Utah Christmas 2014 Recap Part II

More adventures in Utah continued as Jake, Grandma Jolene and the girls let mommy stay home and have a little peace and quiet (I actually read a book–heaven!) while they explored the Bean Museum and Toddler Town. From what it sounded like, Jake and my mom spent most of their time keeping S and A from climbing over the ropes and petting the taxidermy.
After sledding and building snowmen, S and A were pretty much over the beautiful snow. Anytime I so much as got them suited up in their gear, they would start crying pitifully and whimpering, “Coooooooold!” These California girls are used to being outside everyday, so finding indoor activities to keep them occupied proved challenging.
Fortunately, the novelty of Grandma’s house and the new toys, the rocking horse, the piano, and Uncle Mike’s camping hammock, to name a few, lasted throughout our stay. When the girls got cabin fever, one of our favorite places to take them was the new Provo Rec center. While I worked out, Jake supervised the girls in the rec center’s play place; but next trip, we will remember to bring their swim suits so they can try out the indoor waterpark there instead.
The Museum of Curiosity was such a hit, we explored it twice during our stay– once with Grandma Jolene and once with Aunt Juliette.
After drenching herself in the water exhibit, Samantha dried off with Daddy in the hurricane simulator, discovered she weighed 77,265 grasshoppers, fed the bunnies, and did some gardening.
The girls were fascinated for a solid 30 minutes at the laundry exhibit, pushing the buttons and watching the clothes go round and round. Genius. Pure genius.
Originally, Jake had planned a one-day getaway for our anniversary, which I nixed due to already being tired from the journey to Utah and my cold-weather induced laziness. Reservations at Sundance were also canceled as the girls had a hard time getting to sleep that night.
Instead, we were spontaneously driving in downtown American Fork on our way to see Into the Woods, when we spotted this bungalow-looking house that happened to be a dessert place called Slurp. It was pretty random, but a fun find. It felt like you were hanging out at your hipster friend’s place as they had left the rooms of the house, the fireplace, the couches, and everything home-y intact.
We couldn’t get over how yummy the flavored hot chocolates and sugar cookies were and the place had a unique feel– something we are not used to where we live. I’m always telling Jake how much I wish we had a place in California you could go to at night just to get homemade desserts like brownies, cookies, flavored hot chocolates (not just a coffee shop or ice cream place). A very spontaneous, but really fun anniversary!
Blast from the past. Some of my high school friends miraculously worked out their different schedules to meet for a short time and catch up.  S and A chatted with Alec, Ava, Beckham, Olivia, Lincoln, Liam, Blake and June, (catch my breath), while Sarah, Crysta, Zuleika and I tried our best to have a conversation over the noise of ten kids. This was S and A’s first time meeting Blake and June, but now that they’ve all met, we’ll leave the kids at home and go out just us next time around.
Like mama, like daughter.
Aquarium Round Two: this time with Aunt Sarah, Uncle Mike and his girlfriend, Ali. No bonked heads this time and the girls were just as fascinated as their last visit. A new favorite discovery was a ramp leading down from the penguins. We’ve decided to hold the girls’ next birthday party there (not in the whole aquarium– just on the ramp), based on the amount of time they gleefully spent running up and down.
Kangaroo Zoo bounce place was also a new discovery and the girls loved showing off their jumping skills for Grandma Jolene.
I give this place five starts for the big, comfy massage chairs in the “Parent Zone.”

I wish we had known before traveling around to all these places that the best bounce house of all was right there at Grandma’s!

Hours of Jumping. Diving. Giggling.

The best things in life really are free.

Utah Christmas 2014 Recap Part I

While the 1.2 million pictures we took on Christmas might seem otherwise, we actually did do other things during our stay in Utah.
After pulling an all-nighter driving to Utah, we cleaned ourselves up in time to make it to Jake’s niece, Mady’s, wedding reception at the Riverside Country Club. Yay for Christmas weddings (our anniversary is the 26th)! We had fun taking pictures in the photo booth and admiring all the cute details– I personally think anyone who got married before the advent of Pinterest (ME) should get an automatic do-over. Everything was adorable and it was fun to chat with members of Jake’s family whom we don’t get to visit very often.
After attending church with Jake’s family the next day, Jake’s brother, Tyler, hosted a post-wedding brunch at their house. The girls had a blast being silly with their six-foot tall cousin, the lovely Taylor Swift (Keitra).
Watching all the nieces interact with S and A was way too cute. Girl time!
Pictured below: Cate, Emma and Cassidy with S (in the vest) and A.
Pictured below: S and A were doted upon by Cate, Cassidy and Uncle Kip.

More cousins! (Have I mentioned Jake has 12 brothers and sisters?) Dyllan, Olivia and Lacey.

Speaking of Olivia and Lacey– time flies! Our wedding eight years ago:
For future record-keeping purposes, a list of Jake’s family members S and A saw on our trip:
Grandma Celeste
Jake’s sister, Valisa, Dan and cousins Shari, Quinn, Analise, and Josh
Jake’s brother, Tyler, Elizabeth and cousins Mady, Olivia, Corbin, Amelia, and Finn
Jake’s brother Ben and cousins Jordan, Alan, Lacey, Ryan, Cassidy, and Dyllan
Jake’s sister, Gigi, Kip and cousins Keitra, Regan, Ben and Mason
Jake’s brother Jarom, Jen and cousins Ethan, Emma, Claire and Cate
Jake’s sister, Angie, Drew and cousins Sam, Max and Britton
Jake’s sister, Juliette, Chris, and cousins Conner, Jackson, Bryce, Susanna, Alex, Ben, Spencer and Gabe
Jake’s brother, Andrew, Heather and cousin Chloee.
Phew! Did that from memory. Hard to believe that still doesn’t include three of Jake’s other siblings and their families.
The rest of the week, we discovered that Utah had a ton more kid-friendly attractions than when I was growing up there. At the new aquarium, we crossed the treacherous rope bridge in the Amazon and dodged vicious sharks with Grandma Celeste.

When she wasn’t pointing to every fish, Amelia spent most of her time on the floor, crawling around the caves in the slot canyon exhibit. While watching the penguins, Samantha fell off a ledge, and the bang was one of those you literally heard as her head collided with the tile. She stayed in Daddy’s arms after that unfortunate incident.

Had a quick bite to eat with cousin Chloee. The girls, Jake and Grandma Celeste checked out some kiddie thrill rides while I was helping my sister go wedding dress shopping (yay!).
We met up with Grandma Celeste, Juliette and cousins at the Museum of Curiosity.
S and A were cranky at first, but as a mom of two sets of twins, Juliette knew just how to get them on her side (read: gummies).
There’s more family fun where that came from.

Toddler Christmas: That’s a wrap

Hey girls– just because we’re at Grandma and Grandpa’s house doesn’t mean we don’t have work to do. What do you think this is– a vacation?
Upon our arrival in Utah, we had oodles of presents to wrap, most of which I had shipped from California to avoid having to pack them in the car. Grandma had put all the packages in one room, so when we entered and started going through the boxes, it was like a mini Christmas since I had forgotten about most of what I had ordered.

Little did Samantha and Amelia know that they were wrapping some of their own gifts. Oh the joys of having toddlers with the memory spans of goldfish.

Next year, I’m sure we won’t be so lucky.

Holding the forbidden scissors (heavenly voices singing in the background while a golden ray of light shines down).

Announcing Queen Samantha!
Da da da daaaaaaaa!

Dear Santa: My sister did it!
Hush, Samantha. I’m trying to concentrate on figuring out this tape thing.
Oooooh sticky.

Wrapped with love.

And way too much tape.

The girls took their wrapping very seriously and enjoyed it almost as much as opening up the wrapping paper a few days later. Almost.

Much like last year, the boxes (not the gifts) were the most fun. Why do we even bother with toys?

Amazon return ready to go.
All that hard work called for some gingerbread cookies.

You can’t stop me from eating this cookie. I’m at Grandma’s house. Full immunity.
C is for cookie; and cookies are for ME!

There’s more where that came from at Grandma’s house.

Lots of love,

A good day to be a Whitehead

Off to Grandmother’s house we go! After putting the girls to bed for the night, we did a lightning quick packing session and left on our adventure to Utah for the holidays. I usually drive the first half, but was so tired this time around that Jake drove nearly the entire ten-hour, middle-of-the-night journey, except for an hour in between St. George and Cedar City. Thanks, babe!
The girls usually sleep all the way through (hence the reason for driving at night), but at a gas stop in Primm, Samantha woke up and instead of drifting back to sleep once we hit the road, decided she would rather see the Vegas lights. She stayed awake, sometimes nodding off, sometimes giggling, all the way through Cedar City. I kept looking back at her thinking, “She’s GOT to be asleep now,” and there she’d be– eyes wide open and lips curled into a little smirk.
She finally fell back asleep three hours later (angels SING!) and we breathed a sigh of relief as we could once again open up caffeinated sodas and chocolatey snacks without her begging for one.
About an hour from my parents’ house, our hearts sank as we saw the red and blue flashing lights flip on after us. In Jake’s defense, we were in the middle of nowhere (Scipio, I think) we were so close to my parents’ we could taste it, and we were going down a hill.
Out of state plates and going significantly over the speed limit? No chance we would be let off. We didn’t try and argue or make excuses, but braced ourselves for a ridiculous dollar amount and a scolding.
To our glee, the super cool cop returned with a warning instead of a ticket, and we thanked him profusely. As he handed Jake the blessed warning, he asked, “Are you related to Jason Whitehead?”
“Possibly. I have a pretty big family. Why?”
“Jason is a Utah Highway Patrol officer around here and you look just like him. I thought he might be your brother.”
“Well, in that case, we are definitely related!”
Thank you, Jason Whitehead, whoever you are! You probably got us out of a very hefty fine and now we know who to name drop if we ever get pulled over again in Utah.
Riding high off avoiding a ticket, we rolled in, delirious with exhaustion around 7 a.m. and the girls miraculously stayed asleep for another hour before getting up for the day. Once awake, they were stoked to be at Grandma and Grandpa’s house and wasted no time touring each room and scouting out new toys.
Jake and I took turns napping while Grandma and Grandpa helped out with the girls; that’s one reason we don’t attempt to do a night drive straight through on the return trip— it’s less than ideal returning home after an all-night drive and having to take care of the girls solo.
On to the good stuff!
All geared up for some Antarctic expedition snow play!

A Christmas Story, anyone?

S and A could barely move in their snow outfits and weren’t quite sure what to do about it. If that’s not a recipe for hilarity, I don’t know what is.

Don’t know where my mom found this snow gear for Samantha, but the 80s is calling and wants it back.

Whenever the girls fell down in the snow, they would just sit there, not even attempting to get up. It seemed like they were mesmerized by the white, fluffy cold powder. At one point, Amelia fell down on all fours and just stared into the snow for five minutes.

Building our own Frosty. BEST DAY EVER.

I love you, Frosty.

Mom, take my picture, quick! He’s a celebrity, you know.
Sledding time.
Weeeeeeee! Notice Bandit leaping down the hill after Amelia.
THAT. WAS. AWESOME.
Let’s do this.
Here comes the sledding Sammy.

I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!

AMELIA, I’M HOLDING ON TIGHT!

Bandit was having almost as much fun as the girls.

Sledding buddies.
Bandit took it upon himself to check on the girls at the bottom of the hill to make sure all was well.
Can’t. Get. Up.
Let’s do THAT again. (Muffled giggle).

It’s lovely weather for a sleigh ride together with you.

More snow hugs.

What did you say happens if I stick my tongue on a pole?

Mommy and her crying snow bunny.

To their credit, S and A tolerated the snow longer than I thought they would before we retreated inside for some hot cocoa by the fire. Such California girls!

Lots of love,
