Cookie Decorating, Gingerbread Houses, Broken Metatarsals and December 2018

At the beginning of December, we asked the girls what their favorite Christmas activities were so that we could make a bucket list. Instead of trying to d it all and being frazzled and exhausted, we only picked our favorites and left plenty of room for downtime and spontaneous outings. We loved Christmastime!

The Follow the Star live nativity and international creche exhibit is always a must-do.

Can’t miss our annual cookie decorating with the Wrights. Maliyah and Allie have always been the most meticulous cookie decorators, whereas the twins and Meredith just slap on the frosting and pour as many sprinkles as the can on each cookie.

It’s fall! The leaves finally started falling off the trees in December and Meredith was so excited to jump in a pile!

The twins’ piano teacher, Miss Jenny, brought them some toy Santa boots that they tried to squeeze on poor Eleanor’s feet.

Reagan’s mom from kindergarten dressed up as a totally legit Cindy Lou Who, complete with a wig and prosthetic nose, and read the kids The Grinch Who Stole Christmas.

Christmas fun at kindergarten.

Santa and Mrs. Clause came to visit the twins’ school and read them stories while the kids drank hot cocoa. Sounds cozy!

Christmas crafts:

Letters so Santa (they had to clarify when Santa came that they meant a toy puppy, not a real one!)

School pictures 2018.

Chilling in the backyard.

Cookie decorating with our neighbors.

Naomi concentrated very hard on her cookie decorating while the twins and Meredith went wild.

The girls love to climb a tree at the end of our cul de sac, and one afternoon, while wearing some boots with a slight heel, Samantha jumped out of the tree and landed “not like a cat,” in Amelia’s words. We thought for sure it was just a sprain, but nope, she broke her #2 metatarsal and had to have a boot on for 3 weeks over Christmas! That’s two broken bones for Samantha, if anyone’s counting.

Samantha did not let the boot stop her from climbing trees again.

We told the twins that anytime you saw someone standing under the mistletoe, you had to tackle them.

Christmas party playdate with Meredith’s playgroup.

Instead of attempting to do gingerbread houses with the girls by myself this year (getting the houses engineered to stand up correctly whilst managing three crazies armed with tubes of frosting is not my forte), we waited for a day Jake could be home to help the, and the whole experience was much less stressful! I just stood back, bit my tongue as Meredith ate more candy than she put on her house, and took pictures.

Eleanor rarely tries to roll over– I think her fat to muscle ration isn’t conducive to rolling!

We bought a small live tree this year for the girls to decorate with their homemade ornaments and other random ones they like.

Mom’s tree that no one was allowed to touch.

Meredith begs us daily to let Eleanor move to her room!

Christmas Train and Hanukkah Party

Our Christmas season kicked off with our annual visit to Irvine Park Railroad to ride the Christmas train with cousins Noah and Hailey.

Waiting not so patiently to board the train.

All aboard.

Meredith asked the twins if they could pretend to be reindeer pulling her sleigh.

The girls had already written a letter to Santa, and after much deliberation and browsing the Lakeshore Learning catalog, they decided they wanted “puppy purses” (stuffed animal dogs inside a plush purse– 19.99 for 3 at Lakeshore, so DONE). Meredith also asked for candy, and Samantha and Amelia asked for new play doh and new shoes.. nevermind that they already have plenty of pairs each. They are both in love with the glittery Sketchers Twinkle Toes kind that are colorful and light up, but I don’t buy them because the light ups aren’t allowed at school and I like to buy neutral shoes that can go with any outfit. Nevertheless, they are total girls and love getting new clothes and shoes, so they decided to put that on their Santa list this year in the hopes that Santa would bypass mom’s preferences for shoe buying.

Christmas Train in years past:

Storytime with Mrs. Clause.

Meredith ran up to meet Mrs. Clause, but then had second thoughts.

We let the kids use their tickets to choose a few activities. Their favorite is always “ice fishing” and “winning” the cheap stuffed animal prizes.

Getting so tall.

Amelia and Samantha raced each other in the jeeps while Meredith went crazy in the bounce house.

Our other adventure with the cousins was hanging out at Auntie Lynn’s Hanukkah Party! It was a good thing Auntie Lynn made approximately 12,000 latkes, because the girls gobbled half of them up. Latkes with applesauce, yum! They were equally excited about the delicious blintzes, cute Hanukkah cookies and playing dreidel/winning gilt (we didn’t tell Meredith that they were chocolate, and it surprisingly took a while for her to figure that out).

Zack gave my biceps a rest from holding Eleanor.

Maui 2018: Polo Beach, More Swimming & Wailea

The rest of our week in Wailea, Jake was at his law conference in the morning and working some of the afternoon, so the girls and I alternated between the beach and pool every day while he was gone. Thankfully, after figuring out where everything was, it was totally doable getting everyone down to the beach or pool, even easier than it is at home! We called the valet to drive us in the golf cart down two minutes to Polo Beach where they set up chairs and umbrellas for us and set us up with plenty of ice cold water and towels. I wish I had this service back home!

We didn’t bring any sand toys this time, but the girls were plenty occupied running from the waves, digging holes and jumping off rocks. The hardest part was moving Eleanor constantly to keep her super fair skin from getting fried. I was constantly reapplying sunscreen on all the girls, and sunscreen and sand were everywhere, getting all of our snacks and towels sandy and sticky!

Ready, set, go.

Who needs sand toys when you can make shapes in the sand with your hands and sticks?

The girls got very creative thinking of games to play in the sand.

Eleanor was eyeing the snacks.

The giant mermaid baby.

The girls had a blast jumping on and off rocks into the water once the tide got a little higher.

Samantha and Amelia were incredibly muddy by the time we were ready to leave. They were covered in sand from head to toe after all that body surfing.

So sandy!

By 11:30, it was too hot to stay and the girls were hangry for lunch. The beach attendants called the golf cart people for us, and while we were waiting, I showered off 1,000 tons of sand off of Samantha, Amelia and Meredith, while Eleanor was strapped to me in the Ergo and got soaked! Everyone was screaming bloody murder and I was yelling/ordering everyone around to stick legs/arms/neck/back in the water. It felt like a hundred years of my life getting them clean enough to go back to the hotel!

As soon as the golf cart pulled up, Amelia tripped over a rock and fell flat on her face. Along with Meredith and Samantha, who were crying from being wet? hungry? who knows?, Amelia was now bloodied up all down her legs and was screaming on the ground. The golf cart driver was so nice and carried Amelia to the golf cart, along with all of our gear. I was so relieved to finally get them all back and contained in the hotel room– everyone was so exhausted, hot, tired, and hungry and it was definitely one of the more stressful moments of our vacation!

In the afternoons, Samantha and Amelia checked out the kids club, and every day going forward, they asked to join the kids club! I don’t know if I should be offended by the fact that they wanted to go to the kids club rather than hang out with us, but whatever. It was run by a sweet old lady who organized crafts, stories, games and took the kids on adventures every day. Every day was themed– volcano day, gecko day, sandcastle day, coral reef day, etc. Meredith wasn’t old enough to go, so she hung out with Jake, Eleanor and me while the twins were enjoying their adventures.

From our lanai, we spotted the kids hunting for geckos one afternoon. On volcano day, they built volcanos and looked at some volcanic rock on the beach, and on sandcastle day they had a sandcastle making contest. On coral reef day they learned about coral and sea creatures and went snorkeling in the shallow water. The girls were so sad that we weren’t staying long enough to check out the rest of the theme days!

Meredith hopes that next time she’ll be old enough to join her sisters!

Meredith picked so many hibiscus flowers on our trip I thought we’d for sure be billed for them or something.

Practicing her yoga moves.

On our way to pick up the twins from the kids club.

One of the afternoons, after picking the twins up from the kids club, we took the hotel’s Escalade service to the Shops at Wailea to stock up on chocolate macadamia nuts and let the girls pick out a souvenir using their chore money. The twins picked out stuffed turtles, while Meredith kept browsing and picking up the most random items, but eventually settled on a small purse shaped like a fish, which she still affectionately calls her “fishy purse.” We grabbed a bite at Cheeseburger in Paradise, which was basically just burgers and chicken fingers and not my favorite, but the girls loved it. The staff ooohed and ahhhed over Eleanor’s chubby cheeks and she was her usual magnetic self.

On our way to eat, we saw Hawaiian Santa and his elves decked out in Hawaiian shirts and shorts! We decided this could be our Santa photo for this season.

Aloha, Santa!

Another morning in paradise.

I did another day at the pool/rented cabana in the morning while Jake was gone and by then, the girls had the drill down pat. Swim gear on, water slide, splash pad, pool, snack breaks in the cabana, potty break, and then repeat until lunch.

I was so afraid of Eleanor having a blowout in the pool, but she was a good girl and waited until we were back in our room!

The twins made a new friend and splashed for hours, pretending they were lost at sea on their turtle boat, with shovels as paddles.

Eleanor was getting hot and wanted back in the pool!

After a day at the pool, picking tropical flowers, going to kids club, and more swimming, the girls ate pizza in our room and watched a movie with the sweetest babysitter we hired from Maui Nannies. We put Eleanor down to bed first so that the sitter only had to handle the twins and Meredith, but she was such a pro, she would have been fine with all four. She brought her own crafts, stickers, and books for them to do and they were so engaged, they didn’t even say goodbye when we left to walk along the boardwalk past the Four Seasons and over to the Grand Wailea for dinner at Humuhumunukunukuapua’a (Humuhumu for short, apparently). We had a beautiful view and enjoyed our dinner out/walking in the cool Maui breeze. When we returned, our sitter reported that all the girls were great and while Meredith had gotten out of her bed a few times, she eventually conked out. We ended up getting a sitter two more times on our vacation so that we could have a relaxing adult meal!

Goodnight, Wailea.

Santa’s Village

After returning from Hawaii, and before we left for Utah, the girls had another chance to talk to Santa, in the hopes that their requests for a vet kit with kitty and doggy (Amelia), castle (Samantha) and fruity candy canes (both girls received some from teachers at school and from then on eschewed the peppermint versions in favor of strawberry) would be realized.

We went out to dinner with the Nguyens before seeing Santa, and the twins and Parker were in the silliest moods, bouncing all over the booth seats and having a grand time. It’s always a crazy time putting five kids five and under together in close proximity in a waiting/eating situation, but fortunately, we had great company. Parker has always been so patient with the girls, from the time they were 18 months old and barely talking, and it was fun to see them all chatting now that they are a little older and have the most random conversations.

Whatcha ordering, Maple? Mmmmmm…. shrimp pesto pizza sounds delish!

The aftermath from the babies:

This was our third annual time going to our local Santa’s Village with the Nguyens and Meredith and Maple’s first time there. Meredith kept wanting to pet Maple who looked like a cuddly bear in her adorable faux fur coat.

2014: The girls were not even two yet and still used their Wubs.

Last year, we ran into Michael and Parker, while Phi stayed at home with newborn baby Maple. The girls and Parker had an in-depth chat last year about how all the baby business was going since they were soon-to-be big sisters themselves.

Once again enjoying their hot chocolate, one year later:

Meredith was fascinated by Frosty and other interesting life-size stuffed animals. I would pay money to get inside those baby heads and see what they are thinking sometimes!

One of my favorite pics ever!

The twins miraculously didn’t notice the cookie decorating station this year… phew. Between parties, treats from school, baking at home, and Christmas festivities, we were on sugar overload this Christmas.

2014: Santa and Mrs. Clause smartly placated the terrified twins with candy canes for the picture.

No one cried and the twins were rewarded with candy canes from Santa. Meredith gave Santa a wary look at first, but stayed calm being held by Mrs. Clause.

Not every Christmas activity we’ve been to in the past is one we’ve turned into a tradition, but being local, free and simple, Santa’s Village is one that’s here to stay… at least while the girls still believe in Santa!
