Adventure Parks

Part of our summer bucket list includes visiting some of the parks we’ve never been to in the area. We recently told Samantha and Amelia that we were going to the Adventure Park in Irvine, but when we didn’t end up being able to go that day, I was badgered with pleas of  “Adventure Park! Adventure Park!” for the better part of a week until we finally found the time to go. Gotta hand it to them for making up a name that proved irresistible to kids!

The Adventure Park was one of those designated “nature play” zones. There were some traditional play structures, but most of the park was designed to let kids run around and get messy.  I guess they think our Orange County kids aren’t getting enough exposure to actual nature or adventure…

The park had a giant lego building area and random manipulative scattered around.

IMG_3129 IMG_3126

The uncomfortable-looking cement slide was a favorite.

IMG_3124

For obvious reasons, the most popular attraction at the park was the giant mud pit. There were kids of all ages (babies!) romping barefoot in the mud, slinging it with glee and scooping it up with giant tonka trucks the park provided.

I had heard about the mud pit and came prepared with a change of clothes for the girls, assuming that, given their penchant for puddle-stomping, they would head straight for the mud. Instead, they wanted absolutely nothing to do with it and looked at me like I was crazy when I told them to go jump in.

It saved me a massive clean-up effort, but I was slightly disappointed at the loss of good picture opportunities it would have afforded! Have I instilled my OCD-ness on them?

The other day, Amelia and Samantha jumped in the front seat of the minivan and pretended to drive, turn on music, etc. Amelia turned to Samantha with a bottle of hand sanitizer and yelled, “PUT ON THIS HAND SANITIZER, SAMMY!” There’s nothing like your kids impersonating you for you to realize what you must sound like!

Just outside of the “Adventure” portion was a traditional park with lots of play equipment and fields. The girls enjoyed the non-adventure part of the park the best. Sigh.

Regular old swings. Oldies but goodies.

Meredith was along for the ride and was fascinated by it all.

Another park we visited recently was the Lake Forest Sports Park, which was hosting a Dino Days event the day we went. I was tempted to stay for their outdoor showing of Jurassic Park, but the animatronic dinosaurs were already a little freaky for them. Amelia, in her most woeful voice, told me after watching one of the robot velociraptors tear open a piece of robot animal flesh that she was, “Definitely going to remember this tonight.”

No night terrors occurred, but I don’t want to make going to bed any harder than it is already.

Rainbow snow cones make even the most vicious dinosaur encounters a little bit happier.

Ode to Hopscotch

One of the many things I’d like to remember about the twins at three years is their penchant for hopscotch. “Draw me a hopscotch, mommy!” is a common refrain around here and I always oblige since it never fails to provide ten minutes of free and hilarious entertainment for me.

I think it’s safe to say that Amelia won the hopscotch battle this time around.

Father’s Day 2016

In true Super Dad fashion, Jake kicked off Father’s Day weekend with a Daddy/Twin pizza date night while I was at a mom’s night out self defense class!

IMG_3182

Mom power! Our instructor was the twins’ friend, Parker’s, tae kwon do teacher and he was not only motivating, but gave us a great workout. I was late and only got there for the last half of the class, but am still sore from all the kickboxing.

IMG_0252

We visited the “Sprayground” in Laguna Niguel to cool off from the scorching heat this weekend.

IMG_3210

Love you, sis.

IMG_3213 IMG_3216

We only stayed a short time because it was just too hot for Meredith.

IMG_3228

I booked a much-deserved massage for Jake for the afternoon and then it was back in the water to cool off, this time at Great Grandpa’s pool.

IMG_3246

Great Grandpa enjoyed a little brag book we made him with pictures of Meredith.

IMG_3241

Meredith dipped her toes in the pool for the first time and loved it, until the twins started splashing her, at which point I whisked her away to safety.

IMG_3237

Cowabunga! Belly flops never seem to faze Samantha.

IMG_3235

Meredith desperately wanted back in the pool.

IMG_3247

A rare cranky moment saying bye to Great Grandpa.

IMG_3252

Thanks to the infamous SUV pool crash, our neighborhood pool is still out of commission. Our community pool up the street has been closed since October for renovations, but just barely opened again this weekend, thankfully.

IMG_3257

Super Dad. IMG_3263 IMG_3260

Amelia found some kind of beetle swimming with her. While all the other kids were screaming, she just picked it up and brought it to me.

IMG_3269

Meredith loves to watch the girls swim, but sure wishes she could join in. Maybe in a few months!

IMG_3264

We barbecued ribs and after church, we called Super Grandpa and Super Great Grandpa to wish them a happy day. The girls helped wrap some gifts we bought Jake, as well as the gifts they made.

IMG_3281

It’s already pretty obvious that Meredith loves her Daddy more than me. Her face lights up and she starts giggling uncontrollably whenever he comes into the room. How did we get three hopelessly smitten daddy’s girls?

IMG_3294 IMG_3285

Lots of fun and messes were involved in the making of these projects this week.

IMG_3287 IMG_3289

Jake’s favorite gift was Amelia and Samantha’s candid responses to a Daddy Questionnaire. My favorite response was Amelia saying that Daddy’s favorite thing to do was to “get a new ring for Mommy.” ??? Honestly have no idea where that came from, unless Jake has a surprise in store for me… ha! Their responses were interesting glances into their little heads. You can tell from sweet Amelia’s responses that she’s always thinking of others (sometimes when Jake takes her on errands for a little date, they bring back drinks or snacks for the rest of us, per Amelia’s request).

IMG_3291

I also like that many of Samantha’s responses had something to do with her.

IMG_3290

Jake truly is our Super Dad hero and we don’t know what we would do without him! Hard to believe that last Father’s Day, it was just us four (although technically, Meredith was there too, since I had just found out I was pregnant with her that holiday).

Ray of Sunshine Meredith

Lately on Sunday mornings, we’ve been trying to take some pictures of Meredith since I’ve realized I have far less documentation of her than I do of the twins during each stage. She is such a smiley, happy, giggly baby!

I give you… baby in a basket.

Surprise!

IMG_3058 (1)

Yo.

IMG_3055

We are working on sitting up unassisted.

IMG_3074

I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!

IMG_3075

That’s going to take some serious core work to get back up, guys.

IMG_3079

Blue steel.

IMG_3077

A little help from the Boppy.

Hold up. Per my union contract, I’m entitled to a five minute break.
