December Happenings

In December, Meredith geared up for Christmas decked out in her hand-me-down holiday outfits from the twins and spread the Christmas cheer!

Meredith couldn’t make up her mind whether to be naughty or nice this December! We rarely went on an outing without some kind of throwdown… even preschool drop-off had turned into a nightmare because Meredith refused to leave and would regularly throw herself down on the ground, kicking and screaming.

I never take her to the store anymore, unless it’s an absolute emergency because she always manages to make some kind of spectacle. In December, I was at Target with her when she started tantruming in the check-out line over the fact that I was putting the various candy bars and random items she had thrown into the cart back on the shelf. Restraining her in the cart seatbelt is impossible and she can climb out of the cart herself, so I was left with little option but to scurry out of there once I was done with the self-check out. A kind soul felt pity for me and offered to escort me to my car, pushing my cart for me, while I held a kicking and screaming Meredith under my arms like a football so that she wouldn’t be able to kick my stomach! Once in the car, it was another 20 minutes before I could restrain her in her carseat. She is SO stubborn, this one!

Not so cheery today.

Elfie returned and while his hiding spots mostly included climbing candy-cane striped pipe cleaners and literally sitting on shelves, the girls thought his antics were hilarious! They didn’t even seem to mind that he stayed in the same spot for several days in a row (no one ever told them the actual rules, so our elf goes at his own pace).

The twins chatting before their holiday dance and yoga recital.

The twins had just barely moved up into the 5-7 year old class and tried their best to keep up! We had Mele Kalikimaka in our head for weeks.

The girls were mostly excited about the recital because they got to wear a little makeup and received a rose and Yogurtland afterwards.

Sammy the reindeer pulls the sleigh.

Cheese!

I am terrible at any kind of construction project and cringe at the thought of putting together gingerbread houses, but this train wasn’t so hard.

Practicing their ice skating skills.

Checking out the camels and other animals at the live nativity in our city.

Jake was elected to the Board of Directors for our city and enjoyed texting me pictures of his picture in the office whenever he had a board meeting.

We had some warm days in December, which meant doing basically the same thing we do every day… going to the park.

Starfish!

Biking to the orange grove.

Lemons and limes, yum!

The girls rarely wait until we get home to try out their spoils. The blood oranges and clementines here are super juicy, and I rarely buy oranges at the grocery store anymore.

More sunny December days and park shenanigans.

Amelia on a random Daddy-Daughter date to the sporting goods store.

We’ve got a crazy on the loose in the orange grove!

Speaking of crazy, Meredith is a Little Miss Bossy Pants! Poor Bandit!

The Month of Halloween

By the time Halloween finally rolled around, the month had seemed never-ending! I don’t know when Halloween turned into Christmas, but it seemed like there was something Halloween-related going on every day of October. We were pretty selective with the activities we did end up doing, but we still felt sick of Halloween by the time it got to the actual holiday!

Decorating pumpkins at preschool:

As the Room Mom, I helped out with this activity, and man, was painting pumpkins with 20 preschoolers stressful! I had to go home and take a nap afterwards.

Earlier in the month I had helped out Amelia’s class with a monster craft.

Halloween dress rehearsal for Meredith.

Preschool Harvest Party. Amelia just loves her teacher, Miss Becky.

The school’s Harvest Party always features a bunch of games, and this year, Samantha won a beta fish by successfully tossing a ping pong ball into the fish bowl. She named the fish Vivian and a month later we ended up getting it two new friends, who recently died after Jake changed the water too quickly and they went into shock. Vivian remains the lone survivor.

Decorating cupcakes with friends.

As a Room Mom, one of our biggest events of the year is the Annual Dinner. The most stressful part is constantly bugging everyone for donations to our class basket, which is then auctioned off at the dinner, as well as finding restaurants and people with connections to donate higher-ticket items for the live auction. We spent the better part of two months planning it, and I’m pretty sure other parents were avoiding me by the end since they were so sick of me bugging them for donations, but this year’s  rodeo-themed dinner ended up being a hit!

The Hamilton tickets Jake was able to get donated from a vendor of his firm went for the highest price of any item during the auction, and I was happy to have finally won the bid for one of the class platters (each class decorates a platter with their thumbprints and some kind of design– parents are always fighting over them). I also won the “Family Fun Night” class gift basket which included a bunch of movies, board games, a snuggly blanket, a popcorn maker, and pizza gift cards. Amelia made me promise to win one of the most popular items– an ice cream social with Miss Becky and three friends, but I was outbid by one of the other Room Moms. There’s always next year!

Phi and Sarahs’ kids don’t go to our preschool, but they were nice enough to support our school, buy tickets and join us for date night. So fun to to have them there!

This is the closest Jake has to anything cowboy themed in his wardrobe.

Jake’s back was killing him for days, but he said it was worth it.

Our town does a Harvest Celebration and I’m not sure exactly what it entailed since Jake took the girls while I… napped? Got stuff done? I don’t remember. But the girls came back looking like enjoyed the carnival. And since I’m not a huge fan of carnivals, it worked out well for everyone.

On another random Daddy Daughter Excursion, Jake decided to take the girls to Chuck E. Cheese of all places. They always come back from school talking about it (I’m assuming it’s a favorite amongst the other preschoolers), but the girls had never been. Finally, their dream came true!

It was everything they had hoped for and more. Except they never really talked about it again and haven’t said anything about wanting to go back, so that’s a win for me since I don’t really want to go there.

Finger-lickin’ bbq chicken!

On Halloween morning, the twins had a preschool field trip to Zoomars. Since I chaperoned last year’s field trip, Jake took over on this one, but I decided to drive over there with Meredith at the last minute since we didn’t have any plans that morning anyway. It was the best of both worlds– we all got to hang out, but I didn’t have to ride the bus! I felt kind of bad thinking about Jake’s very long legs being squished into those tiny bus seats, but I had to suffer through last year, so it was his turn!

Who says I need to be in preschool to crash this field trip?

Meredith wanted to cuddle/ride/pet/hug every single animal.

Poor goats!

Some of the preschoolers were nervous about riding the pony, but not Meredith!

Who is the kid with the aviator glasses and bomber jacket?!

Meredith was kicked out of the guinea pig petting area for continually picking them up wrong and tossing them!

Meanwhile, the twins were so nice and gentle to those poor guinea pigs. They spent an hour in here and thus didn’t have time to ride the pony.

Samantha and Claire with their cuddly guinea pigs.

We tried to distract Meredith from the guinea pigs by riding the train again and again.

Those poor guinea Pigs. Don’t know if Meredith has been blacklisted from Zoomars, but we may have to wait another year before going back!

February Smorgasbord: Ballet, yoga, hiking, the park and playtime at home

At the end of the week, we typically have “smorgasbord” for dinner… basically that means we scrounge up whatever we have left in the fridge and call it a meal! This week it was Jake and the girls’ specialty, Spanish Tortilla de Patatas (pretty much eggs, potatoes and veggies cooked into a delicious frittata), while some weeks it’s just applesauce, cheese sticks and plain noodles! I liken these blog posts unto our end of the week smorgasbord because of the lack of unifying theme when my pictures have built up! So blog smorgasbord it is.

We’ve spent the better part of four years in this spot, watching the kids grow up in this little playground.

This girl brightens up my day! We will miss our little tot lot so much when we move. We are close to deciding on a house and will only be moving a few minutes away to a bigger house, but the day (and weeks after) we sold ours, I was an emotional wreck. We couldn’t have asked for a better neighborhood and friends I know I can rely on for two cans of diced tomatoes, an onion, and beef broth (actual ingredients I needed and received via doorstep delivery from one of the neighbors I group texted last week)! We will miss our beloved home dearly and are trying to engrain in our memories the place where we brought our babies home for the next month until it’s time to say goodbye.

Cold weather doesn’t ever deter the twins from begging to go to the beach. Who needs sand toys when you have driftwood?

At the beginning of the year, the twins started a new ballet/yoga class at Grace and Zen and are hilarious practicing their mermaid and dolphin poses. It’s a very fun, low-key and zen-like class. The girls even get to rub soothing lavender oil on their feet at the end to wind down! I think I should be the one going to this class.

Cute mini dancers.

So graceful…

Tree climbing and showing off some gymnastics moves after dance.

The girls love to roughhouse and be silly on the floor. Meredith gives as much as she takes and the twins are often left screaming and crying after she pulls their hair and crawls over them like bugs!

I will especially miss the trail out in the canyon behind our house… countless memories of taking Bandit out there to chase bunnies before we had kids, then going on nature walks with the girls and running with Meredith and the jogger.

We had to be out of the house randomly last month for an Open House, showings and inspections, and I often took the girls out for a picnic lunch and playtime at the park after preschool pickup to kill some time.

The twins were SO excited about their 100th Day of School celebration wherein Samantha and Amelia were tasked with bringing 100 chocolate chips and 100 Chex, respectively, to help make their class snack mix.

The twins never had one of these little push tricycles when they were babies because there was no way I could push both of them at the same time. They were pretty much resigned to the double stroller back then, but now they love pushing Meredith in her trike (and ride it themselves, in an apparent attempt to regress and enjoy the toys they never had as babies!) I must say, it’s a completely different experience having a singleton.

One way in which Meredith compares to her sisters is her capacity for trouble. She’s worse than the twins! She loves to camp out by the fridge and tinker with the spice cabinet, waiting for the opportune moment when I open the fridge to grab something out of the door. She was quite happy with her spoils of maple syrup this time.

Samantha and Amelia’s favorite pastimes include dressing up, especially if it’s with mommy’s jewelry and shoes.

Lately, the girls have been requesting fairy tales like Jack and the Beanstalk, Rumplestilstkin, Hansel and Gretel, and the Three Billy Goats Gruff at naptime/bedtime (sometimes edited to be less– er– nightmare inducing!). They love to act out the Troll Game where they take turns being the guards of the baby gate and random places around the house, yelling, “None shall pass!” in threatening/giggling tones.

When the girls are in preschool, Meredith and I usually go for a little stroll after she wakes up from her morning nap and right before we pick the girls up from school. It’s nice to have the one on one time and watch her explore her world.

One aspect of parenting we’ve been trying to get better at lately is giving the girls more one on one time alone with one parent. They are together SO much of the day, and even though they are each other’s best friends and would come to each other’s defense in a heartbeat if anyone so much as dared tease them, the fights, the tattle-telling and the whininess rear their ugly heads if they don’t get their little attention baskets filled as individuals. We aim to spend at least twenty minutes a day of “special time” with them individually, doing something they like to do at home, and try to get out on a more extended “date” once a week. That doesn’t sound so hard, but trust me, some days it is difficult to find the time/occupy the other two with something so I can spend time with one if Jake’s not home. Here’s Samantha on a date with me at the library, concentrating on her coloring and relishing being the only child for the hour. The difference in their personalities is astounding when they are by themselves… zero arguments, whining, or fighting. It’s almost too quiet!

During her special Samantha time with Daddy, she almost always requests to build a castle with magnatiles.

Besides romping with her sisters, going on walks, feeding Bandit treats, and wreaking havoc in the kitchen, Meredith’s favorite pastimes include going up and down the stairs. She loves it when I pretend to chase her, shouting, “I’m gonna getcha!”

Oh yes and eating. By far her favorite! We held her up next to my friend’s three year old the other day and she’s just as big!

Lots of love,
