having three classes over the winter was a bit too much, so we didn’t renew, (I’ll revisit the idea for the summer session). I am looking forward to having Tuesday mornings free to do whatever and not have to feel stressed getting the girls on the potty and out the door at an exact time.

I’ll lend you a hand!

The girls have been in to “reading” books independently lately. Their favorites are every single one of their animal books, Pinkalicious, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, Polar Bear, Polar Bear, Little Bunny Foo Foo, Hands Can and Don’t Push the Button. If I walk in on them reading in their room, they look at me like I’ve intruded on their privacy and shoo me away.

It’s nice to have a sister who can help you adjust your fairy wings when needed.

Post-Passover with Baby Noah

Even though the girls aren’t in school, it was hard not to catch Spring Break fever from everyone else who was off for the week and wanting to play. Spring Break meant two things for us: Baby Noah was in town AND Passover food! Double bonus.
S and A are huge fans of Great Auntie Lynn’s cooking and gobbled up her famous matzoh ball soup, potato kugel, fruit kugel, chicken, asparagus and carrots. We love Passover food! S and A taunted poor Noah while they chowed down– he looked pretty jealous!
Even though the girls had their fill of sweetness from the fruit kugel, we all went out and picked up some Yogurtland to bring back to the house later. Double dessert for the girls may not have been such a good idea so close to bedtime, but the girls were ecstatic.

No need to ever buy new toys. We’ll just visit Noah when he comes to town or play at his house. S and A were totally occupied with all of his baby toys and books.

Noah felt a little ganged up upon with two girls stealing his toys.

Can’t believe he’s already crawling!

All morning, I had been telling the girls that we would be going to visit Baby Noah later and they wouldn’t stop chanting, “Baby! Baby!” the entire day. Once we arrived at the door, they sang, “Babbbbbyyyyyyy!” again. I think they are finally recognizing their cousin.

We all had a nice storytime with Great Auntie Lynn and the girls’ selection out of Noah’s books: Elmo.

We can’t wait until Noah is walking and these three are chasing each other around. Talk about entertainment!

Piers, Parks and Pelicans in Oceanside

After a full day at the Wild Animal Park and a good night’s rest sans hotel room parties (finally), we relaxed around Oceanside and played at the beach before heading home.

Amelia spent a good amount of time trying to pet one of these:
98% of these pictures are of Amelia because she was in a happy little mood, unlike Samantha who wasn’t feeling well.
While Amelia walked the pier spotting pelicans, Samantha stayed like this:
Amelia watched the waves crash with Daddy.
Hey there, pelican.
From the pier, the girls spotted this playground right on the beach they wanted to check out.

Checking out the water from beach front property.
Amelia would swing all day long if she had her way.
Samantha tried to have a good time, but mostly clung to Daddy.

Or poles.
So. Tired. Must. Climb.
Made it!

Amelia has a grip like I’ve never seen.

She’ll hang there for about five minutes before asking to get down.

Both S and A are fans of anything on which they can play balance beam.

Our short trip was our kind of vacation. Homeward bound!

A day with the wild animals

Last week, we decided to take advantage of the fact that one of Jake’s trials was postponed, and took a short staycation to Oceanside and the Wild Animal Park for a few days.
After leaving Bandit in the very capable hands of our neighbors (seriously– they take him to Starbucks, he walks to school with the kids, basically gets treated like a rock star) we took off down the coast. S and A had so much fun riding on the luggage rack and playing in the elevator, that we almost decided to hang at the hotel the entire trip.
The hotel was packed with all the Spring-Breakers; otherwise, S and A would have been content riding up and down the halls for a few solid hours.
Staying in hotels with the girls is getting more and more difficult due to the fact that sleeping in a room other than their own AND in the same room as us instantly raises their energy levels to epic proportions.  We don’t care if you two want to have a sister slumber par-tay…just not when we have to sleep in the same room as you!
I’m really looking forward to the day when the girls can have their own adjoining room, just a closed door away. I’m thinking when they’re three? Four?
Kidding– don’t call CPS on me.
We woke up bright and early (or, rather, super groggy from dealing with the girls’ late-night partying, in our case), enjoyed the ocean breeze (i.e. wrangled the girls away from climbing over our balcony wall and jumping), and headed to the Wild Animal Park.
Only the promise of animals would lure the girls away from the fire in the lobby.
Let’s stroll together, sister!

When I’ve been here by myself with the girls, we usually tend to see the monkeys and elephants first. By the time we get to the tigers, they are usually asleep, so we reversed course today.

Out of the two, that tiger definitely had his eyes set on Samantha– she’s three pounds bigger, after all.

Amelia carefully balanced her way over to the lorikeet landing.

Best part of the whole day! Lorikeet nectar: $2. Amelia’s face while feeding said lorikeets: priceless.

The girls went bonkers for these birds, who were obviously way overfed. It took a while to attract some over and land on our arms, at which point they refused to let the girls hold them (can’t say I blame them).

In a heroic act of selflessly making sure each girl received a turn to feed the lorikeets, Jake got bit more than a few times. That’s what I call sacrifice.

Next stop– the butterfly garden. The girls were stoked that they were conveniently wearing matching winged tank tops for the occasion.

It blew my mind that there was an HOUR AND A HALF wait to feed butterflies. I mean, seriously? We bought a Disneyland-Fast-Pass inspired ticket that let us bypass the line, but not before waiting in it for twenty minutes before realizing this was ridiculous. The fact that I didn’t have to spend another minute trying to keep S and A from eating the “butterfly food” (cups with watermelon inside) made it worth the money.

Hey– I wanted to eat that.

Amelia made sure she had the best butterfly catching seat in the house.

Before letting our group enter the the butterfly enclosure, the guide told us that the previous night, some of their exotic birds had accidentally entered the butterfly garden, and thus there were only about half as many butterflies today as there normally were. Cue awkward silence as we all stared at him, jaws dropped in horror, imagining greedy birds gobbling up beautiful butterflies. Good thing it was April Fool’s Day! That was a good one, my friend.

Impromptu dance party with the butterflies.

Mesmerized!

Exiting the butterfly exhibit was a maximum security event. We were all checked at three different doors and asked to spin around each time/bags checked to make sure no butterflies had hitched a ride with us. The girls just thought it was an extension of dance class.

I laugh in the face of danger.
After lunch, it was lights out. We found a nice babbling brook that provided some soothing, natural white noise for the girls to enjoy while they snoozed.

Out for the count. When do Jake and I ever get two hours to hang out in peace and quiet in the middle of the afternoon these days? This, right here, was our true vacation.

And we’re baaaaack.

Feeling dangerously optimistic, we decided to hang around the park until it closed instead of going back to the hotel. We seem to always make the mistake of pushing ourselves to the limit, instead of just quitting while we’re ahead and everyone’s happy. Things started deteriorating FAST about an hour after nap time was over. Lesson learned.

Fending off tantrums by chilling on the tram.
If you say so, mom.
Working on their life’s mission of riding every carousel in the world. Multiple times.
Just one more time before we go.

Last one, I promise.

Fortunately, no partying was had by anyone by the time we got back to the hotel. Sleep was our only agenda!
