Christmas Week with Grammy and Grandpa

Grammy and Grandpa came to stay with us during the week after Christmas and it was heaven! The twins were giddy with excitement over all the attention and play, Jake and I got a break, and we finished tons of items on our to-do list, including organizing and putting up wainscoting, crown moulding, baseboards, installing a closet, rewiring electrical for a ceiling fan, painting and setting up the crib in the nursery.

I’m feeling significantly less stressed out now that my top items have been checked off the list before baby; although, who am I kidding? I’m sure I will come up with at least 50 more items that need to be done… Jake is well aware of this and has already informed me he is done with projects for the year!

IMG_3686

Christmas week always seems like a sugar/food/presents/fun extravaganza because it’s a double whammy– our anniversary is the day after Christmas! It’s nice to celebrate over the holidays since we usually have family around to watch the girls and it always feels extra special with the holiday decor and lingering magic of Christmas in the air.

For our 9th anniversary, Jake surprised me by arranging for my parents to watch the girls for an entire 24 hours and whisked me away to the Ritz in Laguna Niguel. He knows me too well and rightly predicted that if I had known in advance we would be gone for a whole day and night, I would have come up with a million reasons to cancel so that I could get projects done at home. Since I didn’t know in advance what we were doing, I didn’t really have a choice… definitely a good thing!

Pregnancy massage, lunch and dinner by the sea and waking up to an ocean view made me feel so pampered and it was so nice to relax with Jake. A big thanks to mom and dad for watching the girls and to Jake for planning such a wonderful getaway. It was rejuvenating and I’m certain that all the pampering/relaxation will help me get through these last six weeks of the pregnancy (and maybe even survive the newborn stage).

Before we left for our mini vacation, Great Aunt Linda and Great Uncle David stopped by on their way back from LA and hung out with the girls and my parents while Jake and I were at the hotel. They came bearing gifts too– Aunt Linda’s famous homemade fudge and treats, as well as the girls’ Christmas presents– some awesome jumping bags for potato sack races and all around fun. We are so excited to have a new way for the girls to jump out all their energy!

Back at the house, Grammy and Grandpa took the girls to the park and played all day. It didn’t seem like S and A thought about mom and dad at all.IMG_3721

We missed the girls… but not too much.

Thanks, babe! I love you and am so happy to have been your wife for the past nine years! Looking forward to Year 10!

After returning refreshed from the Ritz, for the rest of the week, we got to work finishing up all our projects at home while the girls went out with Grammy and Grandpa every day for an adventure. They went to parks, rode bikes around the neighborhood, played at the Discovery Cube, had dinner at Great Auntie Lynn’s, went to the Santa Ana Zoo and read zillions of books, played with arts and crafts and put together puzzles all week long.

There’s never any real punishment for S and A when they make a mess in the kitchen because they think vacuuming is fun and love to do it.

Samantha made it all the way to the end of the street on her bike, but was not pleased about having to ride it all the way back.

Grammy made meal time a lot more exciting (i.e. the girls increased their silliness factor by about 100). IMG_3769

Since we didn’t see our cousins on Christmas Day, we exchanged presents at the zoo and S and A were elated about their new sets of Duplos. Thanks, guys!

The girls and their entourage. I hadn’t been feeling fantastic the past few days prior to the zoo, so I definitely needed the help that day. Baby is definitely prepping for her grand entrance… just don’t come too soon– I need the time!

It was past our usual nap time at this point, and Samantha was getting a little dazed. She spent the entire ride like this:

Amelia must be going through a growth spurt, because she’s been chowing down like I’ve never seen before lately.

Samantha has never been known to say no to bacon and a chocolate chip pancake.

Grammy and Grandpa are gone and we are back to life as usual…sigh. Thankfully, there’s only a few more weeks to go until they come to see us again… and next time around, it will be a lot more chaotic around here when our numbers go from four to five!

Utah Week Three and Going Home

After our refreshing stay in the mountains at Solitude, we packed up, contacted the condo owners about the lamp that Samantha broke (they were really nice about it…I think my inclusion of the phrase “twin toddlers” softened their hearts a bit, because they told me I had my hands full) and met up with Grammy at the Hogle Zoo before heading back to Grammy’s house.

IMG_2683

The Hogle Zoo has definitely been upgraded since I used to go there as a little girl. Not too crowded and the enclosures weren’t the tiny cages I remember seeing back in the day.

IMG_2700

IMG_2702

IMG_2699

Our favorite part– the grizzly bears. It was lunch time right as we arrived at the bear enclosure and the zookeepers threw dozens of steaks out for the bears to munch on. Reminds me of two little bears I know.

IMG_2691

The girls napped on the way back to Grammy’s and they had a renewed interest in exploring Grammy’s house again since we had been in the mountains for half a week.

The next morning, we saw my good high school friends, Crysta and Sarah, and their kids who weren’t in school. Samantha and Amelia loved playing hide and seek and tag with all the kids.

IMG_2718

This random cat from the park apparently wanted to come home with us as it jumped in our car.

IMG_2720

After the park, Grammy watched the girls while we packed the car to go home. During our stay, Grammy had prepared for “meltdown moments” by stashing away some new crafts and small toys to bust out at opportune times. The girls were totally occupied running around and pretending they were dinosaurs with the masks Grammy gave them. Too bad we couldn’t bring Grammy with us back home!

IMG_2721

It felt like a long vacation, and the girls had been having periodic meltdowns for a week or so about wanting to go home, but as soon as we said goodbye to Grammy and Grandpa and drove off, they of course started crying that they wanted to go back to Grammy’s. We can never win.

Miraculously, the girls were great in the car and slept the four hours to Saint George. We made a quick dinner pit stop there before gearing up to head to Vegas. The girls were super cranky and sick of the car by the time we got there, but all in all, it could have been much worse.

We normally would avoid Vegas at all costs, but we knew we’d be so tired from the trip that we’d need to make an overnight pit stop.

Since we had Bandit with us, we had to find a dog friendly hotel for our stay– so annoying (but we love you, Bandit!)

I had to laugh at some of the “Doggie menu” options!  Totally overboard, but nice for people who are willing to fork over some dough to pamper their pets. Apparently, we are not those people! Sorry, Bandit, but I would rather spend the money on a nice meal for myself. You know, because I actually chew my food before swallowing.

IMG_2744

The next morning, our plan was to tire the girls out before the four-hour car ride back home, so we hung out at the Mandalay Bay pool, which connected to our hotel. The girls were in heaven and I was happy about keeping them occupied without venturing out of our little bubble into downtown Vegas.

IMG_2727

IMG_2726

Our mission to get the wiggles out was successful. The girls ran around non stop at the beach-entry wading pool, wave pool and lazy river. Since we were out in the morning, we had the place to ourselves, except for a few other families. I’m assuming most people in Vegas were too hung over to leave their rooms in the morning!

IMG_2729

The girls don’t even play this much in the sand at home, but for whatever reason, occupied themselves for hours in the imported sand here?

IMG_2736

IMG_2728

Samantha soaks up the sun.

IMG_2731

By far the most relaxing part of the entire Utah trip for me!

IMG_2742

Tired out from the sun and sand, the girls slept the whole four hours home to California– truly miraculous! Despite it being 100 degrees when we returned (in the middle of October, ugh!), everyone was happy to be home. Except of course, for the girls, who repeated how much they missed Grammy’s house regularly for the next week.

Thanks for a wonderful stay, Grammy and Grandpa!

Lots of love,

Bridal Veil Falls and Football

Since the first week we were in Utah was pretty hot down in the valley, we went for a short excursion up the much cooler Provo Canyon with Grammy. It was such a lovely fall morning. Having lived in California for almost a decade now, I’d forgotten how much I love a real autumn! IMG_2406

After the falls, we went to a small park down the canyon and the girls entertained themselves by throwing rocks and sticks in the river.

IMG_2415

Moving on to recreational rock climbing. Yes, we went through a hundred boxes of Hello Kitty bandaids this trip.

IMG_2418

IMG_2421

Meanwhile in Oregon… Jake and his brother, Jarom, were also enjoying the beautiful scenery on their boys road trip. I have no idea why anyone would want to drive from Boise to Eugene, taking a million “detours” to the coast and through national parks on the way, particularly after just having driven from California to Utah, but they seemed to have a great time. Boys. Go figure.

IMG_8502

In the evening, we all anxiously gathered around to watch the Utah Oregon game, which turned out to be perhaps the greatest Utes game of all time. To say Samantha, Amelia and I were jealous we weren’t there with Jake and Jarom in their seats on the 10th row midfield would be an understatement. Still can’t believe we missed that game.

Utah Trip Week One

The day after my 20 week ultrasound appointment, our family loaded up in the car (including Bandit!)  and made the annual trek to Utah. Since we hadn’t been to Utah at all this year and we won’t be going back for Christmas, we turned it into an almost three-week stint. Jake drove us out to Utah, flew back to California for the majority of our stay to make sure things weren’t melting down at the firm and to complete some flooring projects I asked to be done before the new baby gets here, and then flew back to Utah the weekend of Sarah’s wedding to drive us back home.

This was the first time since the girls were about 9 months old that we made the journey during the day instead of driving through the night while the girls slept. I’ll give credit where credit is due– Samantha and Amelia far exceeded my expectations. We left during naptime and they slept the entire four hours to Vegas, at which point the two hours to St. George was the worst of our trip. Between the girls and myself, we had to make about 10 stops in that two hours just to use the restroom!

We had planned on stopping over in St. George for the night, but after eating dinner and letting the girls run around for a bit, we decided to grit our teeth and make it the rest of the four hours. After fair amount of screaming protests to get out of the car, the girls conked out and slept most of the way to Grandma’s, where we all collapsed in our beds at about 1 a.m.

When the girls woke, they didn’t waste any time exploring all the “new” stuffed animals, toys and books at Grammy and Grandpa’s. We spent a good portion of every day playing in Grammy’s backyard, which was relaxing for me since I could supervise them from the comfort of the deck. It was great not having to load up to go to the park every day– I just opened the door and let them loose in the backyard.

Playing with the hose and pretending they were “piggies” in the bath was a favorite activity most days.

IMG_2354

Hooray for 29-year-old playsets! I had fun as a kid on this thing and I’m glad the girls can now enjoy it too.

IMG_2364

IMG_2343

Bandit lost about ten pounds on this trip just running around the backyard, barking at all the people biking on the back trail.

IMG_2348

Amelia loved making sand pies.

IMG_2350

Jake hung out with us for one day before flying to Boise to meet up with his brother and take a boys road trip to Oregon for the weekend before flying home to California. We sure missed him!

IMG_2353

IMG_2355

IMG_2358

IMG_2365

It’s not really the country, but it sure felt like it compared to what the girls are used to.

Wide open spaces!

IMG_2370

IMG_2375

My parents had some friends staying with them while we were there who had a Basset Hound-Lab mix named Tesla. He and Corgi-Lab mix, Bandit, made fast friends and were constant border patrol companions around the backyard.

IMG_2723

Samantha enjoyed some trial runs on her flower girl hair-do for the wedding. The girls’ hair used to stay curled into ringlets without much effort, but the past summer, it’s gone more wavy instead, so I did some experimenting.

More backyard fun with Grammy.

IMG_8488

One of the girls’ favorite books right now is We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. All the rocks and trees in the backyard provided them the perfect landscape to hide and pretend to be bears.
