Legoland with the Gerins and Bubblemania at Moonlight Beach

Every October, we try to make it down to San Diego as much as possible, because many theme parks and activities are free for kids in San Diego the entire month! This Legoland trip, our cousins joined us for an action-packed day of rides and pure exhaustion.

Poor Hailey– not much for her to do except watch!

Meredith was tall enough to go on several of the kiddie rides– she was obsessed with this helicopter.

Hi cousin!

Legoland is definitely no where near as crowded as Disneyland, but waiting in line for more than two minutes with Meredith is basically torture.

Safari ride.

Hit the spot!

The line for this jousting ride was one of the longest– no idea why, but it was the girls’ favorite ride of the day.

Samantha is a total thrill-seeker and went on Legoland’s version of Splash Mountain twice with Jake and Zack.

Drying off.

Meredith followed this princess around asking for a pic.

Lunch break.

The struggle is real.

Too bad Meredith was napping; she would have loved the Duplo playground.

One of the highlights of the day was feeding the ducks. Should have just stayed home!

Meredith woke up right as Jake and the twins passed by on the storybook ride. Needless to say, she was NOT happy about being left out.

An exciting cousins adventure!

We stayed nearby at the Omni La Costa and enjoyed some ice cream and s’mores by the fire pit to end our exhausting day.

Before heading home the next day, we spent the morning at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas. It had a nice park right next door and super clean bathrooms, checking off two must-have items on my list.  We were there early enough in the morning that the beach was uncrowded and it was a perfectly warm/clear day to boot.

Anytime sand is involved, the girls’ favorite pastime is to attempt to dig a hole to China, hoping to avoid lava on the way there.

Meredith needed a little time to warm up to the idea of getting wet. She kept wanting to wipe the sand off of her feet and legs with baby wipes!

Almost to China!

NOT happy about being stuck in a hole.

A bonus was this random old guy making giant bubbles with homemade bubble solution for all the kids on the beach to frolic around. He even does bubble birthday parties and gave us his card.

Inside a giant bubble!

Legoland, beach and bubbles made for the perfect short getaway!

Carlsbad Getaway and Legoland

The week before Labor Day, Samantha and Amelia’s school had a break before the fall session, so we took off for a few days for a short end-of-summer getaway.

We rented the cutest beach cottage in Carlsbad, named Seaside Cottage, just a few minutes to the ocean. The owners were so thoughtful, and even left presents of Lego Duplo ice cream trucks for the twins, and a baby ball toy for Meredith.img_2519

BUNK BEDS. The twins were in heaven.

img_0902

When I saw the backyard online, I knew this was the rental for us. It lived up to the alluring pictures as the girls were occupied playing in the backyard nonstop. We just have a patio at home and are used to walking to the park to get everyone’s energy out, so much like staying at Grammy’s in Utah, this was a nice change for us.

Cute teepee.

img_2524

The rental originally belonged to the owner’s grandmother and they had a fun history of the house framed on the inside; it was originally purchased by the owner’s grandmother after WWII for just $10,000 with the GI Bill.  Crazy to think it’s worth over $1 million now!

The twins adored their bunk bed room, while Meredith enjoyed sleeping in the owner’s pack n play in our room.

img_0923

The rental had a high chair, stroller, toys, bikes and all the beach gear we could ask for. We didn’t have to bring any baby gear with us, which was so nice for a change!

Carlsbad isn’t a hotspot for tourists, like Laguna Beach closer to us is, so everything felt very low-key and relaxing.

Meredith played with her toys while watching the girls get buried in the sand.

The present the rental owners left for Meredith has become her favorite toy of all time.

Can’t get enough of that face.

img_2489  img_4965

While the beach and hanging out at the rental were fun, the main event for the twins was their favorite theme park, which they talk about constantly at home, and somehow manage to weave into their bedtime stories. Jake took the twins for an all-day Daddy-Daughter Legoland date, while I relaxed with Meredith.

Back at the rental, the girls helped make grilled pizza.

One of our favorite parts of the trip was biking. The rental had beach cruisers and a trailer in which to tow the twins. We brought our own baby seat for Meredith. Meredith loved her first bike ride!

img_2439 img_2435

I am not the best at balancing (just ask Jake what it’s like to ride with me on a tandem), but riding with Meredith on the cruiser was surprisingly easy.

Our getaway was just long enough to have a break from the day-to-day routine, but quick enough that we weren’t going crazy by the end of it. We’ve found our new go-to beach rental and hope to make it to Seaside Cottage again soon!

Daddy Daughter Legoland Date

I don’t know who was looking forward to a Daddy-Daughter Saturday at Legoland more… Samantha and Amelia, or myself! After an especially tiring week, Jake took the girls to Legoland a few weekends ago from sun-up to sun-down so that I could relax at home with Meredith– dad of the year!

IMG_2268IMG_2258

I received regular updates from the girls throughout the day.

IMG_2207

Amelia was proud of her license.

IMG_2198

IMG_2199

Remind me to stay off the roads when the twins turn 16.

IMG_2191

Their motoring skills are slightly improved from last year. 2015:

IMG_2201

The twins relished their day with Daddy. It’s nice that he’s good at the things I’m not– like having the patience to do construction projects with them. IMG_2247 (1)

IMG_2242

Not surprisingly, the girls reported that their favorite “ride” was the playground.

IMG_2231

IMG_2232

Jake tortured them by going on the Splash Mountain-like ride that they hated last time we went. They apparently screamed for twenty minutes afterwards and people looked like they wanted to call CPS on Jake for bringing them on the ride, so they still may not be ready.

IMG_2228

The lifeguards asked everyone to get out of the pool for a few minutes and the girls decided to put on a show.

IMG_2225

IMG_2219

Unfortunately, my peaceful day at home did not work out to be so peaceful. I’ve come to the conclusion that Meredith thrives on the chaos that occurs when the twins are in the house. She was freaked out about how silent everything was and didn’t sleep more than 20-30 minutes at a time the entire day. WHY?!

Her least fussy moments were when we were out and about at the grocery store. It was definitely a different experience shopping with one kid– best part of my day… and hers.

What a fuss budget!

IMG_4628

I had planned on getting so much done while the twins were on their date, but with Meredith so fussy, it was probably one of my worst days with her to date! So much for my golden opportunity to feel productive. At least the twins were asleep by the time they got home and we all felt refreshed from a day out of the ordinary.

Meredith was so happy to have her sisters home after a whole day with boring mommy. Bring on the noise!

Cousin Maddy Comes to Visit

In August, Jake’s niece, Madelynne, came to visit all the way from Michigan. She was a lifesaver of help while she was here, just like the last time she came!

Flashback to 2013:

IMG_2327

No one ever accused my babies of being skinny!

IMG_4933

Last time Maddy was here, she put together a fun “Baby Olympics” competition, featuring such legit sports as baby diapering, a timed stroller run, and best dressed baby contest– obviously, I won.

IMG_5229

This time around, Samantha and Amelia were a lot more mobile and talkative (read: more exhausting). They clung to Maddy from the get-go and had the best time with their cousin!

IMG_1926

On my end, it was nothing short of amazing having Maddy’s help. While Jake was at work, Maddy helped cook, clean, dress, and feed the girls and attended their normal activities, like My Gym, with me. With the extra set of hands, I almost didn’t know what to do with myself! Maddy also babysat for us several times and took the girls to the pool with Jake almost every day.

IMG_1914

We went on a shopping outing so that Maddy could buy some new school clothes while she was here. The girls made a quick detour to the dinosaur section while Maddy was trying on outfits.

IMG_8359

Samantha one handed!

IMG_8353

Amelia loves “shopping.” IMG_8343

At home, the girls loved having Maddy read to them, do arts and crafts, make zuchinni muffins, and do some gardening. As the guest of honor, the girls let Maddy pick our first ripe mini pineapple we’ve grown in our garden. We only got a 1/4 inch chunk each, but man, was it the best pineapple we’ve ever tasted!

IMG_1921

Poor Maddy had to be squished between the girls whenever we went somewhere.

Near the end of her trip, we all went to hang out at the beach in Oceanside and went to Legoland the next day.

IMG_1947IMG_1935

Normally when we take the girls out to eat or to a hotel, it feels like way more of a hassle than just staying at home. With Maddy there, however, Jake and I were actually able to relax a bit and be on “vacation.”

IMG_1955

Highlight: Jake and I eating breakfast together in the morning, while Maddy stayed with the snoozing girls in the hotel! By far our best hotel experience with the girls so far.

In the morning, it was Legoland time!

IMG_1970

Since we’d never been to the waterpark portion, we decided to hit that first. I pretty much just sat back on a beach chair while Jake and Maddy took the girls in the wave pool, the tubing river, and down the slides.

IMG_1978

IMG_1980

Amelia and Maddy.

IMG_1983

Samantha and Amelia spotted a log ride with a pretty intense-looking drop, and of course, wanted to go– against my wishes. When the girls returned, visibly shaking and with ghostly white faces, I knew I should have stuck to my guns!

Maddy and Jake recounted how the girls, sandwiched between them, were excited about the ride on the way up, but screamed hysterically on the way down and throughout the big SPLASH! It took a minute for both sobbing girls to calm down as the log rounded the corner, but after a bit, Samantha calmed down and announced she wanted to go, “Again! Again!”

Amelia screamed, “Noooooooooo!!!!” in protest. Just as the log ride was approaching the end, the ride made a “click click” sound on the track, similar to the click you hear when the ride is going up the hill. As soon as the girls heard the click of the track, they thought they were going up (and thus DOWN) again.

According to Jake and Maddy, Samantha and Amelia immediately turned to each other, clutched each other for dear life, and screamed their heads off in protest! That priceless imagery makes me wish I was there! My poor little wet koalas!

Samantha attached to Maddy after a traumatizing log ride.

IMG_1976

After that, the girls opted to go on some tamer waterslides.

IMG_1985

IMG_1987

The water park was a blast…mostly because I experienced it sitting under an umbrella in a lounge chair sipping a smoothie!

After a morning at the waterpark, we spent the rest of the day sweating in the regular park.

IMG_1999

IMG_2009

Waiting in line.

IMG_1974

I thought for sure that the girls would scream throughout the pirate ship ride that they begged to go on. Much to my surprise, they had no fear.

The girls are on the very back left, sandwiched between Jake and Maddy. Just watching this ride makes me sick.

The girls’ two favorite rides: the airplane and helicopter.

IMG_1995

Considering I did basically no work the entire trip, our Legoland adventure was highly enjoyable.

We are so grateful Maddy was able to come out and we all had a big reality check the next day when she flew home. Luckily, per the girls’ request, we’ve already booked her for next summer. Something to look forward to!

Come again soon, Cousin Maddy!

Lots of love,
