Tidepooling at Crystal Cove

Now that the tourists are mostly gone and most local kids are back to school, we’ve been going to the beach again! I took the girls to Crystal Cove on a weekday to look for creatures in the tide pools and we had the entire place to ourselves.

This was definitely worth waiting until the end of summer for:

It’s a bit of a hike down to the beach, but so worth it. Going back up is a different story.

Even though we timed it perfectly for low tide, we were disappointed to not find very many creatures this time around. We saw urchins and crabs, but no starfish. The girls didn’t care and entertained themselves poking the poor, squishy anemones endlessly.

Jump!

As per the usual, Meredith just wanted snacks the entire time. “Nack! Nack” is her most consistent phrase. I just took her in for her 18 month appointment and she’s officially three feet tall, 110% percentile for height and 95% for weight. If it weren’t for her lack of language skills, she could pass for a 2.5 year old, not 1.5.

Meredith can be a handful, but whenever I start complaining, I look back at what it was like to corral two toddlers all day. I honestly don’t know how I ever made it out with both of them at this age. Maybe they had a lot less energy than Meredith? Those days are hazy in my memory, but somehow we made it work… I remember using leashes on both of them!

Put me doooooown!

Samantha found all sorts of cool rocks and shells, which we couldn’t take with us, but she loved to feel them anyways.

While Samantha explored the tide pools, Meredith snacked/chased seagulls, and Amelia mostly hung out by herself building sandcastles. She was not a fan of the cold ocean water that day.

Fortunately for us, Jake played hooky for an hour and came to visit us. Everyone flocked to Daddy immediately and attached themselves to him like barnacles.

Searching for sea creatures.

The perfect spot to build their castle:

Amelia joined at the last minute and claimed Samantha’s castle as her own.

And that’s where the fun ended. Despite cheering them on and helping them think positive by likening them unto the Little Engine That Could, the girls complained, cried, and scowled as they dragged themselves all the way up the hill. I think I can… I think I can…

C’mon, guys! THIS IS NOT THE OREGON TRAIL.

Beaching and Jeeping

While Grammy and Grandpa were in town for the twins’ birthdays and Disneyland, we had two Open Houses at our house and needed to be out for several hours. It was so much easier cleaning and getting everyone out with the extra help, especially after being used to doing it all myself whenever we had showings during the week. Sometimes, I’ve had to have the place passably clean and the kids out with only an hour’s notice, and have been so stressed out!

One weekend during our Open House, we spent the afternoon at Dana Point and the Ocean Institute, where the girls touched starfish and other sea creatures, toured a pirate ship and learned all about whales, while Meredith ran around the park and ate. And ate. And ate.

On her third course for lunch.

Ready to start paddleboarding.

The weekend after Disneyland during another Open House, we had a picnic and beach afternoon at Marina Park in Newport Beach. I’ve been wanting to check out this park/beach for a while now, but Newport is about 30 minutes away for us, as opposed to Dana Point, Laguna and some of the other beaches that are much closer for us. It was definitely worth the extra drive, with a wide, spacious green space, awesome nautical themed playground, and a beach right on the playground that was so perfect for little kids. The beach had no waves and calm water, just like Baby Beach in Dana Point, only this one was much cleaner! We will be back!

Meredith’s first time walking into the ocean herself!

She immediately plopped down and got soaked. I could barely stand getting my feet wet– so cold!

Like a moth to the flame, Meredith was drawn to a bouncy house someone had set up.

Coppertone baby beach bum!

The twins are playground connoisseurs and gave this one two big thumbs up.

Before Grammy and Grandpa left back to Utah, the twins spent the morning racing cars on the amazing Magic Trax race car set from Grammy and Grandpa and showing off their driving skills.

Safari with Meredith.

Waving to her adoring public.

It was a rough week adjusting back to our routine after a week and a half of non-stop birthday celebrations, beach adventures, Disneyland and having Grammy and Grandpa around to help out and join in the fun. The week after, everyone was sick, cranky, sleep-deprived, off-schedule, and complaining about preschool being “boring.” With all the excitement, I fear we’ve created thrill junkies and are going to have to get them used to normal life again!

Meredith 8 Months

Meredith’s 8th month was full of firsts and fun!

img_0370

Samantha, Amelia and Meredith at 8 months. Meredith is really looking like her own person these days. It’s so fun comparing these three– they are so different! If you’re in need of a laugh, check out Samantha and Amelia at 8 months here.  Good times (and I can’t believe Samantha was crawling so well by her 8 month birthday– Meredith isn’t even close)!

picmonkey-collage8months

Unfortunately, there will probably be no more milestone block pictures with the correct numbers on them as Meredith loves to occupy herself eating/swiping/throwing them during picture time.

img_0365

Who, me?

img_0398img_0366

Meredith is HUGE and sported 12-18 (and sometimes 24) month clothes. She started dropping the 3rd nap (Hallelujah!) and slept 11-12 hours at night.

img_0379

img_2775

Firsts included Meredith’s first bike ride, first trip to San Diego, first time swimming in the pool, first Utes game, and, sadly, her first time rolling off the bed! Good thing she’s a tough one.

Meredith started eating finger foods regularly, and my time spent cleaning increased exponentially. Guess it couldn’t be worse than the twins at this age.

Meredith ate Cheerios like there was no tomorrow! She also loved sweet potato, squash, pasta, avocado, green beans, broccoli and cauliflower.

img_0184 img_0936

PRUNES AGAIN?

img_5084

Meredith devoured 8 pieces of pita bread at Panini Cafe and I was so afraid she was going to get so constipated! I don’t know where it all went, but she was fine. Note the seven tons of basmati rice all over the floor. Understandably, bus boys flee when they see us coming into restaurants.

img_5225

Meredith’s excursions also included visiting Great Grandpa, co-hosting Allison’s baby shower, chilling at the beach, going raspberry and apple picking, swinging (ALL THE TIME), playing at home, and hanging out at the park with sisters. Meredith also goes along for the ride to the girls’ gymnastics, dance and soccer practices and can’t wait for the day she can join in.

Now that Meredith is more mobile and interactive, Samantha and Amelia have a blast playing with her and keeping her entertained. She is absolutely bored to tears when they are at preschool and looks at me like, “WHERE IS MY ENTERTAINMENT?”

img_2460 img_2412

Meredith and Maple enviously watched the big kids roast s’mores at the pool.

img_0926

img_0934 img_0930  img_0881

Samantha and Amelia are awesome with Meredith and treat her like their own little dolly. Seriously, they get 5 stars all around. It’s cute to see how nurturing and caring they are with her, and they’ve become so much more responsible and grown up as a result. Their favorite thing is to tell all the kids at school (and strangers at the park) that they have a “baby sister named Meredith who is 8 months old.”   Out of the blue, sometimes they’ll say, “I LOVE my baby sister!” and I melt into a puddle.

img_0160

“Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth…because I’m happyyyyyyy!”

img_2812

I find it hilarious to contrast Meredith with the girls at each stage.

img_8465

Thinking back to the first year, I always tell people all I remember is 365 days of crying, but I do sometimes wonder if I’m exaggerating about how hard it was. Looking back at pictures confirmed my memories! It was rough!

img_8357

I NEED A SHOULDER TO CRY ON.

img_8355

Occassionally, the twins were in good moods. Like every 1 out of 250 pictures.

img_7991

No one ever accused Samantha of being skinny.

img_8143

Samantha the Grump at 8 months.

img_7649

I WILL NOT SMILE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE.

img_7749

It’s hard to believe I used to have nothing else to do but chill at the park and watch these two play. Now Meredith is the one observing the chaos.

img_7763

Good times at the park!

img_7731

Like the twins, Meredith enjoys the outdoors and wiggles her whole body when I put her in her stroller or Ergo because she knows an outing is coming. She’s just like Bandit!

img_0387

Meredith started completely rejecting purees this month and pretty much grabbed the spoon out of my hand whenever I would try to feed her. She would either attempt to feed herself, or demand finger foods. Let’s just say it’s been an epically messy month. Bandit was not complaining.

img_0368

img_0358

Meredith loves to engage with people and makes friends wherever she goes. The teachers at the girls’ preschool remarked one day at how it brightens their day to see her in the morning. Whenever I walk or jog with her. it’s funny to see the smiles on bikers or joggers coming the opposite way– for a split second, I always think they are saying hi to me, when I realize that Meredith must be giggling at them.  img_0331

Still no teeth or crawling this month. Meredith’s preferred mode of transportation was rolling. Nighttime sleep took a little bit of a downhill detour once she started rolling all over the place in her sleep and woke up disoriented.

img_2835

Still, I can’t complain. She is a sweetheart and full of personality. Love you, Mer Bear!

Carlsbad Getaway and Legoland

The week before Labor Day, Samantha and Amelia’s school had a break before the fall session, so we took off for a few days for a short end-of-summer getaway.

We rented the cutest beach cottage in Carlsbad, named Seaside Cottage, just a few minutes to the ocean. The owners were so thoughtful, and even left presents of Lego Duplo ice cream trucks for the twins, and a baby ball toy for Meredith.img_2519

BUNK BEDS. The twins were in heaven.

img_0902

When I saw the backyard online, I knew this was the rental for us. It lived up to the alluring pictures as the girls were occupied playing in the backyard nonstop. We just have a patio at home and are used to walking to the park to get everyone’s energy out, so much like staying at Grammy’s in Utah, this was a nice change for us.

Cute teepee.

img_2555

img_2524

The rental originally belonged to the owner’s grandmother and they had a fun history of the house framed on the inside; it was originally purchased by the owner’s grandmother after WWII for just $10,000 with the GI Bill.  Crazy to think it’s worth over $1 million now!

The twins adored their bunk bed room, while Meredith enjoyed sleeping in the owner’s pack n play in our room.

img_0909

img_0923

The rental had a high chair, stroller, toys, bikes and all the beach gear we could ask for. We didn’t have to bring any baby gear with us, which was so nice for a change!

Carlsbad isn’t a hotspot for tourists, like Laguna Beach closer to us is, so everything felt very low-key and relaxing.

The present the rental owners left for Meredith has become her favorite toy of all time.

img_2487

Can’t get enough of that face.

img_2489  img_4965

While the beach and hanging out at the rental were fun, the main event for the twins was their favorite theme park, which they talk about constantly at home, and somehow manage to weave into their bedtime stories. Jake took the twins for an all-day Daddy-Daughter Legoland date, while I relaxed with Meredith.

One of our favorite parts of the trip was biking. The rental had beach cruisers and a trailer in which to tow the twins. We brought our own baby seat for Meredith. Meredith loved her first bike ride!

img_2439 img_2435

I am not the best at balancing (just ask Jake what it’s like to ride with me on a tandem), but riding with Meredith on the cruiser was surprisingly easy.

Our getaway was just long enough to have a break from the day-to-day routine, but quick enough that we weren’t going crazy by the end of it. We’ve found our new go-to beach rental and hope to make it to Seaside Cottage again soon!

Lots of love,
