Ladera Campout 2018

At the end of July, Jake took the twins and Meredith to our town’s family campout while Eleanor and I had a girls’ night at home! Jake was very brave to camp overnight in a tent with these three hooligans by himself, but his backup plan was that they were just five minutes from home if things became too crazy. Fortunately, they did not have to launch Plan B and had an awesome time “glamping.”

Everyone arrived at the campout in the afternoon to set up tents and check out the kids’ activities. This was definitely the world’s most entertaining campout with painting, a tidepool, bounce houses, games, crafts, and outdoor movie, catered In N Out for dinner and catered Corner Bakery for breakfast!  Being a board member, Jake even had valet parking… I don’t even understand how they can legitimately call this camping. They literally didn’t have to do anything but show up with their tent and sleeping bags!

Meredith works on her masterpiece.

So proud!

The girls loved touching all the tidepool creatures “with just TWO fingers,” according to Meredith.

Pretty sure she wasn’t supposed to take that out of the water.

Getting some energy out in the bounce house and obstacle course.

Silliness before dinner.

S’mores time.

Ready for the movie.

I texted everyone goodnight at 9:30 p.m. and Jake informed me that no one was asleep yet, mostly due to Meredith constantly wrestling and rolling over everyone. The twins were in hysterics, screaming, “Meredith STOP! Go to sleep!” When she finally conked out mid-roll, the twins and Jake were finally able to get some sleep, despite the noise from all the other kids in close proximity crying and whining for their little siblings to go to sleep already! Jake definitely has nerves of steel, that much is sure.

Good morning at the crack of dawn!

Meredith woke up on the wrong side of the tent.

Jake needed a nap and everyone was cranky the next day, except for Eleanor who slept like a dream baby!

Easiest campout ever!

The twins and Meredith debriefed their experience, and apparently Meredith was not in the best mood:

Four Five And Under Week 1

Our first week home with newborn Elle was a whirlwind of feeding, late nights, early mornings, and driving the other girls around to all their activities! Thank goodness Grammy and Aunt Sarah were there to help out. The twins were still in preschool three days a week through the end of June, so there was drop-off, pick-up, lunch packing and Helper of the Day to take care of, plus swimming lessons for all three. We divided and conquered, with me handling mostly just the baby, and Grammy and Aunt Sarah taking charge of the twins, Meredith and pretty much everything else.

Our first night home with Eleanor was rough! She was awake all hours of the night and Jake and I had a few moments of “What have we done??!!!” as the sleep deprivation began to take its toll. Exhaustion and feeling like a cow are all I remember about the first few weeks! Eleanor liked to sleep a lot during the day, which we hoped would reverse into more night sleeping soon as she got used to her new environment. To add to the mayhem, due to her elevated jaundice levels, Jake and I took turns carting her to the pediatrician for her check-up and then to the hospital lab for blood work every day that week. It was exhausting and one more thing to worry about! Fortunately, her levels went down on their own by Saturday and we didn’t need to take home a special lamp for phototherapy or admit her to the hospital.

Before Eleanor was born, we worried about how Meredith would take a new little sister in our crew, but she did the best out of everyone! She was eager to help grab diapers, toys, cuddle and help feed a bottle to Eleanor. The twins were also enamored of their baby sister and showed their preschool classes pictures and made cards for her. The girls were especially excited when Eleanor brought them some “nice to meet you” presents and toys, and were also happy when anyone came to visit since that usually meant they received some “big sister” gifts as well.

Meredith’s antics always make for good photo opportunities.

More photos from Week 1 (my cell phone pics because I was too out of it to take any good ones!)

Those newborn alien eyes!

Where am I??!!

The girls loved checking the mail every day for cute baby gifts from friends and family.

Aunt Sarah and the baby queen.

Dreamy smile.

Meredith always has way too much fun with Snapchat filters.

Since Eleanor was born on the day their preschool had their Daddy Daughter day, Jake took them out for pancakes another day to make up for not being there. The girls agreed it was an acceptable trade.

Samantha and Amelia are great climbers– their favorite is practicing in a tree at the end of our cul-de-sac.

The twins were always picking bouquets for me on their walks.

Saturday morning paddle boarding adventure in Newport while I stayed home with the baby.

Our twins club had a playdate/party at the park, complete with a little petting zoo, and a traveling reptile zoo.

May Photo Recap

May was beautiful with lots of outdoor time! It wasn’t too hot, which was perfect for my hugely pregnant self!

Samantha boogies at the park.

Apparently, everyone was in a good mood at the park today!

Snacking and lounging at the Lake Forest Sports Park.

Our caterpillars finally emerged into butterflies and after a few days of trying to keep Meredith from poking them, it was time to let them fly free (likely to get eaten by the plethora of hungry birds in our backyard seconds later).

Our neighbor had the cutest flower planting/gardening birthday party and one of the games was eating donuts off a string. Very entertaining for the parents!

Meredith totally cheated!

One perk of Jake being on the Board of Directors is being invited to special events, like this private party at the water park for Board Members and volunteers in our community. It was a little chilly, but the kids didn’t care and due to the live steel drum/reggae band and catered dinner, if I closed my eyes, I imagined I was in the Bahamas for just a second…

Meredith made a new friend!

The girls’ favorite part was the ice cream sundae bar.

Arts and crafts time.

I was lounging by the pool when Jake was with the kids at the craft table. He later told me there were some old lady volunteers nearby whom he overheard remark, “Did you see that lady in the blue and gray? She looked like she should have given birth YESTERDAY!” And then I walked up to Jake about two seconds later and they realized I was with him haha! Gossipy old ladies!

Knocking over the Jenga tower was a huge source of contention, so we left when the girls started fighting!

The end-of-the-year fundraiser at the girls’ preschool was the Helicopter Golf Ball Drop, which like last year, was a huge hit with the kids. Meredith couldn’t believe she got to see a helicopter so up close, and one dropping hundreds of golf balls to boot!

Another highlight was finding this eerily friendly bunny on the green.

I wish the kids would pick up their toys at home as fast as they picked up these golf balls after the big drop.

The girls were so excited to meet up at the splash pad with Noah and Hailey who were visiting town. Cousin time!

Hailey was not too happy about Meredith constantly being in her face!

Noah and the girls making mud pies.

We started our yearly swim lessons with Miss Conni and Miss Erica and the twins worked on their freestyle stroke, began learning the butterfly and breaststroke and of course, had fun on the diving board. Meredith does her own separate swim lesson with Miss Conni that Jake takes her too and Miss Conni says Meredith is a natural! She looks forward to her Daddy time twice a week and is the only kid in the class who can jump off the diving board and float to her back. I need to remind Jake to take some pictures and video of her, because every time I go to the twins’ lesson, Miss Conni raves about Meredith.

A monthly recap would not be complete without documenting squabbles and fights. There’s a lot more where this came from.

Meredith begs to sleep in the twins’ room every day at nap! This month, Meredith also had her first impromptu day of preschool. I had to be at school setting up decorations for Teacher Appreciation Week and asked Miss Debbie if Meredith could join the toddler class while I was setting up. Meredith didn’t bat an eye or say goodbye to me– she joined the other kids right away and had the time of her life! We were there all morning and Miss Ericka said she was the star of the class!

Our new pool cleaners.

Don’t know that much pool cleaning is going on.

S’mores time in our backyard fireplace.

Who you looking at?

Weekly park playdate with friends.

A rough day for Amelia!

Experimenting with curlers.

Highlight of the month: playing with this enormous box for a few days until I got sick of it being in our garage and threw it out, to the girls’ great disappointment.

I can’t believe the girls had never actually done a pinata before, but they got their chance at Allie’s birthday party. Meredith was especially fascinated with the concept of whacking something with a bat and collecting the candy that spilled out.

At the end of their ballet/yoga class, the girls do a relaxation time and then a craft– their favorite part!

Movie night.

I spend a good majority of my afternoon ignoring tattle tales over who knocked over their block towers.

Playing with neighbors at the pocket park.

We spent pretty much every weekend in May working on projects. Meredith helps Daddy with the closet floor!

Lazy hammock afternoon.

Samantha and her acrobatics.

This is how Meredith wakes up:

Meredith’s crazy toddler tantrum side:

Sweetly singing!

Our ward went on a Memorial Day morning hike to the top of a peak in San Juan Capistrano overlooking the ocean. At 9 months pregnant, I stayed home, with Jake braving the hike by himself. I was concerned it was 3 miles roundtrip and really steep, but the girls did great, even though they were the last ones up the trail!

At the top, they signed the visitor book and sang some patriotic songs before heading back down. Apparently, our Bishop helped push Meredith in the stroller while Jake carried both exhausted twins on his shoulders!

A sweet post-hike reward.

Lazy Summer Days in Utah

After Jake flew home for the next week, the girls and I explored all the splash pads in Utah County (why weren’t those there when I was a kid?), visited with friends and family and mostly just hung out in the backyard. By Day Two, “Where is Daddy????” was the constant refrain/wail from the girls and compounded by the intense August heat, by Day Five, they were in complete meltdown mode. Still, we enjoyed our lack of a strict schedule and waking up every morning with no plans, but to see where the day took us. It was a “slow summer” (or as close as we usually get) at its finest.

Intuitively feeling a meltdown moment coming on, Grammy saved the day by pulling out a craft kit that lasted through those lazy, hot afternoons all week!

Good morning (hopefully)!

A little spider in her web.

Every day when Grammy got home from work, she’d find us lounging around in the backyard, with the kids begging me to push them on the swings, and me in an adirondack chair, pretending I couldn’t hear them. She took over kid duty for me, while I made dinner in peace (a welcome trade-off).

It was scorching hot by 10 a.m., so we tried to hit the trail early in the morning with a bike or scooter ride.

We visited the Highland, Springville, Orem, and Bluffdale splash pads, with Bluffdale and Springville being our faves.

Not only did Wardle Fields in Bluffdale have an enormous splash pad, waterfall, and a creek running through it, the girls were thrilled with the massive zipline and huge playground.

All the heat and humidity culminated in rain and thunderstorms one morning, so after a few hours of bounce house jumping at Kangaroo Zoo, we stopped at the iconic Taco Amigo on the way home… this one’s for you, Kati!

Uncle Mike provided comic relief during meltdown moments and accompanied the girls on a bike ride in the 90 degree evening heat!

Our other Uncle Mike was also there to be silly with the girls and trade off swing duty.

Meredith loved the revolving door of family coming in and out!

It didn’t get dark early enough for the girls to actually roast marshmallows at night, but they did roast them in the heat of the evening, and didn’t seem to mind.

Lounging with Aunt Sarah.

We met up with two of my high school friends at the splash pad in Springville and had quite the crew between us all. Meredith played with everyone, while the twins ran off and made some other completely random friend.

We also hung out with my friend, Katie, from teaching school, who moved to Utah last year. Her twins, Lizzy and Iris, were good sports playing duck duck goose with my twins (my girls’ rules of the game are iffy).

During our vacation, I was trying to transition Meredith to a one-nap day once and for all, and, as a consequence, she was a nightmare from 9 am-1 pm every day! When we visited Thanksgiving Point and rode the ponies, kind strangers offered to hold a screaming/kicking/banshee wailing Meredith while I helped the girls onto their horses and took pictures. Meredith alternated between shrieking in delight when we walked around to see the rest of the chickens, goats, horses, cows, llamas and other animals, and shrieking in anger whenever I pulled her back from climbing into the animal pens!

Jake arrived back in Utah a week later to three little girls clambering for his attention non-stop. I pretty much clocked out for the next week, being exhausted from the week before! Meredith and I took a long nap the day he came back, while he took the twins to the Gateway Discovery Children’s Museum in SLC with Grandma Celeste.

Checking out the train station.

It was an exhausting week for everyone!
