Year in Review 2017

When I look back at 2017, all I can remember is the overwhelming task of selling our house and moving to our new house! There was so much stress and work involved, and even more work to do in our new house, that it seems like it took up most of our time the entire year! However, our photos from 2017 tell a different story– I was amazed to see that we actually managed to cram in a whole lot more in between the packing, moving and and unpacking!

Here’s our 2017 in review!

JANUARY:

Meredith turned the big ONE.

Despite running out of gas on the way to the party and not having much time left to set up, Meredith’s Teddy Bear Picnic Party was my favorite party of all time!

FEBRUARY:

Once Meredith started walking, a few weeks after her first birthday, the twins exclaimed, “She’s a toddler!” Yup. It’s official.

Valentine’s Day and fun in the midst of being forced to keep our house clean for showings at any given time.

MARCH:

Happy 4th birthday, Samantha and Amelia!

My assessment of the girls’ first time at Disneyland: “So, basically, we could have stayed at home and gone to the park, splash pad and pool for free and the girls would have been just as happy. But then we wouldn’t have been able to experience family bonding through the exhausting, tantrum-inducing sugar and sensory-overload that is the magic of Disney!”

St. Patrick’s Day and taking advantage of the nice weather to hit the beach.

Learning to ride bikes!

APRIL:

Happy Easter and Happy Birthday, Mommy!

Beach camping in San Clemente.

It’s not spring without strawberry picking.

MAY:

Happy Mother’s Day!

Sammy gets glasses and Meredith gets her first hair cut.

The twins enjoyed being polar bears for their gymnastics recital.

Fun with Grandpa, the Kagels and Gerin’s in Mission Bay, San Diego for Ben’s law school graduation.

JUNE:

Farewell to our beloved neighborhood friends!

New house chaos and cooling off in the summer heat.

Happy Father’s Day!

Swim lessons at Miss Conni’s and dance recital.

JULY:

Happy 4th!

Enjoying our neighborhood water park, a superhero-themed Vacation Bible School and picking out American Girl dolls.

Our Pioneer Day trip to Utah with the Gerins! We had a blast river rafting, exploring Park City, hiking to waterfalls, going to the Tracy Aviary with Aunt Sarah, and hanging out in Grammy’s backyard!

AUGUST:

On our way back from Utah, we took a detour to Cedar Breaks and loved our breathtaking hikes through the red rock and meadows.

A morning at Crystal Cove.

And the award for first twin to break her arm goes to… Samantha! The twins still refer to that zipline where she broke it as “The park where Sammy broke her arm!”

SEPTEMBER:

First day of preschool!

Raspberry and apple picking.

Breakfast with the mermaids, cooling off in the pool and yoga!

Fall pics.

OCTOBER:

Visiting the pumpkin patch with Grammy and Grandpa.

Legoland with the Gerins.

Hailey’s first birthday and Meredith tags along to a preschool field trip to Zoomars.

Aunt Sarah joined us at the water park, the pool and beach and took some adorable photos!

Happy Halloween from Harry Potter and Hermoine, Samantha the mouse, Amelia the cat and Meredith the owl.

NOVEMBER:

School pics!

Trying to block out morning sickness while running the Color Run and hanging out in San Diego with Lucero and her family.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Post-Thanksgiving trip to Aunt Linda and Uncle David’s and fun at the Living Desert Zoo.

DECEMBER:

Gender Reveal– it’s a girl!

Christmas recital and seeing the neighborhood lights with the Nguyens.

Preschool Santa visit and Christmas carol sing-along.

Celebrating Hanukkah with the Kagels and Gerins and exciting excursions to the beach and Knott’s with Grammy and Grandpa.

Merry Christmas!

Post-Christmas trip to San Francisco while the girls had fun at home with Grammy and Grandpa.

And that’s a wrap, 2017!

We asked the twins a few questions about their year and even when one answered first, they tended to agree with teach other…

Favorite part of 2017: Playing in Grammy’s backyard and swimming in our pool

Least Favorite part of 2017: MOVING!

Thing they like best about our new house: the craft room and the pool

Things they miss about our old house: their bedrooms, our herb garden and the garage play area?!!

Favorite party: Meredith’s Teddy Bear Picnic 1st Bday

Favorite theme park: Disneyland

Favorite trip: Utah

Favorite holiday: tie between Christmas and 4th of July

Favorite part of preschool: their birthday celebration and snacks/crafts, freeze dance (Amelia)

Favorite winter activity: sledding

Favorite spring activity: picking strawberries and Easter egg hunt

Favorite summer activity: the beach, going to the water park and riding bikes

Favorite fall activity: pumpkin patch

Activity they want to do again soon: camping

Most grievous injury (Samantha): breaking her leg

Most grievous injury (Amelia): hurting her knee badly while running down a hill and tripping

Most grievous injury (Meredith): getting bit by a lorikeet bird at the zoo

Biggest accomplishment (twins): mastering all the letters, beginning to read, and getting good at folding laundry

Biggest accomplishment (Meredith): walking and talking

Favorite class: Primary

Least favorite class: swimming lessons

Favorite game: Pie Face and What Time is it, Mr. Fox

Favorite gift: new frilly nightgown pajamas from Santa

Favorite everyday activities: picking flowers and making bouquets for mommy, scootering/biking around the neighborhood, coloring and crafts and playing “family” and “family picnic” with Meredith and their dolls

What they look forward to most about 2018: new baby sister!

Lots of love,

Year in Review 2015

Maybe it’s the pregnancy fog, but thinking back on 2015, it seemed to all blur together as just a series of mundane, every day happenings. Compared to the previous baby years, it didn’t seem like the girls had hit any huge milestones. Then, I actually looked back at our photos and previous blog posts and wow– we actually had quite a busy year!

The girls hit some major milestones, including potty training, being moved to toddler beds, talking non-stop, and giving up their Wubs. Major events included starting a new law firm, being pregnant with Baby Girl #3, birthdays, our anniversary, Sarah’s wedding, and a year of major home projects. If I had to classify 2015 as a movie genre, it would definitely be an action-comedy… between work and home life, it was a year of adventures., laughs (and definitely some tears!)

JANUARY:

For the first few days of January, we were wrapping up our Christmas vacation to Utah and having some New Year’s fun!

newyear PicMonkey Collage

On the way home from Utah, we stayed in St. George and played with cousins (Jarom’s family) on Jake’s side. Later in January, Grandpa came to visit and the girls had a blast eating crab and going to the beach with Noah.

PicMonkey Collage2

Since the girls had started showing interest in using the potty since they were about 20 months, we started potty training in earnest as soon as we got back from Utah. The girls did really well and, while they definitely had periods of regression over the following months, we said goodbye to daytime diapers forever! We waited until this December to nap and night train and now they are officially done, although accidents do happen! Thank goodness, because there is no way I was going to do three in diapers!

Looking back on January, it must have been hot because we spent a ton of time outdoors. The girls and I took our first solo outing to the San Diego Wild Animal park on one of the warmer days.

FEBRUARY:

We celebrated Valentine’s with our two funny valentines:

vdat

We also celebrated Valentine’s Day with the Moms of Multiples club at the park and S and A tried their hand at baseball and their first cake walk.

PicMonkey Collage

Sunny weather meant lots of park and beach days.

In addition to potty training, the girls hit another big milestone when we moved the girls out of cribs and into toddler beds. I cringed reading back on the post I wrote about transitioning them to the beds… it did not go as smoothly as planned!

The girls also started “dance” class (basically just an excuse to prance around in tutus and fairy wings) and we began our first construction project of the year, the upstairs flooring. It was definitely the year of construction projects! Until I sat down and listed it all, I didn’t realize how much we had actually done this year:

Master bath flooring

Master bath vanities, mirrors, lighting,  fixtures, baseboards and paint

Master bedroom flooring, baseboards, plantation shutters and paint

Upstairs living area flooring, plantation shutters, baseboards, paint

Laundry room flooring, trim and paint

Upstairs bath flooring, vanities, mirrors, fixtures, cupboards, lighting, paint and baseboards

Nursery wainscoting, crown moulding, baseboards, plantation shutters, paint and closet

Stairs and hallway flooring, trim and paint

Downstairs bath cupboards, paint and trim

Downstairs kitchen/family room: Plantation shutters, crown moulding, baseboards, paint, replacement of windows and sliding glass door.

Basically, we spent the year at Home Depot and the girls were so used to having tools out and contractors in and out that it was weird not to be working on something/have workers at the house!

MARCH:

A busy month! We celebrated Samantha and Amelia’s second birthday!

MAY:

Our big main adventure of May (and probably the entire year) was Jake officially starting his own firm, Whitehead Employment Law. After becoming a partner at his firm last year, we decided this was the year he would finally be able to go out on his own, a dream of his since the very beginning. Having his own business has not come without its challenges, but Jake loves, loves, loves (did I mention LOVES?) being the one to call all the shots. Everything about being a managing partner was a huge learning curve, from building a website to managing the paralegals and other attorneys who work for him (we had some tough hirings and firings this year), but taking that first leap was a huge (and scary) step and he’s done a tremendous job growing the business these first few months.

JULY:

It’s so funny looking back on my posts from the year– blogging dropped off precipitously in July and the following months, which directly corresponded to my morning sickness, Jake being crazy busy with his firm, and huge construction projects. Looking back at my photo stream, there are way more photos taken from Home Depot and various renovation stores than there are of our actual family!

Happy 4th of July! We watched the parade in Ladera with the Wrights and barbecued with our neighborhood friends.

AUGUST:

Announcing Baby Girl #3 coming soon! The girls were ecstatic to pick out some baby clothes and have talked about “their” new baby constantly ever since we introduced them to the idea.

Jake’s niece, Maddie, visited from Michigan and was a huge help to me with the girls. We took a day trip to Legoland and the waterpark while she was here and it was nice not having to go on the rides myself!

Our buddy, Parker’s, fourth birthday party at Cal Elite Kids, was definitely one of the girls’ favorite parties of the year. They were exhausted after all the trampoline jumping and acrobatic swinging!

SEPTEMBER:

We took a day trip to Legoland with Parker, Phi and Michael and spent half the day at the regular park and the other at the water park. The kids had a blast together!

First Utes game of the season, the girls tried their hand at bowling for the first time and we spent more than a few days at We Play Loud or other indoor kids places as the weather was still so scorching! Thankfully, I had a lot more energy by then and my nausea was pretty much gone as I entered the second trimester. sep

Jake drove us out to Utah and flew back home to work during our extended stay in Utah. We hiked and fed the fish at Bridal Veil Falls with Grammy, rode the ponies at Thanksgiving Point and visited several museums.

While the girls and I were hanging out with Grammy, Jake took a much-deserved road trip with Jarom, one of this brothers, to see the Oregon-Utah game in Eugene. After returning home, he worked and finished up a few flooring projects while we were in Utah.

OCTOBER:

The beginning of October was busy with final wedding preparations and visiting with family who came into town. We took a morning walk to Bridal Veil Falls with Noah and family and traveled up to Solitude in the mountains where we stayed for a few days during the wedding. Grammy and Grandpa rented a cabin for other family members staying there for the wedding and the girls had a great time exploring and roasting s’mores around the cabin.

The big day! Sarah’s wedding was gorgeous, it didn’t rain (or snow) and the girls walked down the aisle in their handmade dresses from Aunt Annie and their flower girl baskets without a hitch! After performing their flower girl duties, Samantha and Amelia clocked out and were crazy cranky the rest of the evening, but we still managed to enjoy some dancing and photo booth fun with family and friends. It was a wonderful wedding and we were so happy for Sarah and Mike!

For a few days after the wedding, we hung out in the mountains at Solitude and relaxed. utah2

We were sad to end our extended Utah vacation, but quickly got back into the swing of things at home. We picked pumpkins at Tanaka Farms with cousin Noah and again with our friend, Grace.

We made the trek to USC with the Smiths for the girls’ first in-person Utes Game! Kennedy shared her peanuts and cotton candy with the girls, which got them through the fourth quarter.

Happy Halloween! Despite changing their minds every hour about what they wanted to be for Halloween, the girls ended up embracing their Bat Girl and Robin (or “Red Bat” as Amelia insisted upon) costumes and were total pros trick-or-treating. No shyness that night whatsoever.

Slices of every day life included bike riding, making various projects out of cardboard, reminiscing about when Daddy used to carry them around in the Moby wrap, park days, dinner with Great Grandpa, and keeping busy at church.

The girls’ first plane ride was successful and we made a short trip to Utah for my friend, Kati’s, wedding and to have a pre-Thanksgiving dinner with family. The girls had never played in such a big leaf pile before and braved the cold to frolic in the leaves.

We were back home for actual Thanksgiving and the girls helped make some pumpkin pie. The Erpeldings graciously invited us over for a delicious Thanksgiving dinner and we had a great time watching all the kids play dress up, romp around, dance and perform musical skits.

DECEMBER:

The Christmas season was a blast with the girls this year since they were more aware of Christmas traditions and were better able to participate this year. Some of our Christmas festivities included a few live nativities, gingerbread house making, cookie decorating, meeting Frosty and Rudolph at the MV Santa’s Village, meeting Santa at Pretend City, and hanging out with the Smiths at the Newport Beach Light Parade. I officially became a real mom when I handed over my SUV to Jake and we got our first minivan!

The girls received American Girl Bitty Baby dolls and accessories for Christmas and have been busy taking good care of their babies ever since.

Our last excursion of 2015 was well spent at the zoo with cousins Jack, Eleri and Rhys, Grammy and Grandpa.

Phew… and that’s a wrap! We were blessed to have good health and a wonderful year and are so grateful for all the family and friends with whom we were able to enjoy it! Farewell to an action-packed 2015 and we are looking forward to a sweet (and likely more chaotic) 2016!

2014 Year in Review

In looking back over 2014, I can hardly believe my eyes! Everyone tells you how much your baby will change in the first year  (if I had a dime for every time someone told me to enjoy it because it goes by fast…), but I wasn’t prepared for how quickly the second year would fly by and how much the girls would change.  I blinked and S and A were suddenly three feet tall and talking, climbing, running and actually sharing OPINIONS. It’s scary and exciting at the same time!
I wanted to keep this recap short by posting one picture to recap each month in 2014, but let’s get real…we both know there’s no way that’s going to happen. Here’s my best attempt at concisely summarizing (ha!) our year. And what an amazing year it was!
January: Happy New Year!
We ended our holiday stay in Utah with lots of football.
At 10 months, the girls were interacting with each other more, actively climbing around the park for the first time, and getting into lots of trouble at home thanks to their newfound motor skills.
I couldn’t recap January without including pictures of our messy eaters! There’s 10,000 more food pictures where this came from.
February: we celebrated Grandpa’s 60th birthday in style with a huge surprise party.
S and A celebrated their first Valentine’s Day, enjoyed visiting with Grandma and Grandpa and spent many afternoons at the park swinging.
March: The big ONE!

I can’t speak for all my slaves party helpers, but it was a blast putting S and A’s Baby Love first birthday party together and we were so grateful to celebrate it with family and friends. Jake and I were especially grateful to have survived the first year. Self high-five!

S and A’s first taste mouthful of cake. Samantha started walking and Amelia followed suit a few weeks later, bringing on a whole new level of crazy.

April: We celebrated my birthday and the girls loved meeting the Easter Bunny and hunting for eggs.

May: My second Mother’s Day, a visit from Grandma, the girls’ first haircut, first train ride, and many days at the beach, thanks to the beautiful weather.

June: The girls, Grandma and I threw Allison’s Ahoy It’s a Boy Baby Shower in preparation for Baby Noah. Can you say sugar overload?
2014 was defintely a year of ups and downs and arguably our lowest point of the year was Samantha’s one night hospital stay. We were so glad she was fine and the girls were so happy to be reunited after a day apart.
After a rough start to June, we had a relaxing month playing at the beach, hanging out with friends at the park, celebrating with Marisa at her graduation, enjoying Father’s Day, and walking Bandit.

The girls experienced the splash pad for the first time, began swimming lessons and gymnastics class, and we got creative keeping the girls occupied at home…

July: The girls toured the neighborhood in style on the Fourth of July, got their first tattoos, caught candy being thrown at the parade, went swimming and fell fast asleep before the fireworks began.

Grandpa came to visit, we celebrated Jake’s birthday, the girls discovered the joys of digging holes in the sand, began perfecting their use of utensils and worked on Jackson Pollock-inspired masterpieces at home.

Our friends from Utah came to visit and the girls had a blast giving them tours of the park and beach.

Cousin Noah arrived and the girls couldn’t stop saying “Baby!”

August: The girls enjoyed ice cream sandwiches at Grandma and Grandpa’s house in Utah and caught up with cousins.

While in Utah, we attended my ten-year high school reunion, and the girls enjoyed the park, water park, riding horses, and rolling down the hill in Grandma and Grandpa’s backyard.

On part two of our road trip, we visited family in Idaho and stayed at their vacation condo in Sun Valley. The girls were spoiled silly and were doted upon by all their cousins.

September: Aunt Sarah and Grandma stopped by for a short visit and the girls were stoked that the college football season had officially begun. S and A’s language skills took off like crazy and they began adding tons of new words/putting words together.

Fall officially began with several visits to the pumpkin patch and train rides at the Irvine Park Railroad.

The girls and I had fun at home with tot school activities, artwork, and neighborhood playdates. The girls also began music class, continued with gymnastics, and began Montessori Spanish class.

We tried to beat the stifling heat by spending our afternoons at the splash pad, pool and playing with our water table.

October:  Weekend getaway to the San Diego Wild Animal park with the Nguyens.
Still hot weather– Samantha took lathering on that sunscreen to heart.
We picked out more pumpkins with the girls’ twin friends, celebrated the girls’ 19 month birthday, and witnessed many giggle fests and wrestling matches.
Halloween 2014: S and A dressed up as Madeline and showed off their costumes at the gym, church, and neighborhood parties.
Samantha, Amelia, Maliyah and Allie’s Halloween playdate:

The girls stayed up past their bedtime to go trick-or-treating for the first time and totally killed it!

November: After two attempts on separate days, we finally captured a few decent family pictures with the girls smiling. A huge triumph!

November was filled with sister hugs, beach days (we had a few really hot days clear into November!), hiking excursions and playdates with Great Grandpa and cousins. Samantha discovered her penchant for art,  S and A spent hours pushing their dollies around in their strollers and cooking us gourmet meals in their play kitchen.
These girls were just too silly!
On Thanksgiving, we ran the Dana Point Turkey Trot.
We then celebrated the rest of Thanksgiving with cousins at Aunt Linda and Uncle David’s and the girls went wild exploring the desert.

December: Five Santa visits!

Our 25 Days of Toddler Christmas included throwing a neighborhood Christmas toddler party, holiday baking, riding the Irvine Christmas Train, seeing the lights, riding the carousel and decorating our tree. We also managed to fit in the girls’ first balloon ride and celebrated Great Grandpa’s 85th birthday.

Having fun with the guinea pigs and ponies (NOT the ostriches) at Zoomars.

We made it to Utah and the girls built their first snowman. Sledding lasted for about five minutes until they couldn’t stand the cold anymore.

Amelia went crazy opening (everyone’s) presents on Christmas Day.
The girls’ second Christmas was truly magical!

We were blessed more than we could have ever imagined in 2014 and can’t wait to see how much the girls will grow and change in 2015. It’s going to be an epic year!
Lots of love,

2013 in Review

2013…what a year it’s been!
January 2013
Since he was too busy with work over Christmas and couldn’t come out with my mom and sister, my dad flew out in January to help put together the nursery. Jake and my dad worked non-stop, day and night putting up the wainscoting, trim and painting, as per my directions! At 7 months pregnant and on modified bed rest, my contributions to the nursery included sitting on my rocking chair and giving morale support whilst ordering nursery decor from Etsy.
Good thing my dad was here when this pipe in the nursery wall blew! We didn’t even know there was a leak at first until I noticed the kitchen wall downstairs was wet. We had to evacuate to a hotel for a few days while the downstairs walls were torn out and dried. What a mess! At least the leak didn’t ruin the new wood floor Jake had meticulously installed in the nursery.
Despite all the hang-ups from the pipe leak, the nursery turned out so beautifully!
Pretty much everyone in my family contributed some manual labor to creating the twins’ nursery. Jake laid down the floors, painted, installed closet doors/a closet organizer, installed trim, lighting, wainscoting and crown molding (with my dad’s help), my mom restored this old dresser of my grandmother’s to become the centerpiece of the nursery, and my mom and sister helped paint and style the nursery.
February 2013
Baby shower time! My friends threw me a fun shower and my cousin, Allison, took my ideas for an owl-themed shower and went way overboard putting together the cutest shower in the history of twins.
Me at eight months pregnant with Aunt Linda and Aunt Annie. Ugh….just looking at this picture gives me horrible memories of feeling HUGE and UNCOMFORTABLE.
By the end of February and all those showers, I pretty much had enough clothing to open my own baby store.
For about ten days in February, we lived at a hotel while our kitchen was being remodeled downstairs, thanks to that pipe leak back in January. Sensing he was about to be demoted to family dog instead of first child, Bandit showed signs of puppy regression.
March 2013
Our kitchen…literally a week before the twins were born. Talk about nesting!
Making progress…Jake was still installing our new appliances and the tile back-splash the week after the twins were born!
March 11, 2013…the day our lives changed forever. At 36 weeks, I had reached the goal set by our perinatologist and it was time for these identical twinnies to greet the world.
After going in for our scheduled induction, nothing was happening 12 hours after being induced. We went ahead with a c-section and a few minutes later, we met our girls!
Baby A…Samantha Darlene. Born at 12:12 p.m., 6 pounds 9 ounces, 18.5 inches.
Baby B…Amelia Jean. Born at 12:14 p.m., 5 pounds 8 ounces, 17.5 inches.
The rest of March was a blur of feeding, diapering, bathing, dressing, cuddling, swaddling, and learning how in the world to take care of TWO babies who needed and wanted our attention. My mom stayed until the end of March to help with everything during the day so that Jake and I could be rested enough to do the night shift. Every 2.5-3 hours I was breastfeeding the twins, then handing them off to be bottle fed since they weren’t great suckers, and then pumping. By the time we were finished with a round of feeding, we only had maybe an hour and a half until we had to do it all over again.
I have never experienced such sleep deprivation in my life…it was pretty torturous most nights. Jake and I were both so grumpy all the time! I think back to that period of time and wonder how in the world we did it. Thankfully, the twins were growing amazingly well and we had so much help from family and friends to get us through. If there is one thing I learned this month, it was that it takes a village to care for twins! This was also a month of visitors. My family all came out, as well as tons of friends from across the state.
The twins’ first Easter!
April 2013
One word describes this month: SURVIVAL. We were still on the three-hour feeding schedule, and by this point, the adrenaline and excitement of being new parents had worn off, resulting in two extremely irritable and tired parents. Maybe BRUTAL would have been a better term for April.
The girls were opening their eyes more and I loved to see their little expressions. They were particularly amused by our ceiling fan.
I couldn’t have done it without Super Dad! Jake was able to work from home some days, which was fabulous, even though he didn’t get much work done.
We celebrated the girls’ 1 month birthday! We also celebrated my 27th birthday, but I don’t even remember what we did. I was probably so tired that I slept right through it.
Despite the sleep deprivation, it was hard not to fall madly in love with these two little angels.
Amelia’s first smile!
Jake’s mom came into town for a week to give us a much-needed break. She painted an owl mural in our nursery, which the girls and I absolutely love. We also took a little outing to Laguna Beach with her and the twins. After Jake’s mom left, reality started setting in about what it would be like without help,  so we ended up hiring a mother’s helper, (coincidentally named Amelia). She was a lifesaver.
May 2013
Still on an insane three-hour breastfeeding-bottle feeding-pumping schedule. Since the girls still weren’t very proficient at breastfeeding, I stopped nursing them at the end of May and started just pumping/bottle feeding with milk and formula. This gave me back some much-needed energy/time/sanity in my day!
Jake’s sister, Juliette (a mom of TWO sets of twins), came out from Colorado to help with the girls. She made us a month’s worth of freezer meals and was a huge lifesaver! We took a few outings to the beach while she was here.
My first Mother’s Day! My family came into town for the twins’ blessing, which we also had on Mother’s Day. Jake did a fantastic job giving unique blessings for each twin and afterwards, we had a nice brunch with family and friends back at our place. Best Mother’s Day ever!
We celebrated the girls’ 2 month birthday!
Grandma stayed a few extra days in May and we enjoyed an outing at the beach. We were super depressed when she had to leave.
June 2013
The girls practiced tummy time more and more everyday and were getting really strong! While our helper, Amelia, was wonderful, she had to travel a long ways to get to us and couldn’t continue working on a reliable schedule. We ended up finding a local lady, Ana, to come more often, and we just love her! She still comes once a week to this day. Definitely worth the financial sacrifice, even though this will be my Christmas/birthday present for the next twenty years. Even with outside help, taking care of the twins day in and day out was nothing short of exhausting. By the end of the day, I would have both girls cuddling on the bed with me while I tried to keep their tears/screaming at bay until Jake came home to save the day.
The girls’ 3 month birthday!
First Father’s Day!
Such little personalities!
Amelia had this way of staring into your soul.
Jake and I took a little day trip to San Clemente and had a picnic at the beach with the girls.
From the beginning, Amelia was such a silly one. She loved to smile and dance.
Samantha was a little bit more serious.
July 2013
Great-Grandpa came over a few times for some summer barbecues and to help make the twins laugh.
We enjoyed many evening walks and trips to the park.
Our first mini vacation! For the Fourth of July, we went to San Diego and watched the fireworks from out hotel room.  It was a lot easier staying at a hotel with the girls than I had imagined, and the girls seemed to enjoy the change of scenery. The girls even started sleeping through the night, until about 4 a.m. on our trip.
Grandma and Grandpa couldn’t stand not seeing the twins any longer, so they drove here from Utah randomly one weekend! We barbecued and went to the beach in the short time they were here.
Amelia continued to make us laugh with her antics.
We celebrated the girls’ 4 month birthday!
The girls were sitting up more this month.
The girls impressed us with their growing intellectual curiosity.
We celebrated Jake’s 32nd birthday!
I discovered one of the perks of having twins…dressing them up in identical outfits.

August 2013

In August, Samantha got a Doc Band helmet to help correct the flat spot on her head which developed as a result of being Baby A and being squished in utero by Amelia. It took a few days to adjust and I was really nervous about how she would take it, but Samantha did amazingly well and didn’t seem to mind.

Jake’s niece, Maddy, visited us all the way from Alaska and was a great helper. It was so much easier going to the beach with a third person to help out!

Baby Olympics! I won, of course.
Many summer evenings were spent at the park.

We celebrated the girls’ 5 month birthday!

The girls’ first trip to Utah! Jake drove us out and then flew back to Cali to go on a scout trip to the High Sierras. The girls enjoyed hanging out with the rest of the family, but missed Daddy so much!

Sad Amelia.
Happy Amelia.

I learned a lot on our first long road trip with the girls…mainly not to pack as much crap! Keeping them on a schedule was impossible while on vacation, which made for more than a few cranky spells. While the girls had been sleeping through the night for the past month, after our trip, their schedule was out of whack and it took a while to get back to normal.

The girls weren’t too impressed with their first time in a kiddie pool.
September 2013
September was HOT, so we took full advantage by bringing the girls to the pool.
We spent a lot of time at the park in September.
Toward the end of September, we started our solid-feeding adventure. For the most part, the girls were very excited to try new foods.
And even more excited to make a mess!
The girls got to hang out with their pal, Maliyah.
More and more independent each day.
We celebrated the girls’ 6 month birthday! The girls had been sitting up on their own for several weeks.

October 2013
We celebrated the girls’ 7 month birthday!
Nothing beats going walking with Daddy.
Grandma came into town and with her help, we put together our 1920s-inspired outfits for a Halloween costume party we attended.
Grandpa and Aunt Sarah couldn’t resist staying behind in Utah, so they drove out and we all went to the girls’ first pumpkin patch together.
First Halloween as Thing 1 and Thing 2!
November 2013
The girls began demanding finger foods instead of pureed foods.
Despite the somewhat chillier weather, we still made it to the park every day. It was a lot harder to contain them now that they were crawling (mostly backwards).
Some days were downright summery.
The girls were getting into everything!

Samantha and Amelia both started standing and pulling themselves up on furniture and toys.
My days were kept busy playing with the girls and constantly pulling them away from stuff they weren’t supposed to get into.

We celebrated their 8 month birthday!
The girls’ second road trip to Utah and their first Thanksgiving!

December 2013
The girls had been crawling for a few months already, but in December, they really got quick!
The girls loved pulling themselves up on the stair gate and waving hello.

First time on the baby swings.

The girls loved all things slide-y.

First time in the sand at the beach!
Getting into everything and anything.
Another road trip to Utah and the girls’ first Christmas! Pictures of Christmas Day, celebrating their 9 month birthday and celebrating our 7th wedding anniversary to come…
2013 has been the most crazy, exhausting, eye-opening, difficult and incredible/fantastic year ever! Here’s to an even more amazing 2014!
Lots of love,
